Scripture Reflection (by Michelle Mascolo, Director of Faith Formation)
Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Last month marked ten years since I attended World Youth Day in Australia. It was a trip that changed everything for me in many areas of my life, but most especially spiritually.
Part of the World Youth Day experience is being able to taste the unique cuisine of whatever country you are visiting. Who doesn’t love trying new food, right? The people of Australia packaged up some 3.5 million meals that were distributed to the 223,000 pilgrims that attended the events during those six days. The meal packages consisted of foods known to Australia, such as Tim-Tams, lamingtons, baked beans, vegemite spread, Weet-Bix Crunch cereal bars, Cadbury chocolate bars, and meat pies.
I remember for one meal, they served us the meat pies, which were warmed up for us. I was so hungry at that time since we didn’t really carry snacks with us while we walked around. I open up my meal bag, and upon seeing all the other food items, I knew I needed something that would sustain me until the next meal, whenever that would be or whatever would be served. I decided to take a bite of the meat pie, take a chance on something that the Australians were proud to say would be good. Well, it wasn’t, and I don’t think I finished it. I don’t remember what I ate instead, but knowing me, it was probably the sweet dessert foods.
Remembering this experience, I can’t help but think of the Israelites in this weekend’s First Reading from Exodus. The Israelites were complaining to Moses and Aaron because they were led into the desert where they were hot, tired, thirsty and hangry – a term used now-a-days to describe someone who is so hungry, they get angry.
Since God was a loving God, and upon hearing their grumbling, he sent down food for the Israelites, to assess whether or not they were going to be faithful to His commands. God provided them with quail, a mid-size bird, as well as manna, the “fine flakes like hoarfrost” that appeared on the ground in the morning. These two food items weren’t familiar to the Israelites, so they asked what it was. Moses told them, “This is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat.” After all, they asked for something to eat so they wouldn’t starve in the desert, and their loving God provided.
Instead of being happy that they were given something to eat, they had to question what it was. God provided, therefore they shouldn’t complain. In Australia, the meat pies weren’t the only option I could choose to eat. I had other options, and I didn’t complain about that. The food in Australia wasn’t the only good thing I experienced while there. The food wasn’t life-changing. What was life-changing was being able to grow deeper in my relationship with God and experience the worldwide universality of the Catholic Church. I was many miles away from my home parish, yet I felt connected to the other pilgrims in such a strong way. During one of the evenings of Eucharistic Adoration, I remember being awed at how connected I felt to those around me, but more importantly, how close God felt in that moment as we adored Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. The food was interesting, but that intimate moment of personal connection with God will forever be in my heart. It’s the moment when everything changed in my life. In the Gospel story for this weekend, which is known as the “Bread of Life Sermon,” we hear how the people search for Jesus after he feeds them with bread and fish, as you may remember from last week’s Gospel. He filled their stomachs, and now they want more. He lovingly confronts them, saying that are looking for him not because of the miraculous sign he performed but because he provided them with physical nourishment.
When the crowd asks him what they can do to accomplish the works of God, he answers that they should believe in the one God sent, namely, Jesus himself. They continue to ask for a sign to show that he is the one
sent by God, even going as far as asking for manna like their ancestors received in the desert long ago. Jesus responds with this: “…it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
I think we take for granted the food that we have available to us. We may know when our next meal will be and what we will be eating, but there are many others in our world, maybe in our own backyard, that are starving for food as nourishment. But there are just as many people starving to be nourished by the Bread of Life. Jesus said to the crowd that day, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to be will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.”
The crowd was hungry. Hungry for food that is a temporary fix. But what they were truly seeking was something that would satisfy them for eternity, namely, Jesus himself, and that is why they wanted to follow him where ever he went.
I think the intimate, personal, and overwhelmingly loving connection I felt with God before the Blessed Sacrament in Adoration in Australia ten years ago is exactly what people are hungry for today. We were made to be in communion with others. But we were also made to be satisfied by what gives us eternal life: the Bread of Life, Jesus Christ Himself. Of the two kinds of hunger, material food satisfies bodily hunger for a little while, but spiritual hunger is never satisfied; some hungers can only be satisfied by Jesus. Christ alone satisfies the hunger of the human heart and soul. Let us remember that as we receive Jesus in the Eucharist during today’s Mass.
