ClariTube is based on a modularconcept and usually consists ofcylindrical filter elements, arrangedin single or parallel rows. During thefiltration process, all activatedelements are in use simultaneously.When the cleaning process is activated,one or more elements are deactivatedand cleaned, while the remainingelements in use, so that no interruptionin the filtration process is necessary.

Lenzing TechnikLenzing Technik will present the

newly developed backwash filterLenzing OptiFil®-M for the first time.While conventional backwash filtersare designed for surface filtration incoarser areas down to 50 µm, theLenzing OptiFil®-M is the firstbackwash filter especially optimizedfor cake-forming filtration tasks.

ACA Systems OyThe uniform filtration performance is

an essential quality requirement of thefilter media so that it can protectpeople, machines and environment.The filtration performance of themedia is often measured as airpermeability/pressure drop. So far,it has been possible to measurethese important characteristicsreliably only in laboratoryenvironment. However, laboratorymeasurement is typically used onlyfor quality control due to delay of theresults and so it has not been usedas a process control tool.

Now ACA Systems Oy fromFinland has developed andintroduced new online measurementdevice ACA Permi for measuring airpermeability/pressure droprealtime in process.

This novel technology measuresbased on continuous air flow methoddirectly from the moving web with

very high correlation to various labstandards. On-line air permeability/pressure drop analyser helps to see evensmall process changes and learn howthey affect the filtration performance.

GKDWith the development of Porometric,

GKD has created a woven filter mediumthat is not only highly accurate but thatalso out performs known media in termsof permeability and dirt holdingcapacity. In order to make Porometric’sadvantages available for as manyliquid-solid separation processes aspossible, GKD then adopted the newweaving pattern for as many pore sizesas possible. This has led to a new rangeof wire filtration meshes ranging in pore

Porometric filtration mesh- the new wire meshmade by GKD

size from 13 µm to 1000 µm. Backed byresults from independent testing labs andcustomers that confirm high flow rates atlow pressure, mechanical stability andexcellent cleaning behaviour, Porometrichas broken into the field of appliedindustrial filtration. GKD is proud topresent these new members of thePorometric family at Filtech 2019. Theyare available not only in a range of pore

sizes but also in avariety of materials.Customer requirements led GKD todevelop a hybrid version of Porometric,fusing stainless steel and high-techpolymer materials. Applications withseawater have resulted in thedevelopment of a highly corrosion-resistant Porometric variant which can bewoven with openings as small as 25 µm.

GKDs new Trimetric filter media ismade from sinter material, combiningoptimised dutch weaves and metal fibrenonwovens for hot gas filtration withtemperature resistance of up to 600C.

The Trimetric media will be making itsdebut at Filtech in October and the com-pany says its efficiency has been de-monstrated in a study by the GermanInstitute of Mechanical Process Engi-neering (IMVT). Adaptable for specificapplications, the inherently stable filterelements can be used in all designs ofstandard dust filters and in bag filter sys-tems with minimal adjustments to fittings.

As a sintered filter medium laminate,Trimetric is based on tested processes atGKD for producing the mesh laminateGekuplate and the results of the IMVTstudy. The study showed that thecombination of metal fibre nonwoven onthe outflow side and optimized dutchweave on the inflow side is highly effectivein terms of cleaning and filtrationefficiency. The high dirt holding capacity of

this combination guarantees a slowincrease in pressure loss with a high levelof separation efficiency.

Pfaff The core competence of Pfaff

Industriesysteme und Maschinen GmbHis the joining of flexible materials. Thecompany not only masters industrialsewing applications, but has also beenan innovation leader in textile weldingapplications for decades. Depending onthe material and customer requirements,

customer solutions are implementedusing the Ultrasonic, Hot-Air

or Hot Wedgewelding

methods.In additionto theclassicalindustries

such as 'clothing,shoes, home and car

upholstery', the company has madea name for itself as a specialist supplierof production solutions for the filterindustry. Whether it be filters for dryfiltration (dust removal, air conditioningand ventilation technology) or for liquidfiltration, such as pleating filters, tubefilters, stocking filters, pocket filters, bagfilters, etc., the articles must first beassembled. In close dialogue with thecustomer, Pfaff defines the right joiningtechnology and implements this in themachine or production line.

