SUMMER NEWS 2015 | 1 SUMMER 2015 HIV Outreach. Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region operates a robust Community-Based Outreach and Testing Program in the Greater Cincinnati area. We provide nearly 2,000 HIV and Hepatitis C (HCV) tests each year. The project is based in the Northside neighborhood of Cincinnati at the offices of Caracole, Inc., a local nonprofit organization that provides case management and housing services to those living with HIV/AIDS. The tests are all anonymous and free. Testing is available on a walk-in basis at Caracole or via our RV that travels throughout the Greater Cincinnati region to be accessible to the most at-risk local populations. We also use the RV when we attend health fairs and community events such as Pride (celebration of our local LGBTQ community) and the “Closing the Health Gap” community fair. As part of the outreach, we also distribute more than 10,000 condoms each year. What can clients expect during a test? We use a rapid test that is administered with an oral swab. Test results are available in about 20 minutes. While waiting, staff members talk with the client about risk factors, HIV and safer sex practices. If the test is positive for HIV, a confirmatory test is performed and the county public health department is notified as required by law. The client is then referred to Caracole for case management and to other resources for local medical care programs. We also provide education session for those who are HIV-positive focusing on: HIV and the law; disclosure to partners, family and friends; and managing HIV. This has been a popular program in the community. We are funded by the Ohio Department of Health, Hamilton County Public Health, and Public Health-Dayton & Montgomery County (for Butler and Warren counties). We have also applied to the CDC in partnership with Caracole to expand the program and we expect to learn if we are funded in June. If funded, this grant would also allow us to provide testing in Northern Kentucky. Choice words. Providing access to high quality health care and education that empower people to make informed private decisions about their reproductive lives and sexual health. Testing the community’s highest risk populations.

HIV Outreach.Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region operates a robust Community-Based Outreach and Testing Program in the Greater Cincinnati area. We provide nearly 2,000 HIV and Hepatitis C (HCV) tests each year. The project is based in the Northside neighborhood of Cincinnati at the offices of Caracole, Inc., a local nonprofit organization that provides case management and housing services to those living with HIV/AIDS.

Planned Parenthood Launches Generations Brain Trust — A Mentor ProgramSince the beginning, Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region has experienced tremendous volunteer support. For the past 20 years, the most recent group of dedicated volunteers and donors have been vital to positioning Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region as one of the strongest Planned Parenthood affiliates in the nation by advocating for us within the community, serving on our board and committees, reaching out to new supporters and pioneering successful fundraising events such as the Diamond Award Gala, now in its 12th year. Recently, the next generation of southwest Ohio volunteer leaders has begun to emerge through P2 (Parents and Professionals for Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region) and PUSH (Professionals United for Sexual Health).

The goal of the Generations Brain Trust program is to bring these two generations of leaders together to share ideas, network, learn from and help each other and the organization as a whole.

The concept of Brain Trust was introduced by Kimberly Hamlin, founder of P2 and a PPSWO Board member. Kathy Brinkman, Planned Parenthood Board Chair, said “Kimberly’s idea immediately appealed to me and we jointly started it, confident that future leaders will emerge from the Brain Trust.”

The Cincinnati group has already hosted their inaugural events and we look forward to forming the Dayton group soon.

6-Week Abortion Ban (HB69)

HB69 bans abortion at just six weeks, when most women don’t know they are pregnant and includes no exceptions for victims of rape or incest. • Current status: passed in House

• The bill is now in the Senate, where Senate President Faber has said it will be assigned to a committee. While we are hoping the bill never reaches the Senate floor for a vote, we encourage our supporters to contact their State Senators to denounce this legislation.

20-Week Abortion Ban (HB 117 and SB 127)

This bill would prohibit the performance of an abortion on a pregnant woman when the probable post-fertilization age of the fetus is twenty weeks or greater.• Current status: introduced in House and Senate

March 11, 2015

• HB 117 was referred to the House Community & Family Advancement Committee

• SB 127 was referred to the Senate Health & Human Services

Proposed Budget Analysis (HB 64)

• Current status: House Finance Committee

• Governor Kasich’s proposed state budget includes cuts to Medicaid programs impacting women by eliminating the family planning Medicaid waiver which afforded women up to 200% of the federal poverty limit access to birth control, prenatal and pregnancy care. Without this waiver, pregnant women earning between $21,000—$31,000 per year or less will be unable to access essential health benefits including covered copays and other costs associated with family planning.

A group from Generations Brain Trust toured the Surgery Center in May as part of the group’s kick-off.

Schedule an Appointment. Anytime. Anywhere.Every month, hundreds of patients tell us about their experience with Planned Parenthood in our patient satisfaction survey. And, every month we consistently find 25-30% of our patients indicating they learned about Planned Parenthood online; but the online experience was incomplete because the patient still needed to call and talk to someone to actually get an appointment. In March, a patient commented, “Online appointments would make things easier.” We couldn’t agree more! So on Monday, April 13th, we launched an Online Appointment System (OAS). So far, it’s off to a great start.

