At the show, around 360 exhibitorsfeatured targeted solutions for filtrationand separations for all industries.

The Pore Size Meter PSM165developed by TTTTTopasopasopasopasopas can determine thebubble point, overall pore sizedistribution and specific gaspermeability without the use ofmercury. The fist measurementdetermines loss of pressure of the drysample for various gas volume flowrater. After that, the sample is wettedwith a test liquid. According to theDresden-based company, the liquid haslow surface tension and high density. This ensures that the pores to bemeasured are sufficiently wetted. Thenprocess with several steps is used tomeasure the differential pressure

needed to displace the test liquid fromthe pores. It begins with a very lowdifferential pressure level and reachingthe bubble point. It describes thelargest pore of the structure.

As the differential pressureincreases, the size of the pores beingreleased decreases until the test liquidis fully displaced from the pore struc-ture. The relative comparison of dryand wet measurements results in avolume flow-specific differential pres-sure distribution. By means of a capi-llary model corrected with an empiricadjustment factor, the actual pore sizedistribution can be calculated.

Mann + HummelMann + HummelMann + HummelMann + HummelMann + Hummel has animpressive track record. Filtrationperformance can also be increasedsignificantly even without the use ofglass fibres. Various filter layers, incombination with a basiccellulose media, are oftenthe medium of choice forthese applications. Thedeveloped Multigradetechnology is used in high-resistance fuel filters andcan now be found in almostevery motor vehicle with adiesel engine. Thesecombinations of meltblownfine fibre layers with verydense filter papers providefor outstandingperformance data.

In air filtration, mediacoated with nanofibres are among thefront-runners in filter efficiency. A paperbase is covered with ultra fine fibresusing an electrospinning process, a

technology performed by Mann +Hummel as part of its own manufacturingprocess. These fibres, which are onlyvisible with electron microscopes andhave a mean diameter of just 150nanometres, ensure that even the finestparticles of dust, with separationefficiency of up 99.98%, are reliablycaptured in the finished element.

‘Over the years, the exhibition hasgrown to a major event in the field offiltration. Filtech is where we meet ourmost important suppliers in one placeand get inspired by new ideas and thelatest developments in filtration. Thisvaluable input is crucial for our owninnovative solutions.’ said aspokesperson of Mann+Hummel.

Simon Hueweler, marketing manager, added, ‘The mostimportant productsshowcased at Filtech was our nonwovensfor HVAC and other pre-filter media, inparticular those for coarse and mediumdust filters. In addition, our wide range ofliquid filtration products was on display. These products are excellent for filtrationof emulsions and oils. We have alsocreated belt filter media from which weexpect to generate a high attention at theshow. Our new synthetic engine airmedia portfolio was also showcased atthe Filtech.’

The Montex 8500TT stenter is said tobe ideal for the preparation of filtermaterials. It offers a stenter frame for

drying and finishing woven andnonwoven materials, highstretching devices in length andweft direction up to 10,000 N,with high operatingtemperatures up to 320oC.According to Jürgen Hanel,Head of Technical Textiles,MonfortsMonfortsMonfortsMonfortsMonforts developed the firststenter with the possibility ofthermosetting PTFE without oilgreasing in the stenter chainand in the width adjustment. This protects workers and theenvironment from harmful oilvapours and keeps the filtermaterial clean.

Furthermore, the foampadder is able to run twodifferent foams at each side ofthe material. For nonwovenapplications, this is recognised

as a cost effective applicator whilstretaining the porosity of the materials. After modification, this applicator canbe used for thick felt and wovenmaterials. 'With the foam solution, ourcustomer saves on drying costs andcan run much higher production speedscompared with a liquid padder,'confirmed Jürgen Hanel.

The long established in 1884 astextile machinery manufacturer Monfortswas present for the second time,Mr Hanel was very vocal about theirparticipation, 'visitors at this year's eventwere more from Europe and a flux fromUS - an interesting sign for Europeanfiltration sector - were more focused ontheir requirements and were mainly forcoating and drying for us. TTTTTechnical Absorbents Ltd (Technical Absorbents Ltd (Technical Absorbents Ltd (Technical Absorbents Ltd (Technical Absorbents Ltd (TAL)AL)AL)AL)AL)demonstrated how its technology can beused to effectively remove water form awide range of oils and fuels.