With the brands Pfaff Industrial andKSL, the company has the necessaryexperience in process engineering, electricalengineering, automation technology androbotics to meet customer requirements forreliable, partly fully automatic solutions. Afully automatic production line for themanufacture of filter bags (with longitudinalseams) for an Asian customer is currentlybeing manufactured in Kaiserslautern,Germany. At the heart of the system are theexchangeable hot-wedge welding and 3-thread chain-stitch sewing units.Depending on the application, these canbe implemented in the manufacturingprocess in just a few minutes.

The raw material is unrolled, preciselyformed and quickly and reliably fed to thesewing or welding unit. After joining, the'tubes' are cut (filter length selectable viadisplay) and automatically ejected.Optionally, the parts can be labelledusing a printer. Depending on thematerial, the plant reaches a productionspeed of 10 m/min.

At the Filtech, Pfaff Industrial presentsa new ultrasonic welding machine, a trueworld debut. In addition to regulatingspeed and welding power, the new Pfaff8311 allows power to be measured andheld constant during the welding processfor the first time. Machine adjustment andhandling is easier. The process becomesclearer, more reproducible and easier tounderstand. In short - the machine israised to a new level. Another highlightof the machine is the trimming function. A

cutting blade to theright of the weldseam can beswitched on and off.These and othersolutions will bepresented at thisyear's Filtech in Hall11.1, No. E1.

of adhesives and sealants as well asproducts for surface treatment. Sonderhoff,which has been part of Henkel AG since2017, is a system provider for materials,machines and contract manufacturing.This means that users can benefit fromeffective customized solutions for the entirefilter production system from a single source.The result is an improvement in solutions thatraise efficiency in filter manufacturing aswell as uprating the functions and quality ofthe filters themselves.

Manufacturers of liquid filtrationsystems in water, food and beveragesindustries face the challenge of having tocontinually raise the reliability andefficiency of their products. But they also

need to cut the maintenance costs whencleaning filtration systems. Henkel hasdeveloped a two-component epoxyadhesive, Loctite EA 9452, in meetingthese high requirements. This adhesive ischaracterized by very good acid andalkali resistance when filtering liquidsubstrates at pH2 to pH12. Above all,the product has a high temperaturestability of up to 85oC. 'This allows theintervals between the cleaning cycles tobe extended, reducing costs and raisingproduction output,' says Frank Lenz,Business Development Manager Filtrationfor Europe at Henkel, explaining theefficiency benefits.

Henkel also offers Technomelt AS5115, which isa solvent-/BHT-free hotmelt adhesive based on ethyl vinylacetate. The product is approved to VDI6022 for use in ventilation and airconditioning systems and is also used forthe bonding of clean room filters.Technomelt AS 5115 can be used up to100oC, impressing with its excellentfungal and bacterial resistance thatmeets ISO 846. This reduces the effortrequired for cleaning and disinfecting the

filter elements andapparatus.

Sealing specialistSonderhoff, amanufacturer of two-component foam gaskets,adhesives and pottingcompounds as well asmixing and dosingsystems, will bepresenting theadvantages of theirfoamed filter adhesive inthe Fermadur range. Thisadhesive bonds thefolded filter pack to theinterior of the filter frameand is applied using aSMART-M dosing cell.Thanks to the foamed cellstructure and theresulting lower density,this product achieveshigh efficiencies in filterproduction. The amount ofadhesive per filter can bereduced by up to 50%thanks to the foamed cellstructure. This saves bothmoney and weight, whilecontinuing to meet therequirements for high-quality filter bonding,says the company.

AFC type filter media testsystems of Topas GmbHevolved to an indispens-able instrument for seve-ral industrial applica-tions. The multifunctionaland compact basicdesign, which synergisesaerosol generation(monodisperse/polydis-perse solid/dropletaerosols), aerosol condi-tioning (concentration,charge condition,classification) and

aerosol analyses (incl. automatedsampling, data weighted by number/mass), enables the modification forcustomer-specific performance require-ments. Especially for filter media and smallfilter elements, AFC type test systems serveglobally for standardised characterisation,optimisation, development and qualityassurance. It can be used for cleanable filtermedia (ISO 11057, VDI 3926) as well asfilter media used for production of generalair ventilation filters, engine air intakefilters, and cabin air filters.

