June 2015 NEWSLETTER Planned Parenthood Association of Utah Education For over 40 years, the federal Title X (ten) family planning program has provided reproductive health care to low- income, under-insured, and uninsured men, women, and young people. Planned Parenthood Association of Utah (PPAU) has been a direct grantee of Title X since the 1980’s and has a long history of providing reproductive health care to individuals who may otherwise lack access. In 2014, PPAU provided affordable preventive cancer screenings, birth control, and empowering education to over 33,000 Utahns via subsidized health care services we were able to offer through Title X funds. We provided over $3 million dollars worth of care, or 82,173 family planning visits, with the support of Title X last year. We know that sex education, information, and access to birth control improve health outcomes for infants, children, women and families. We know that for many individuals, the only care they can afford is at a Title X clinic like PPAU. It will forever be a head-scratcher why policy makers would even consider doing away with family planning funding. Yet, Congress is currently kicking the idea around. Please stay tuned as we keep you updated as we go through the federal budgeting process. There is talk this week of cutting the Title X program altogether, which certainly won’t do. We will be your eyes and ears in Washington and will keep you informed. School’s out for the summer! Our Education team is winding down another successful school year of outreach to more than 9,000 youth, parents, and educators. Teen Success, a support program for pregnant and parenting teens, celebrated five of its participants graduating from high school. All of its graduates are pursuing higher educational opportunities. Both the Summit County Teen Council and the Salt Lake Teen Council had end-of-year parties in May. All 30 Teen Council participants (18 in Salt Lake and 16 in Summit County) deliver peer-to-peer lessons on healthy relationships and reproductive health. For over 40 years, the federal Title X (ten) family planning program has provided reproductive health care to low- income, under-insured, and uninsured men, women, and young people.

Over the last 6 months, Dr. Par Royer, Lisa Balland, and myself have participated in a number of com-munity meetings coordinated by the Refugee Women’s Health committee. The education sessions have covered topics such as anatomy, STI’s, and contraception, as well as parenting

and teen-parent relationships. Dr. Royer, as part of her research grant, has led the discussion about what women want in regards to reproductive health care and health care in general. She recently has been accepted for publication about much of her research. Lisa brings insightful teaching methods to the group meetings, including members of Teen Council! In addition to all of this, Lisa, Teen Council member Eliza Samore and I recently participated in the IRC Health Fair. The work has been rewarding and I thought I would share it with y’all!
