RESEARCH AGENDA

My current research agenda focuses on change management theories and how they relate to news organizations. DISSERTATION

My dissertation focused on the development of an innovative content management system in a century-old newspaper organization-turned-multimedia news company. The key theoretical construct applied was that of the mutual shaping of technology. The construct attempts to merge the social shaping of technology approach with the diffusion of innovations paradigm, which allows for the holistic analysis of dynamic processes of iterative development.

In this case, the innovation was relatively minor. It was a proprietary CMS for a news organization in a city of about 90,000 people. I used the hierarchy of influences model (Shoemaker & Reese; Shoemaker & Vos) to organize my discussion, and, based on in-depth interviews and qualitative data analysis, I found that individuals in the news organization were more concerned with reacting to changes in technology than with shaping them.
