Mary Lee Cuthrell

Morehead City Country Club (MCCC) has been

my husband’s and my home golf club since

1982. I have served two terms on the Board of

Directors, and have served as Vice President

one term. I am retired from the federal

government with thirty years of service. There

I was a Quality Assurance Specialists for

twenty-three years and was an Industrial

Specialist/Business Manager for my remaining

years.

I am an avid golfer who loves MCCC and loves

playing golf on a well maintained golf course.

Our club managers are performing an

exceptional job continuing to make

improvements to the golf course and to our

club services, resulting in membership growth

and increased participation in club events. All

of this has resulted in our club being in the best

fiscal shape ever. If elected, I would do my

best to ensure that our managers continue to

get all the support needs to make our club grow

even more.

I believe in accountability and integrity when it

comes to serving on the board, representing the

membership. I would also be proud to

represent the ladies of this club and the MCCC

Ladies Golf association, providing the board

with their views and desires.

Gary StakesMy wife, Julie, and I moved here in 2000 from Dallas, TX where

we lived for 22 plus years. My wife (maiden name Hyman) grew up

here along with her six siblings. We were married for 32 years

before she passed away in September 2004 one year after we built

our home in Brandywine Bay. May parents moved here in 1963

when my dad bought Sound Chevrolet on Arendell Street. Both

my parents were active golfers and members of MCCC for years .

They were also very close friends with Purcell Jones and spent

many years helping with his annual Seafood Festival from the very

beginning.

After serving three years in the U.S. Army, 25th Infantry Division,

and spending one year in Vietnam in 1965-66, I put myself through

college on the GI Bill. I graduated from East Carolina University

with a major in Business Finance in 1969 and then began my real

estate career as a commercial mortgage banger with Cameron

Brown Co. I spent several years the arranging financing for major

commercial real estate projects such as office buildings, shopping

centers, apartment projects, and hotels. Later on I changed from

the financing side of the table to the development and acquisition

side and went on to join major hotel corporations such as Holiday

Inns, Inc., Brock Hotel Company (the largest Holiday Inn

franchisee in the US), and ITT Sheraton Hotel Corporation.

During my 30 –plus year development career I was responsible for

acquiring, designing, developing, building, joint venturing,

renovating, and financing major hotel projects throughout the US

for these hotel companies. During this time I was intimately

involved in starting and developing several hotel chains to include

Embassy Suites (now owned by Holiday Inns), Residence Inn’s

(now owned by Marriott), and Sheraton Suites Hotels (now owned

by Starwood Lodging Trust?. In 1992 I left Sheraton and formed

Garrison Sajak, LLC, a hotel development, management and

consultant company, where I developed 42 AmeriSuite Hotels

(now owned by Hyatt), oversaw the re-development and expansion

of the Barton Creek Golf Resort and Spa in Austin, TX and

developed the Omni hotels in Richmond, VA and Jacksonville, FL.

To date, I have developed, acquired, aor renovated 167 free

standing hotels ranging in size from a small 100 room Residence

Inn to the 1200 room $920 million Sheraton Hotel in New

Orleans, LA.

I joined MCCC in September 2011 because I liked the quality golf

course, its practice facilities, the clubhouse and, of course the large

and varied membership base. Since I’ve been a member I have

noticed numerous changes and improvements to the course, the

clubhouse, the pool and the membership base. I have also seen a

general improvement in the financial operations of all which leads

me to believe we are on the right track. My area of focus include

improving the tee boxes by increasing the size and allowing the tee

boxes to weather the level of play better. Some of these

improvements are being done as of the writing. I would also like

to see the sand traps improved with better and more consistent

sand. Beautification of the course is also an area of interest. Since

the tennis coursts are not being used I would also like to see them

removed and replaced by greatly expanding the chipping green and

the surrounding pitching areas to improve the practice facility for

short approach shots. A barrier of large evergreens, etc. could also

be added between this expanded practice green and the first tee to

serve as a sound, visual, and beautification buffer.

I would like to become more involved in the management of the

club, not only to learn more about how this club operates, but to

possibly help in various area of operation. I have seved on various

corporate and homeowner association boards before as President

and Treasurer and would welcome the opportunity to relate with

the other board members to serve the members of MCCC and to

continue to make this club the premier and most desirable club in

Carteret County.

Terry Senich

I have served as an elected Director of the club

for multiple terms in the past. I was President

of the Board in 2014. I have been a member

of MCCC since January 1995.

