Some words clinkAs ice in drinkSome move with graceA dance, a lace.

Some sound thin,Wail, scream and pin. Some words are squat,A mug, a pot.

And some are plump,Fat, round and dump. Some words are light,Drift, lift and bright.

A few are smallA, is and all.And some are thick,Glue, past and brick.

Some words are sad,I never hadAnd other gay:Joy, spin and play

Some words are sick:Stab, scratch and nick. Some words are hot:Fire, flame and shot.

Some words are sharp:Sword, point and carp. And some alert:Glint glance and flirt.

Some words are lazy:Saunter and hazy. And some words preen:Pride, pomp and queen.

Some words are quickA jerk, a flickSome words are slow:Lag, stop and grow,

While others pokeAs ox with yoke. Some words can fly, There’s wind, there’s high.

And some words cry:Goodbye...Goodbye.

Feelings About Words

Poetry is made up of stanzas.A stanza in a poem is what a paragraph is in a piece of prose .

Stanzas are separated from one another by the use of spaces within a poem

The Quarrelby: Eleanor Farjeon

I quarreled with my brother,I don’t know what about,One thing led to anotherAnd somehow we fell out.The start of it was slight,The end of it was strong,He said he was right,I knew he was wrong!

We hated one another. The afternoon turned black. Then suddenly my brotherThumped me on the backAnd said, “Oh, come along! We can’t go on all night I was in the wrong.”So he was in the right.

A Friend I Can Count Onby Joanna Fuchs

When troubles come a callin’As those gremlins often do,And my spirit keeps on fallin’Till I feel low down and blue…

When I look around for comfort,Someone quickly jumps to mind,One who always shows support,And whose words are always kind.

Who will make my mood feel lighter,Who’ll help beat my troubles back,He/She makes the sun shine brighterAnd gets my spirit back on track.

Who helps the road seem straighter,And helps me get around each bend,Who makes each day seem greater,And that someone is you, my friend.

How many stanzas does this poem have?

I Wandered Lonely as a Cloudby: William Wordsworth

I wandered lonely as a cloudThat floats on high o'er vales and hills,When all at once I saw a crowd,A host, of golden daffodils;Beside the lake, beneath the trees,Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shineAnd twinkle on the milky way,They stretched in neverending lineAlong the margin of a bay:Ten thousand saw I at a glance,Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but theyOutdid the sparkling waves in glee:A poet could not but be gay,In such a jocund company:I gazedand gazedbut little thoughtWhat wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lieIn vacant or in pensive mood,They flash upon that inward eyeWhich is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills,And dances with the daffodils.

Rhyme:When the same final sound occurs in different words.

Rhyme scheme:

The planned use of rhyme by the poet.

Usually recorded by designating lines with the same ending sounds with the same letter of the alphabet, beginning at the first line with 'a'

Some poems do not have rhyme.

We call these blank verse or free verse

example:

Fog by Carl Sandburg

The fog comes

on little cat feet.

It sits looking

over harbor and city

on silent haunches

and then moves on.

Write a short poem about one of these pictures and

try to use rhyme.

You can write about what you see in the picture, what the picture reminds you of, or what the picture makes you wish for.
