Disruptive Technology

Managing disruptive technologies and its impact on your team members takes “soft-skills” – the ability to communicate and interact more effectively with others. It’s not what you know that’s important – the question is - can you teach someone else?

Leading The 21st Century Way

Worth Remembering …

“We are being judged by a new yardstick. Not just how smart we are, or by our training and expertise, but also by how well we handle ourselves and each other.” - Daniel Goleman

Confession Number One:

There is no such thing as common sense

Worth Remembering …

“The only thing common about common sense is that it`s not very common amongst most people”

9 05/05/2014 Copyright (c) 2014. Brian Smith - PLD

Page 10: PMINJ Chapter May 5th Symposium 2014 · Your “Attitude” and how you react to any situation is 100% in your control. Act in a way that is going to get you what you want. How much

Lessons Learned

People aren`t born knowing what they need to know. Don`t rely on common sense as part of your training program.

Not everyone learns the same way. Take the time to discover how they learn best and then teach them in a style that they like.

Your most important role as a manager or leader is to teach others what you know and what they need to know.

Confession Number Two:

You can`t motivate people

Worth Remembering …

“If you don`t understand what makes people tick they

won`t tick.” - Robert Swan

Lessons Learned

There is no such thing as constructive criticism – there are only opportunities to grow. Create a `Teachable' moment.

Spend time with your team so you have a clear understanding of what motivates them. Everyone can be motivated – however, others may have a different motivator.

Smith`s Motivation Equation: Need + Goal Directed Behaviour = WIIFM (What`s in it for me)

Confession Number Three:

You Ruin Good People by Promoting Them

Worth Remembering …

“What a man thinks of himself, that is which determines, or rather dictates his fate.” - Henry David Thoreau

Page 14: PMINJ Chapter May 5th Symposium 2014 · Your “Attitude” and how you react to any situation is 100% in your control. Act in a way that is going to get you what you want. How much

Lessons Learned

Just because someone is good at what they do – doesn`t mean they`ll be just as good doing something else.

Seniority and rate of pay aren`t good enough reasons to promote someone.

Not everyone wants to be promoted. Feed Achievers and maintain Sustainers.

Confession Number Four:

You don’t have to know everything

Worth Remembering …

“Companies, like people, cannot be skilled at everything. Therefore, core capabilities both advantage and disadvantage a company.”

– Dorothy Leonard

Page 16: PMINJ Chapter May 5th Symposium 2014 · Your “Attitude” and how you react to any situation is 100% in your control. Act in a way that is going to get you what you want. How much

Lessons Learned

Surround yourself with people who do some things better than you do – and let them do it.

Managers and Leaders aren’t expected to know everything – but they are expected to know where to go to find out.

Ask questions – solicit feedback. Asking for help or advice is a strength – not a weakness.

Confession Number Five:

You`re not the most important person in the conversation

Worth Remembering …

“Reflective back talk increases a leader`s ability to make good decisions.” - Warren Bennis

Lessons Learned

Your thoughts and action must be as one – or the other person will believe the non-verbal as being more accurate.

Communication isn’t just something – it’s everything. If you can’t communicate you can’t manage or lead others.

Develop good listening habits. Patience – Focus – Open Mindedness. You’ll learn more by listening instead of talking.

Confession Number Six:

Park your ego at the door – it`s not about proving you’re right and they’re wrong.

Worth Remembering … “Drop the idea that you are Atlas carrying the world on your

shoulders. The world would go on even without you. Don`t take yourself too seriously.”

- Norman Vincent Peale

Lessons Learned

The more that you allow others to be involved in the process – the more likely they will be interested in the results.

There are a number of ways to accomplish the same thing. It doesn’t have to be just your way. Don’t get too hung up on the process – get hung up on the results.

You need your people a great deal more than they need you. Build collaborative teams.

Confession Number Seven:

You can’t control everything all of the time.

Worth Remembering …

“Surround yourself with the best people you can find, delegate authority, and don’t interfere.”

- Ronald Reagan

Lessons Learned

Delegate, delegate, delegate …. You’ve got to give up control to get control. Resist the urge to micro-manage.

Establish feedback controls so no one oversteps their L.O.A. (Level of authority)

Implement an A, B, C System to help you prioritize what needs to be done first. Ask yourself – Who should be doing this task besides me?

Confession Number Eight:

You can’t demand respect; Respect is reciprocal.

Worth Remembering …

“Ordinary people may not understand the meaning of democracy but they have a passionate regard for fair play.” – Robert Maxwell

Lessons Learned

Develop empathy. Try to see things from another persons point of view.

People will perform for people they like – take the time to establish Rapport – build Relationships – based on mutual Respect.

Remember – no one will trust anyone they don’t respect first. Once you lose the respect of your team – you’ve lost the ability to manage and lead them effectively.

Confession Number Nine:

People hear what they see; not what you say

Worth Remembering …

“Leaders walk their talk, in true Leaders there is no gap between the theories they espouse and their practice.” – Warren Bennis

Lessons Learned

Actions really do speak louder than words – You are what others think you are.

You might not always make the right decision – but you can always make a decision that you can live with. You can always be true to yourself.

What we say to ourselves must be congruent with our actions. We must always walk the talk.

Confession Number Ten:

There aren’t any negatives; everything is positive.

Worth Remembering …

“I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.” – Charles Swindell

Lessons Learned

Your “Attitude” and how you react to any situation is 100% in your control. Act in a way that is going to get you what you want.

How much fun are you to be around? Successful managers and leaders know that they don’t have to be serious all the time.

No one is perfect – including you. Give yourself and everyone else a break.