After spending my youth in Ohio and

graduating from Ohio University with an

engineering degree, I was a General Motors

employee and lived 30+ years in Yardley,

Pennsylvania.

My wife Lynn and I are presently moving into

a home off Country Club Road, close to

MCCC.

During recent years I have volunteered with

my church, I have been selected to be part of

both the Morehead City and Carteret County

Boards of Adjustment, and have served as

president of a local Light Saltwater Tackle

Fishing club. I also studied gardening and

attained the status of Master Gardener.

By far my favorite activity and my passion,

however, is golf. It is my affiliation with

Morehead City Country Club that has meant

the most to me during my retirement. I am so

proud of our club….the staff, the members,

and the leadership. We are so fortunate. There

is a commitment we all share to maintain our

standards, to welcome new members, and to

continue to make the course and the clubhouse

the finest in our area.

There is always a delicate balance as we strive

to contain costs while providing exceptional

value to our membership. I have enjoyed being

part of the club

Bob Blewett

I have been married to my wife

Carol for 52 years and we have 3

children and 7 grandchildren. I

worked for the New Yourk City

Transit Authority for 40 years.

Involved with setting up budgets,

supervising ordering equipment for

Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, and

Queens and managing personnel.

Fire captain for 32 years with the

Ronkonkoma Fire Department and

for the last 15 years as South River

Merrimon Fire Department. I was

president of the Jonaquins Landing

Homeowners Association for 4

years. I believe in keeping our golf

course in top notch shape, keeping

the club financially stable and to

continue with course

improvements. Your suggestions

and ideas will be always welcome. I

enjoy the social activities at the club

and playing with the Hotdoggers.

Thank you for youy vote.

Robbie Bittner

Robbie Bittner is originally from

Beaufort, NC. He attended West

Carteret High School and was a

competitive swimmer throughout

his childhood. Robbie attended the

University of North Carolina at

Chapel Hill and swam on the

varsity team for his four

undergraduate years. After

graduating from the business

school, he attended the Masters of

Accounting program at UNC,

graduating in 2008. Robbie earned

his MBA through East Carolina

University earlier this year.

After graduating from UNC,

Robbie was hired by McGladrey to

work as an accountant. He

obtained his CPA license and has

been with McGladrey for seven

years. Robbie has been a member

of the After Hours Rotary Club

since 2009 and has served as the

treasurer on their board.

Robbie and his wife, Ila, bought a

house in Country Club Run and

were married in 2011. They joined

Morehead City Country Club

shortly after they got married and

have been avid supporters of the

club, including both golf and social

activities. Robbie continues to

improve his golf game and enjoys

walking a couple of holes for a little

exercise when the weather is

nice. Robbie and Ila are frequent

visitors to Thursday night pizza

nights. They also love going to the

band parties and have enjoyed

seeing the attendance at every event

grow.

Operations Report ~ Nick Eatmon

Key financial numbers at the end of fiscal year 2015 (October 2014

through September 2015):

• Membership has increased to 630 family memberships.

• Income from October 2014 through 2015 has increased by over

$150,000 from prior year.

• Food & beverage sales increased by nearly $60,000 while dues

increased by nearly $80,000!

• Debt has been lowered to $322,000.

• 2016 budget shows a net income of nearly $500,000 before taxes

and depreciation.

Over the past 3 years finances have improved dramatically through

not only increases in income, but decreases in expenses. Those

gains have led the club to be in position to reach for our ultimate

goal. A goal of becoming the #1 VALUE GOLF CLUB IN THE

CAROLINAS WHILE IMPROVING OVERALL

FACILITIES WITHOUT DUES INCREASES OR

ASSESMENTS.

An active membership the size of MCCC makes decision making

difficult. There is a balance in where to make enhancements and the

order those improvements need to be made. Where money is spent

and in the time frame it is spent is not going to be universally

approved by the entire membership. Many will applaud

enhancements, while many will have questions. However, every

member can agree they would like to see the club continue to

improve, in essence increasing the value of their membership. The

goal of the staff and the Board of Directors has been to better the

overall facility. By making advancements through the golf course,

clubhouse, pool and events the club is seeing unprecedented

success.

The staff and the Board of Directors want to hear your voice to help

make informed decisions. Please fill out the survey in this

newsletter. ALWAYS give us your opinion and please attend Board

of Directors meetings. These meetings are held on the third

Tuesday of each month at 6:00. These are exciting times for the

club, be informed!