TAL displayed its core SAFTM (SuperAbsorbents Fibre) product range andalso its converted nonwoven filter mediafabrics. A team of product developmentspecialists was available to demonstratehow the products work and provideadvice if required.

A significant reason for the majorityof oil and fuel system failures is thepresence of high water levels indissolved, dispersed and free water. TheSAF-based filter media fabrics canremove both dispersed and free water tovery low ppm levels which results inreduced fuel and oil degradation, andprovides the required filter quality for

efficient machine operation.'SAF absorbs up to 200 times its own

weight in demineralised water,'explained Dr Mark Paterson, productdevelopment director. 'As a result, it is akey component for a wide range ofenhanced nonwoven filter media fabricsthat are designed to remove high levelsof water and particulates from aviationfuel, automotive diesel and a wide rangeof oils. Such fabrics help reduce problemsassociated with water contamination. Wehave developed a diverse range ofproducts for such applications. We canalso work closely with customers todesign and manufacture bespoke fabricsto meet specific requirements,' he added.

Dr Mark Paterson said,' the Filtechevent is very relevant to our line ofproducts, 60% of the visitors to our standshown interest in SAF to be blended withother synthetic fibres such as polyester, cellulose, nylon and aramids. A widerange of spun yarns from SAF can beproduced using common spinningtechnologies. Since SAF can be incorpo-rated into woven materials and fabrics, after first being processed into a yarn. Haver and Boecker's competitiveadvantage lies in its unique experienceand continuous programme of research, which keeps it one step ahead of itscompetitors. This combination of traditionand innovation allows it to meet andusually exceed the high expectations ofits customers. Furthermore, the exactingcontrol of its production processes beginswith its own design and manufacture ofthe machines that it uses and extendsright through to its tightly controlledproduction processes.

RPD HIFLO-S offers significantlylonger service life for increased productionruns and reliability. Where conventionalfilter cloths have reached their limits, thenewly developed RPD HIFLO-S opens upnew dimensions for filtration.

Using an entirely new weavingtechnology developed by Haver andBoecker, a three dimensional poregeometry is created that makes industrialfiltration processes more efficient, fasterand more economical than ever before.

Co-extrusion is a multi-layerextruded netting that can besubsequently oriented where differentpolymers can form different layers on thesame netting configuration. It is a squarenetting construction and Conwed has theability to build netting with A/B, A/B/A,and A/B/C layer combinations. 'Nettingis an ideal reinforcement and bondingelement to create exceptional compositeswith film, paper, foil, foam, bubble wrap, nonwoven and other fabrics. It islightweight yet very strong. It is anexceptional reinforcement material.

Nettings are used in filtration devicesfor various purposes:

They provide a sturdy case to containfilter media in cartridge applicationsprotecting delicate filter media from

damage during manufacturing, handlingand cleaning.

Spacer nettings are used when fluidor air is directed in a parallel waythrough the filter media and consistentgapping is needed for optimal filterperformance. A good example of this isReverse Osmosis where, for example, sea water is converted to fresh water.

Pleating is added to filters, via a roll-to-roll or knife pleating, to allow the useof more media in a confined space.

The filter media is supported withnettings in order to also meet pressurerequirements of the filtration process. Thefilter device is completely recyclable orincinerable, which is not the case whenusing metal support materials.

decide for the Filtech 2018 participation.'IREMA'sIREMA'sIREMA'sIREMA'sIREMA's filter media products are

exclusively manufactured on productionmachines designed and built in-house.The specific manufacturing technologyfor filter media enables them to flexiblydesign media out of coarse, fine andultrafine fibres.

The combination of different fibrediameters allows to design andmanufacture progressive filter media. This provides the opportunity to achievean excellent balance between filtrationefficiency, air permeability anddurability. By taking micro and very finefibres (in diameters less than 1 µm) theirmedia can capture fine and very fine

particles when air is filtered.Polypropylene (PP) as the basic

material has additional outstandingadvantages. PP-material is hydrophobicand does not support the growth ofmicroorganisms such as bacteria, moldand fungi.

IREMA filter media are used in avariety of applications where differenttechnical features are a must:

They have their production facility inHerdecke, Germany. Their manufacturingprocess yields spunbonds of outstandingevenness at web widths of up to 3200mm and variable square weights.

