ACT/SAT Scores for CollegesIt is best to have your ACT/SAT scores sent to colleges directly from the ACT/SAT testing company. When you register to take these tests, you are allowed to send it to four colleges without ex-tra cost. Junior Retreat Day Keeping with an important and special Pius X tradition, our junior class had their annual retreat on Tuesday, October 10. The junior “Servant Leadership” retreat opened with a talk by Ms. Angela Reiling, the current volunteer coordi-nator at Catholic Social Services and mother of a Pius graduate. Ms. Reiling spoke to the junior class about the importance of discerning the gifts the Lord has given us and using those to love and serve others. On the re-treat, each student participated in a 2-hour service project at one of 20 different agencies that serve the Lincoln community. Some worked with children, the poor or the elderly. Others helped with cleaning or grounds work outside. Despite the variety of projects - a few out in the damp, cold weather - stu-dents shared how meaningful the day had been and left with a greater appreci-ation for sacrificing for others. Special thanks to the 60+ faculty, staff, and parents that helped drive stu-dents to the service sites and lead small groups. An additional thank you to the agencies that provided service projects and lunch for the students. So many people came together to help make our Pius X Junior Retreat Day a success. We could not have done it without you. God bless you!

Campus MinistrySarah Swafford Comes to Pius X!Pius X was happy and very blessed to welcome nation-al speaker, Sarah Swafford, on October 11th to speak to the study body about virtue, authentic friendship, and learning to relate better to one another. Sarah is an energetic, dynamic speaker with an in-credible gift of connecting with the heart. She found-ed her own ministry and used her experiences as a Residence Director on the college campus to publish her first book, ¬Emotional Virtue: A Guide to Dra-ma-Free Relationships. Her time at Pius extended into the afternoon as she greeted students at lunch and spent time sharing life with them. Senior Kristie Le has heard Sarah speak on more than one occasion and says, “Sarah Swafford talks from the heart. I’ve never listened to a speaker who has left me wanting more. She’s so intriguing and re-latable; she understands what we are going through and she is not afraid to talk about it.”

As the holidays approach, parties become numerous, and with each party comes the challenges of keeping your commitment to healthy eating. If you are hosting a gathering this holiday season you can reduce fat and calories without sacrificing taste by swapping out a few ingredients in your favorite recipes:• Using two egg whites in place of one egg can reduce the cholesterol

and produce the same result• Use low-sodium, fat-free chicken broth in your mashed potatoes to

add flavor and lighten holiday fat content• Substitute applesauce for oil, margarine or butter in muffins and quick

breads like banana bread. Try substituting a small amount at first, as the more you substitute the more the texture of the finished product changes

• For dips, sauces and pie toppings, use non-fat yogurt, sour cream or whipped topping

• Sliced almonds make a delicious, crunch topping in place of fried onion rings.

Pack your shopping cart with plenty of fresh vegetables like sweet potatoes, winter squash, broccoli, carrots and green beans, Apples, cranberries and pears combine easily for a tasty salad, fruit crisp or topping for the turkey. If you are a guest at a dinner party or gathering, consider these tips to keep your night healthy, happy and safe:• If you plan on treating yourself later, start your day with a small meal

that includes whole grains, fruit, dairy foods and protein like eggs, ham or peanut butter.

• Don’t starve yourself beforehand. Rather, eat a small low-calorie meal or snack such as fruit or a bagel so you aren’t tempted to overdo your calorie intake for the day.

• Select carefully between foods you definitely will eat, those you will sample and those you will skip

• Don’t rush to eat. Socialize and settle into the festivities before you eat.

• Move your socializing away from the buffet or appetizer trays. This will minimize the unconscious nibbling.

St. Nick is coming to Pius X Alumni and friends of Pius X are invited and welcome to join us in celebration of the Feast Day of St. Nick from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at Pius X High School! Would you like your baby Jesus from your nativity blessed this year? The Nativity Blessing will take place in the Pius X Chap-el at 5:30 p.m. Afterwards, come on down to the Commons and get your picture taken with an authentic looking St. Nick without the mall or zoo lines and photo prices! This won’t be your traditional Santa Clause photo! Be sure to bring your cell phones and take your own, or we will have a photographer available to post the photos on our Alum-ni /High School Facebook photo gallery to download at home! Have fun decorating your own sugar cookie, coloring a St. Nick page to take home with you, and listening/singing to beautiful Christmas Carols! Come and show your kids your ale mater, their future high school, or where their big brother or sister attend school each day, and make some new family memories! There will be no charge, but free will donations will be accepted.
