by Al JonesChapter Contact News September is gone??? Wha’ happened? The time is just flying by. My 24th scale Airfix Typhoon model is coming along slowly. I had to fudge the fit of the lower cowl some. And, then, thanks to Chuck Davis, I just found out that there’s a missing instruction for the installation of a piece of tubing on top of the engine. I have ordered a replacement canopy from Airfix. Having been encouraged by two other builders to check this piece for damage, I unwrapped the clear sprue and found a 3/32nd inch crack at the top front sprue attachment. And, sure enough, there’s a molding flaw right in the top of the canopy where your eye will look into the cockpit. Delivery of the replace-ment part is expected in a couple of weeks. Once again, the September kit auction was a lot of fun with spirited bidding being the order of the eve-ning. Chapter Treasurer, Jim Zeske, reported at the business meeting, that proceeds from the auction were sur-prisingly acceptable, considering the large number of kits that sold for $5 each. All members should be aware that it is the proceeds from these kit auctions that make it possible to maintain our club’s $1 annual dues. Thanks to all the bid-ders. The meeting theme for the October general meeting (Friday, October 10) is Bare Metal. I wonder if someone will have a DeLorean on display. I plan to bring several of my SnJ and Alclad finished projects. It should be a lot of fun. There was some discussion of members joining the IPMS National Organization. I was not aware that the club will subsidize annual National Membership for Bong Chapter members. If you are one of the Bong Chapter members, and are interested in joining the National (membership in the National is required for entry in the National Convention Contest to be held in Columbus in 2015) you should find the

application form elsewhere in this issue of the WINGMAN. Then you can present your application to Treasurer Jim Zeske at the general meeting to receive your subsidy. Exchange newsletters continue to arrive via email and pony express. This month, I received missives from the Auto Modelers Group, from IPMS/Grand Touring & Racing, from the Winnebago Auto Modelers, from the IPMS/Lakes Region Scale Modelers, from IPMS/Butch O’Hare Chapter, and from The Milwaukee Military Miniature Modelers. The newsletter of IPMS/McKInstry can be found at http://ipms-mckinstry.org/ From Fred Horky, I received newsletters

from Memphis, Auckland, Oregon HMS, Orange County, Marietta, El Paso, Rickenbacker, Western Reserve, Livonia, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Chattanooga, Oklahoma HMS, Albu-querque, Ballerica, MA, San Antonio, Phoenix, IPMS/JAX, and Delaware Valley. Let me know if you would like to receive via email any or all of these monthly newsletters. Our 3rd Saturday Build Session at GNH (thanks for hospitality) was attended by Plzak, Smith, Hoffman, and yours truly. I hope I haven’t

forgotten anyone. All members are welcome to participate. We usually arrive in the classroom at the back of the store around noon. Jay turns on the music for us. There have been no restrictions on the numbers or types of stories told during the sessions. While I no longer receive a Squadron flier, I chanced upon their website and discovered that they are holding their Fall Sale with over 4,000 items marked down from 10% to 94%. For example, the new ICM 48th scale Do 215 B-5 kit, a version of which I reviewed for FSM, is marked down from $59.99 to $41.99. See you all on the 10th.

by John PlzakSecrertary’s Notes Seven members attended the September business meet-ing. Our auction last meeting was another big success. Thank you to everyone who helped with the auction especial-ly auctioneer Paul Boyer and of course thank you to all those that bid and won. Thanks to the support of the auctions, dues for 2015 will again be only $1.00. Planned for our October meeting will be a theme display “Metal Night”. Bring models featuring a natural metal finish and put them on the table. Remember that natural doesn’t necessarily mean shiny. We might also have some video for later on and maybe a raffle prize or giveaway as well. Keeping with the theme displays what would be more appropriate for the January meeting than “White Night” bring any model with a predominantly white color scheme. Think of winter camouflaged airplanes or armor, or perhaps some airliners, maybe even a big white pickup truck. Think outside the box and see what you can come up with. Let’s

just hope that nothing gets lost in the snow. Remember that the club is still underwriting the cost of any member’s dues for IPMS USA, to the tune of $10.00. Just see Jim Zeske and he will write you a check payable to IPMS for $10.00. You can then send that check along with the balance to pay your dues. This is for both new members and renewals. While there is no requirement for members to belong to the national organization, they are strongly encouraged to join.

There were 43 model Information cards filled out. Please make sure you fill out the Model Information cards. Please fill them out clearly. I enter what I can read and my eyes aren’t what they used to be. Also please leave them on the display table. The format of this list is: Modelers name, Item being displayed, Kit Manufacturer and Scale.

Editors Note: In an effort to show more club models I have added more pages of finished models. If you do not see your model it is because I could not see the name card associated with the model in the photo.

Plastic model building began for me in the late 1950s; It stopped near the end of my high school years. Meeting Al Jones and John Plzak at the EAA venue one spring in the late 1990s ended with an invita-tion to a Bong Chapter meeting. The Bong Chapter experience provided the in-spiration for me to pick the hobby back up. After seeing

the results of skilled Bong members’ models, I challenged myself to acquire, learn new skills and techniques that I did not have in the 1950s; these new set of skills could only be learned through the clubs social model-build network, camaraderie, information-sharing, and friend-ships that I observed during the Bong Chapter monthly meeting. My model-builds include primarily WWII armor, mili-tary vehicles and diorama story-telling.

John Werwie

As a teenager I loved building 10 cent Comet balsa wood and tissue paper flying aircraft kits. I also tried a couple of carved balsa solid models which were very primitive. I gave up modeling during the service (Navy) as well as during college and medical school. However during res-idency I was enchanted with Aurora’s plastic 1/48 scale WW 1 aircraft kits and built

most of them in the 50’s. In the 60’s and beyond I built all sorts of models but mostly WWI, WWII and between the wars aircraft. I have built ships, cars, some jets and even painted a few figures as well as continuing to build balsa and tissue flying models. It has been a wonderful hobby especially because of the associated friendships.

Artwork stolen from Takom, placed on the internet, and borrowed by me.

Tom and Dave Shootout February 13, 2015

And now for something completely different, two buttocks* will bring you an armor contest featuring a WWI tank. Yes, we couldn’t resist featuring the new FT-17 kits.

Meng and Takom have released new tool kits of the FT-17, Meng in the conventional scale of 1/35th and Takom has supersized it into 1/16th scale. Both kits are state of the art and include full interiors. RPM has released the kit in both, 1/35th and 1/72nd scales in various versions. The RPM kits were never state of the art but you are welcome to build them if you choose. Why you would choose I don’t know but you can. There are even paper models out there. Hint, hint, hint.

As always build your kit as you like. Add what you want, paint it like you want, convert it, or make a single vehicle diorama. Several 1/35th scale accessories and crew figures have been released for the Meng kit, including photo etch tracks(you gotta be kidding me). The Takom kit has been getting some love from the aftermarket boys to albeit at a slower pace. There are many aftermarket parts available for the 1/35th scale RPM kits (there is not enough Prozac in the world to get me to build that kit now that the new kits are out there, heck I would rather fold paper than build that thing).

Go to PMMS for kit reviews of both the Takom and Meng kits. Squadron has an Walkaround on the FT-17.

*With apologies to the fine folks at Monty Python’s Flying Circus and the youngsters who didn’t spend their teenage years watching them.