Three minutes after OAS went live, we received our first online appointment request. Now, several weeks in, we’re averaging approximately 100 requests per week — with absolutely no marketing or other promotion.

This approach to scheduling allows us to meet patients where they are — online. It also gives more control to patients to make an appointment when it’s most convenient for them — not just when our call center is open. It takes our promise of Care. No Matter What. to a whole new level.

In the coming weeks we will begin to market this service to ensure our patients know they have this great new option. We hope you will help. Make sure all your contacts know that Planned Parenthood is here for them. Anytime. Anywhere.

Patient Services Team Pushes for Constant Clinical Quality ImprovementsIn order to improve the quality of care delivered at our health centers, Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region has partnered with Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s Clinical Quality Improvement Collaborative. Together, we are addressing specific performance measures by identifying opportunities to enhance care and service delivery at our health centers.Areas of focus for this clinical quality improvement initiative initially include Chlamydia screenings, cervical cancer screenings, body mass index assessments (BMI) and smoking cessation. The goal for this program is to elevate our effectiveness of care and improve health outcomes for our patients by meeting or exceeding the national benchmarks for these services.

For cervical cancer screenings, for example, Planned Parenthood’s goal is to reach the national benchmark through encouraging Pap test conversations during all scheduling requests via the call center, follow-up with patients in need of a Pap test, informing patients on the importance of screenings in our waiting rooms and via social media content. These ongoing conversations and reminders are important as Planned Parenthood is a critical resource for cervical cancer preventative care, including HPV vaccination and screenings. Each year, more than 12,000 women in the U.S. are diagnosed with cervical cancer, and more than 4,000 American women die from the disease. Planned Parenthood’s current cervical cancer screening guidelines are:

• Initial Pap screening at age 21;

• Pap screening every three years for women aged 21-29;

• Pap screening every three years for women aged 30-64 or every five years when women in this age group receive combined Pap and HPV tests.

Planned Parenthood wants to remind women to get screened for the disease, and that all of our health centers are here to provide professional, nonjudgmental, confidential care no matter what.

2015 Diamond Award GalaWe are very proud to announce that Carol Kabel is this year’s Diamond Award honoree. She will be honored at the 2015 Diamond Award Gala on October 3, 2015 at the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza.Carol began volunteering for Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region in 2008 as a board member. She quickly assumed increasing responsibility, first, as vice chair in 2010 and then as chair for three years.

During her time as Board Chair, Carol successfully led a CEO transition and an 18-month merger due diligence process. Upon conclusion of the board’s decision to pull back from the potential merger, the affiliate entered its triennial accreditation and strategic planning processes. Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region achieved full accreditation status from Planned Parenthood Federation of America in 2013 and adopted a sound strategic plan through fiscal year 2016-17.

As Carol helped Planned Parenthood to meet these difficult challenges, she attended every board and committee meeting and event and even modeled in a PUSH (Professionals United for

Sexual Health) fashion show. Carol continues to volunteer on the gala, strategic planning and major gifts advisory committees. She joined the Planned Parenthood Cincinnati Region Foundation board this year.

Please join us in congratulating Carol for this well-deserved honor.

For information on attending the event or becoming a sponsor, please visit www.DiamondAwardGala.org or call 513.824.7824.

Dayton Health Center Upgrades Revealed at Preview PartyOn March 26, Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region unveiled the newly renovated Dayton Health Center to generous donors and friends who made the $289,000 renovation possible. The remodeling project kicked off in 2014 in response to our renewed focus on customer service and patient experience as outlined in the organization’s strategic plan.Planned Parenthood partnered with SPACES, a full-service interior design, construction and architecture firm and implemented many of the new facility guidelines set forth by Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Experienced SPACES designer Josh Wagoner provided design, execution and installation of the project, which included furniture and artwork.

“It was an honor to work with Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region on renovating the Dayton Health Center. Patients have always received excellent and essential care here,” said Wagoner. “We needed to bring the look and feel of the health center up to that same level of excellence, so patients feel comfortable and welcome.”

Funds for the project were raised through donations from Dayton-area Planned Parenthood supporters including the Planned Parenthood Miami Valley Foundation, The Dayton Foundation, The Virginia Kettering Foundation, Professionals United for Sexual Health (PUSH), and many individual donors.

Another Year, Another Successful PUSH Arm Wrestling Event PUSH Dayton is back in the saddle after hosting their fourth annual Ladies Arm Wrestling Event held on May 3, 2015. This Kentucky Derby-themed romp showcased the finest in spring fashions, the most fantastical hats, thirst-quenching bourbon beverages, a silent auction and...lady arm wrestlers!

The event was held for a fourth time at the Trolley Stop in the Oregon District of Dayton and raised a record breaking $5,400 for patient care in the Dayton area; more than 130 people attended.