EntecEntecEntecEntecEntec odour filters are for thepurpose of odour treatment, there arevarious possibilities depending on thesector which they are used. Entec hasspecialised in the field of odourtreatment. The wide knowledgeand experience they have gained haveled to a range of high-grade productsand services in the odour treatmentfield.

The Entec HC70 odour filter -This filter is self-breathing and isused to combat the smelloriginating from sewage pumpingstations and storage/sedimantation basins.

There is a stainless steelcassette or a filterbag inside thefilter filled with filter granules. Byfitting the filter on the roof of apumping station or basin, thecontaminated air streams are ledthrough the odour filter byconvection. When the contaminatedair, such as H2S flows through theEntec HC70 filter, the filtergranules react with thecontaminated air and neutralise

them so the surroundings are free frombad odour.

Entec has already installed more than1100 odour filters. More than 1100places free from bad odour.

The core of Blücher GmbHBlücher GmbHBlücher GmbHBlücher GmbHBlücher GmbH is basedon spherical, high-performanceadsorbents, which are similar to activatedcarbon in how they react, but far superiorin performance. They are branded -Saratoga and Saratech - and pollutants, odours and other unwanted substancescan be reliably filtered out of gases andfluids and then safely bonded inside them.

Blücher filter technologies can beused wherever undesirable or evenhazardous pollution has to beeliminated. A recent application areahas been the extraction of metals fromex-industrial sites by means of ahydrometallurgical process.

Research, development and

innovation have also made Blücher aworld market leader for CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological and nucleardefense) protection. Over ten million of thecompany's Saratoga-branded protectivesuits and systems, for instance, have so farbeen supplied in over 40 countries.

The Saratech high-performanceadsorbents and hydrometallurgicaltechnologies of Blücher provide anopportunity to economically use evenchallenging deposits. Special techno-logies have now been developed, whichenable complex wastes containing metalsto be rendered completely harmless.

BosmanBosmanBosmanBosmanBosman Fuzzy Filter lies in a pinkmulti-fibre ball. The innovative, costeffective Fuzzy Filter uses compressiblemedia for variable porosity, with highsolids storage and non-filtered waterneeded for washing.

The high porosity of the ball allowshydraulic filtration rates up to 100 m3/m2/h. The Fuzzy Filters achieves a highrate of solids removal down to particlesizes of 4 microns. The total porosity ofthe filter bed can be altered to suitinfluent characteristics by mechanicallycompressing the media.

The media porosity and solidsremoval can be optimized to maximizesolids capture and run time.

The filter industry has a wide varietyof requirements from an adhesiveperspective and KleiberitKleiberitKleiberitKleiberitKleiberitmanufacturing adhesives and coatings. The adhesives must be able to embed thefilters securely and are also subjected awide range of different environments. Forthese applications, and in addition to the2C PUR liquid and epoxy adhesives, hotmelts can be used. They arepredominately used for fold fixing, bonding of the fold bands as well as thebonding of the filter top and sides.Reactive hotmelts are being used forparticularly innovative applications. These combine the positive productproperties such as temperature andclimate resistance, a permanent flexibleglue line with the demands for highgreen and handling strength. In additionto this reactive polyurethane hotmeltshave excellent fogging values. They arelow in emission and neutral in odour.

Sandler'sSandler'sSandler'sSandler'sSandler's new synthetic filtermedium enAIRsave combines optimumperformance and reduced energy usage.

Three filtering layers make enAIRsave anideal depth filter medium : a particularlylarge inner surface is achieved through thedifferent filter layers and the use of finestsubmicron fibres. Large quantities of dustcan be deposited in the coarser layers, optimising filtration performancethroughout the entire service life accordingto information from the manufacturer.

Air can keep flowing even if the filter

is already loaded with dust, the pressuredrop increases only very slowly duringuse. The filter pockets are also self-supporting, adjusting to the volume flowin the ventilation shaft and offering onlyvery little air resistance themselves.

Peter Reich, Manager FiltrationProducts Division, Sandler GmbH: ‘Inrecent years, the number of visitors hasincreased along with the scale of thetrade fair. Being a nonwovensmanufacturer, the Filtech brings togetherexactly the audience we are looking toaddress. Therefore, the Filtech 2016again was a great success for Sandler.’