In 2015 the club has been able to spend nearly $200,000 on

improvements while also lowering debt by $200,000. Improvements

on the course included the purchase of greens mowers, construction

of tee boxes, bunker sand, cart path repairs and driving range

improvements including mats and stands. Facility enhancements

included ballroom and foyer flooring, paint and drapes. Addition of

a tent and chairs has lead to the largest parties in club history. Pool

improvements include new fence and deck furniture. To finish off

fiscal year 2015 a complimentary member appreciation tournament

with $1,500 in prizes, lunch, drinks all day, heavy appetizers in the

evening with entertainment by The North Tower Band and magician

Bryan Sanders was held.

What to expect in the next 6 months: Completion of tee boxes

will be in early October. MCCC teeing complexes will be

transformed to 5 sets of tees. Current senior tees and ladies tees will

be expanded to accommodate additional traffic. Tee placements will

be modified for holes to play consistent from all tees. Tees will be

rated by the Carolinas Golf Association for all to play from any set

of tees they wish. Combination tees will also be rated. With five

sets of tees the goal is for all players to be able to play from a set of

tees where they feel comfortable. Driving distances and skill level

should be taken into account to determine which set of tees you

should play.

TEE IT FORWARD By USGA April 4, 2013

Introduced in 2011, TEE IT FORWARD is a joint initiative between the

USGA and The PGA of America that encourages players to play from a set

of tees best suited to their driving distance. In addition to providing more

enjoyment for golfers, teeing it forward also can be one of the most

important steps that golfers take in improving pace of play.

A 2012 survey of TEE IT FORWARD participants found that:

56 percent played faster

56 percent are likely to play golf more often

83 percent hit more-lofted clubs into greens

85 percent had more fun

93 percent will TEE IT FORWARD again

More from the USGA:

One question that arises is, “Will my Handicap Index® still be portable

from a forward tee?” When posting a score from a more forward set of tees,

for example, that set of tees will have Ratings that are in accordance with a

shorter total yardage (e.g., a 6,500-yard set of tees may have a men’s USGA

Course Rating of 71.0/Slope Rating of 120, whereas a 5,500-yard set of tees

for men may be rated 66.0/110; a 5,500-yard set of tees may have a

women’s rating of 71.4/114, whereas a 4,500-yard set of tees for women

may be rated 65.8/101). The player’s total score is usually going to be lower

by playing a shorter set of tees, but the ratings are going to be lower,

respectively, to compensate for the difference. Thus, the Handicap Index

and Handicap Differential™ produced from each round played should be

about the same and keep a Handicap Index portable from tee to tee, course

to course.

An example of recommended play according to driving distance &

handicap: 250 Yards & Over – Black, 215-249 – Blue, 180-214 - White

145-179 – Gold, Under 145 Yards – Red

These would only be recommendations. Any player male or female, over 65

years of age or under can play any tees they desire or any combination of

tees.

For tournament purposes men under 65 will have the blue tees as their

standard tee. Ages 65 to 79 standard tees will be the white tees. Over 79

years of age will use the gold tees. Women under 65 standard tee will be the

gold tees. Over 65 standard tee will be the red tees .

Note the black tees are new with all other teeing areas moving up one tee

box. Some tee yardage may be slightly different once completed.

Operations Report Continued

Bunker improvements:

The #1 complaint concerning golf course conditions

have been the consistency in bunkers. This has not been

taken lightly. The USGA recommends to include funding

in the capital improvement budget to rebuild the bunkers

every 5 to 7 years. Typically, this involves removing the

old sand, installing new drains, and installing new sand.

For complete renovation bunker reconstruction cost will

be well over $200,000 for MCCC. The good news is the

bunkers drain exceptionally well, for their age. Morehead

City Country Clubs bunkers were built in 1998. The

front right bunker on #2 has had sand replaced and has

held up very well. Bunker sand has been added

periodically since 1998, but completely replacement of

the sand has not been done with the exception of the 2nd

hole. The sand replacement on the 2nd hole was

recommended for the club because of the steep bunker

edges. The particle size is heavier and stays on the edges

better after heavy rains, while also minimizing fried egg

lies. Materials for bunker sand replacement is under

$10,000. The maintenance staff will complete this work

in the offseason , because of the amount of labor needed.