“That brings the awareness part, that PUSH Dayton is here, Planned Parenthood is here,” said Jennifer Lumpkin, PUSH Chair. “Hopefully after, they’ll look at the website and think, it doesn’t matter if I’m a man or a woman; Planned Parenthood is somewhere I can go. That’s a huge part of PUSH Dayton’s mission.”

Jonathan and Tara Eaton

V O L U N T E E R S P O T L I G H T

Tara EatonEvery Tuesday for six years, Tara Eaton has spent time at Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region to help with fundraising efforts. In addition to office work, she is a member of our gala committee. Tara began volunteering at the Milwaukee affiliate when she was 16 years old. She was a patient chaperone, accompanying patients in the exam room at a time when doctors weren’t permitted to meet alone with patients.

At 24, Tara moved to Chicago and served as an abortion counselor pre-Roe v. Wade. She provided patients with information about how to get an abortion which was only legal in New York or Washington. In a group setting, she told them how to buy a ticket, how to get to the airport, and what to expect. Traveling was expensive and most of the women had never flown before. She helped them to get on the right flights.

Tara volunteered at our affiliate after moving to Cincinnati and later joined the board. Her first meeting was the emergency meeting after the 1985 firebombing. Tara commented, “In the two years after the bombing, it felt like we were pioneers. It felt like a mission, working together; it was a good feeling. People really stepped up to donate and to pay for the new center.” She served on the board for three years.

Raising a family while working fulltime took her way from Planned Parenthood for a while, but in 2008, she retired from her job at Seven Hills School and began volunteering again.

“It’s important you give your time and energy and work toward a really good cause, and this is it for me. Through the years and all the Planned Parenthood affiliates I’ve worked for, I’ve always met smart, entertaining, interesting and committed people,” said Tara.

Thank you, Tara, for your unwavering dedication and support.

Linda Gatten ButlerLinda has been a faithful volunteer and supporter since 1981.

She serves as the chair of our Springfield Community Leadership Council (CLC) and has led the group in a renewed effort to grow membership and awareness about Planned Parenthood’s services in the community. In addition to her current role as the CLC chair, Linda’s company, Butler Consulting, has donated multiple strategic planning sessions to our organization.

“Linda is a gift to work with; she is always ready to lead, encouraging to staff and challenges other supporters to do all they can for our mission,” said Crystal Justice Director of Major Gifts/Planned Giving.

“Life is all about choices! That was and is an important value in our family. As a Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region volunteer and donor, I am proud to support choices and boldly share the good news about the organization,” said Butler. “From my mother carrying a Planned Parenthood banner in the 1960s to my continued involvement as a donor, we are all about choices, support and advocacy. I invite others to ‘carry the banner’ and advocate with pride.”

Welcome Dr. Sapna Kalsy Dr. Sapna Kalsy joined the Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region staff in December 2014, soon after moving to Cincinnati from California with her husband, an orthopedic surgeon at Children’s Hospital. Previously Dr. Kalsy worked for Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest, Planned Parenthood Santa Barbara and Planned Parenthood Health Systems Winston-Salem, so she comes to us with a great deal of knowledge and Planned Parenthood pride!

Dr. Kalsy received her Doctorate of Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine and completed two years of Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center before transferring to the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. There, she earned a Master’s Degree in Public Health from the University of North Carolina School of Public Health and completed her residency training in Preventive Medicine/Public Health at University of North Carolina Hospitals.

Dr. Kalsy is currently working with Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region three days per week. The majority of her time is dedicated to the Surgery Center, but she will work four days per month with our family planning health centers providing oversight, reviewing charts, supervising new clinicians and completing special procedures.

Besides her work at Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region, Dr. Kalsy is actively involved in local public health initiative. She is an outdoor enthusiast and enjoys traveling.

We are pleased to have Dr. Kalsy as part of our family!

Ruth Barrows Dedicated board member 1976 – 1989

Ruth Barrows (1922 – 2015) advocated for every child to be a wanted child. Even in the last months of her life, she advised young women to visit Planned

Parenthood and encouraged health care providers to refer patients to us.

According to her daughter, Ruth first visited a Planned Parenthood center in 1951 as a patient. In the late 1960s, she and other volunteers visited Cincinnati-area maternity wards to give information about contraception to new mothers. She joined the board in 1976, traveling to Washington, DC for the national conference when she was Board Chair. She continued to serve on the board during the critical rebuilding period after the 1985 firebombing. Fellow board members and past CEOs recall her kindness and quiet determination.

Her six decades of service continues to influence southwest Ohio women and their families today. Friend Susan Kindel remembers her as a woman before her time. “She was well-educated and principled, but always positive and encouraging. She introduced me to Planned Parenthood early in my adulthood and forever thereafter was the ‘cool mom.’ I will always remember her fondly for her openness.”
