ABOUTTHE FIRST SETTLEMENTS

England attempted to settle colonies inAmerica as early as the 1500s. John Whiteled a group of colonists to settle near theChesapeake Bay.The small group of about120 people was forced to land on RoanokeIsland instead. The island was harsh, andWhite returned to England for supplies. Ittook him three years to return to RoanokeIsland. When he landed, White discoveredthat all the colonists had disappeared. Thissettlement became known as the LostColony.

Jamestown and Plymouth were the first twopermanent English settlements in NorthAmerica. They were the start of Virginia andMassachusetts, the first two of the originalthirteen colonies.

In 1607 settlers arrived in Jamestown, inChesapeake Bay.Many were wealthy andonly planned to stay lonq enough to findgold. In 1620 Pilgrims arrived in Plymouth, near Cape Cod, seeking freedom to worship.

The Virginians came with a royal charter, meaning they had the permission of theBritish king to colonize. The Pilgrims had noofficial charter. Jamestown colonists namedtheir settlement for England's King James I.Plymouth colonists named theirs for a portin England. They did not want to honor anyBritish monarch!

The first Jamestown settlers were all male.Pilgrims were male and female. Neither of

these groups knew how to farm or hunt. They both learned from the nearby NativeAmericans.

Both Jamestown and Plymouth sufferedgreatly in their first few years in NorthAmerica. Winters were brutal and manysettlers died.

In 1612Jamestown colonists began growingtobacco. They sold a lot of it and prospered. In 1619 the first Africans arrived in Virginia asindentured servants. Soon Virginian tobaccogrowers stopped using indentured servantsand began using African slaves.

Plymouth also grew. In 1630 many morePuritans came to the Massachusetts Bay.Boston was founded that year. Massachusettssettlers began settlements nearby inConnecticut, Rhode Island, and NewHampshire.

These early settlers made some mistakes. However, they were all very brave to movethousands of miles and try to make a life inthe New World.

THE LOST COLONYIn July 1587 a group of 117men, women, andchildren set sail from England to the New World.Their ship was blown off course, and they landedon Roanoke Island. They faced very difficultliving conditions. Supplies were used up quickly.Their leader, John White, sailed back to Englandfor more supplies. When he returned in 1590,all the settlers had disappeared. The only clues

to their whereabouts were the word CROATOANcarved on a post and CRO on a tree. White wentto Croatoan Island nearby, but no one was there.White sailed back to England feeling defeated. To this day, no one knows for sure whathappened to the Lost Colony at Roanoke Island. What do you think happened to the Englishsettlers?