Furthermore a special QC setup isoffered for production tes ting of vacuumcleaner HEPA filters (EN 1822-4 App. E).AFC type test systems are also operated inindustry and research for the developmentand calibration of aerosol-analyticalinstruments (e.g. environmental sensorsPM10, PM2.5). The standard channelconfiguration is based on a circular flowchannel that offers face velocities in arange of 0.02 to 7 m/s. All AFC type testsystems are equiped with a user-friendlycontrol and test evaluation software.

eurolasereurolaser is one of the world's

leading manufacturers of CO2 lasercutting systems for nonmetals. Large-scale laser systems are ideally suited forthe cutting of filter material. Thecontactless process ensures constantcutting quality without tool wear. Thetable concept with vacuum exhaustreduces dust and keeps the material inplace at the same time. In addition thethermal laser process ensures the cutedges are sealed during thecutting of synthetic textiles.

Subsequent processing ismade much easier because thecut edges of the filters do not fray.

The handling of material from

the roll is especially comfortable witheurolaser’s own conveyor systemcombined with a feeding unit. At theFiltech, eurolaser presents its L-3200with a table size of 1800 x 3200 mm.The machine offers additional tool slots sothat laser and knife-tools can be used onthe same machine for even moreversatility in the processing of filtermaterial.

With the latest version of thesoftware suite LaserScout, the cuttingof printed filter mats becomes eveneasier. The softwaremodule JOBIDENT isused for the fullyautomatic identificationof different job files via aQR code on the material.This module is the key forentry into Industry 4.0.The nesting softwareadditionally reduces thewaste to a minimum.

MATH2MARKETWhen developing new filter media,

µCT scans are a powerful tool to gaindeep insights and ideas for innovationand quality control. However, the prere-quisite for this is that the relevant informationconveyed by the images is correctlyextracted, interpreted and quantified.

'Our simulation software GeoDict®

provides a deep quantitativeunderstanding of the informationcontained in CT images and helps

to overcome the challengesof modern filter mediadevelopment,' says Andreas

Wiegmann, the CEO ofMath2Market, 'We are proudto present FiberFind-AI, a newmodule available for the firsttime in the GeoDict®-2019

software, at Filtech'.

The FiberFind AI module applies aneural network previously trained withGeoDict on µCT-scans to first identify allfibers in the filter medium individually.Fiber properties such as fiber diameterand length distribution, fiber orientation andfiber curvature are then quantified in detail.

In the training phase, the neuralnetwork is trained on microstructures ofnonwoven that were modelled with the

fiber generator module of GeoDict®. Therefibers (and also binder) are alreadylabelled on the artificial 3D-scans, sincethis information about fiber and binders isknown during the generation process. Inthe usage phase after the training, theneural network also performs reliably on3D-scans of real nonwoven scanned withµCT (or FIB-SEM).

The use of the neural network enableshigh-precision simulations and analysisof fibers and binder distribution innonwoven that occur during production.Gaining such insights throughexperimental research and developmentwithout 3D imaging and subsequentanalysis is a lengthy and painstaking -or even unfeasible task.

task and in many cases, the developmentcycles required to improve prototypescan become time-consuming and costly.When optimizing a filter element forinstance, aspects like the geometry of thehousing and material properties of thefilter media such as their filtrationefficiency, flow resistivity and mechanicalstrength have to be taken into account.

In order to use digitalization for theacceleration of the development, problem-adapted simulation tools are required.Based on more than 20 years of experienceand active research in the field, FraunhoferITWM offers simulation tools ranging fromthe production of filter materials to the finalfilter element.

Due to themelt-blown process the achieved fiberdiameter can be as low as 1 - 2 µm oreven finer, reaching filter classes up to F9or potentially higher.

Having similar properties to aramidfibers, but significantly finer diameter,smartMELAMINE is well suitable for hot-gas filtration and has shown a significantincrease in the fractional collection effi-ciency in a composite with aramid fibers.

HifyberDue to increased energy prices, and/

or the requirement to reduce CO2emissions, the energy consumption offilters is becoming very important in the

Bokela's BoCrossDynamic Filter - a dynamic crossflowfilter - is able to meet these challenges.Therefore, a producer of colorants andcolor pigments decided in favour of theBoCross Dynamic Filter for the filtration ofa red color pigment.

The fine grained organic pigment hasto be concentrated and washed out fromsalt. A considerable number of filterpresses of 60 m² filter area each isoperated for this task.