First Tee of Eastern North Carolina:

Time after time as a staff we hear, I wish I would of

started the game when I was younger. Or I wish my kids

would have picked up golf. In addition the long term

health of MCCC is dependent on the youth and their

families. Take this opportunity to introduce the game to

elementary students across Carteret County. Students

will learn the game and The First Tees nine core values,

honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence,

responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgement.

We’re asking members to donate $25. By doing this you

will receive $25 off your next pro shop purchase of $150

or more. This offer expires April of 2016. The club is

excited to announce The First Tee Classic being held

March 19th. If you would like to help sponsor the

tournament or to be a yearly sponsor of the First Tee

please take note of information on page 10. When

donating $25 make payments to MCCC. Your donation

will help provide school funding where Morehead City

Country Club will receive signage at each school with The

First Tee curriculum. Your donation will be recognized

through MCCC newsletters.

Over 10,000:

In daily operations the clubs largest growth has been

through food & beverage. The social calendar will

continue to grow as participation has increased.

Upcoming events include The Backyard Groove Band

which will coincide with the 49th Purcell Jones Seafood

Tournament. The Band of Oz is coming back

November 13th and Casino Night is here again on

Saturday, January 23rd. The upcoming schedule can be

seen on the events page. What does over 10,000 mean?

Over 10,000 more alcoholic beverages were

purchased this fiscal year over last! Thank you to

everyone for drinking more this year than last! More

importantly thank you for helping to make MCCC the

most successful country club throughout the state. The

support you have given the staff and the participation you

have given each and every day is second to none. As a

staff we promise there is more to come!

Swing for a Cause’ raises $10,000

Making donation

The Morehead City Country Club Ladies Association donates $10,000 to SECU

Crystal Coast Hospice House and the Raab Cancer Clinic at Carteret General

Hospital (now known as Carteret Health Care). Left to right, are Bennette Hopper

(Hospice House), Patti Summerlin, Joyce Creech, Joyce Olsen and Susan Collins.

MOREHEAD CITY — The Ladies Golf Association from the Morehead City

Country Club held its annual “Swing for a Cause” Golf Tournament on June 23

with 80 entrants from 18 golf clubs.

Women travel a surprising distance to help with this tournament. They report that

they come because they believe in the causes for which the money is being raised.

They also enjoy playing golf at the Morehead City Country Club.

The annual event raised $10,000 with all the money recently donated to the Raab

Cancer Clinic at Carteret General Hospital (now known as Carteret Health Care)

and to the SECU Crystal Coast Hospice House. This money is raised through

generous support from county businesses, restaurants, golf and country clubs, many

private donors and with outstanding support from Morehead City Country Club

and its members.

The program at lunch during the tournament was presented by Sarah Strange,

Bennette Hopper and Charlie Miller who is the new executive director of the

Crystal Coast Hospice House. Strange recognized cancer survivors who participated

in the tournament.

Mission: The First Tee of Eastern North Carolina will impact, influence and inspire the lives of young people by providing learning facilities and educational programs that

build character and citizenship, instill life-enhancing values, and promote healthy choices through the game of golf and other enduring character-building activities.

Morehead City Country Club Members-

We are excited to inform you of a wonderful non-profit called The First Tee starting in our area and being held at Morehead City Country Club.

It comes as no surprise that we welcome this program with enthusiasm, as there are overwhelming benefits for the youth in our county.

The First Tee is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit youth development organization with the purpose of providing young people, of all backgrounds, life-

enhancing values such as honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, and confidence. Many of the participants are receiving college scholarships and

career opportunities because of their involvement in The First Tee. Our goal is to implement The First Tee National School Program into

elementary schools in Carteret County. The First Tee National School Program introduces elementary students to The First Tee Nine Core Values,

and the Nine Healthy Habits, which, are delivered through the game of golf during physical education classes. Physical educators receive special

training, curriculum focused on core values, and equipment for effective learning environments.

Once the The First Tee National School Program is integrated into our school system, we will begin our after school programs in spring 2016

at Morehead City Country Club where The First Tee Nine Core Values and Nine Healthy Habits will be reinforced through the game of golf and

various activities. This is a nonprofit where community involvement is a must and we believe it will be successful with the abundance of

community support we feel here at Morehead City Country Club. We want to see it flourish in our Carteret County area as we know it will

strengthen and enrich our community. Please contact Camille Gardner at [email protected] to learn how to get involved or with any

questions you may have.

Thanks for all you do to help our community!