As human beings, we seem to have a wide array of insatiable desires. We long for more money, more time, and more stuff. We spend millions of dollars each year on remedies for our overeating. We look to
our neighbors to see what they have that we want so we can keep up with them in the race toward happiness. We look for instant gratification only to find that our hunger for whatever it is remains intact.
Stewardship is the pathway to curbing all those cravings. On this journey, we let go of things that keep us tied down to this world and tied up in our sin. All that we have becomes instruments for God to use in our lives and the lives of our neighbors. When we have detached from enough in this world, we find out the truth: Nothing on earth can truly satisfy our cravings completely. Jesus Christ is the sole answer for our needs and desires.
Although the truth is right in front of us at each and every Mass in the Eucharist, we can easily spend our days in denial of that truth. It takes trust to step out in faith and give it all over to God. We are all called to let go and let God be God. Answering the call is easier said than done. However, if we can finally make that bold move, we will find ourselves completed by the One who was with us all along.

We Serve & We Give & We Have FUN!
A Word from the Pastor
Dear Family,
School is back INN (see p. 4 for details) - as you begin to shop for school supplies for the upcoming year, consider the children living in shelters in our neighborhood who are wanting for basic needs like food,
shelter & clothing … let alone school supplies. What an opportunity to help the less fortunate!
HELP! - yes, I need HELP from children grades 3 an up … Fr. Chux & I are in need of altar servers … I will train you …
schedules are very flexible … & you do have FUN! … see details below.
WORTH REPEATING!! Boldly go where many have gone before and help pass on the Good News of Jesus Christ and our Catholic faith! This fall, over 250 children and young people, preschool through grade 8, will sign up to learn more about Jesus and the Catholic faith. At this time, over 100 of these children and young people have no catechist to teach them. You can help by becoming a catechist for Faith Formation. As you nurture the faith of our young, you will learn and grow as well! As one long-time catechist put it, “I learn so much from the children!” We provide you with training, materials, and support. Classes begin September 16. If interested or for more information, contact Fr. Valentine at [email protected]!
St. Pius X Feast & Festival - Planning for our annual Feast is in full planning mode. How can you help? Consider being a sponsor - opportunities for any budget. Volunteers are needed! You will work hard, but you will laugh, make new friends, & have lots of FUN! Volunteers are known to sign up for one day & have so much fun that they return to serve on all days. See pp. 6-7 for more information. PRAY FOR GOOD WEATHER!!
God Bless You, Fr. Valentine
One of the important messages God gives his people is to serve one another. By becoming an altar server, young people can begin to fulfill God’s request. Altar servers serve the parish family, the priests and one another in celebrating the Mass. They learn to respect God’s church but also learn to respect themselves. It also is a fulfilling way to start a lifetime of service to God, his church and his people.
Grades 3 and up! Any boy or girl who has received their first communion can become an altar server. Altar serving promotes responsibility, accountability, leadership and above all, teamwork AND being an altar
server is fun!
Flexibility! Many families with children have challenging schedules. We offer parents: the opportunity to select the weekend mass times you want your children to serve.
Interested? Contact Fr. Valentine via e-mail at [email protected] or call the Parish Office at (516)938-3956.

We have AMAZING Youth!
My name is Samantha Borruso and I am a rising senior at St. Anthony’s High School. I am honored to be a lector, eucharistic minister, and a member of the parish council here at St. Pius X. When I was in the sixth grade, Father Valentine tapped me on the shoulder and asked if I would become a lector. I was very nervous since I was not completely comfortable speaking in front of large groups of people but decided to give it a try after he asked me a few more times. Becoming a lector was one of the best
decisions I have ever made. It helped me become a confident public speaker, and I am honored to preach the Word of God to my parish family. As soon as I turned sixteen, Father Valentine immediately asked me to become a Eucharistic Minister. I was overjoyed and completed the training and am so happy that I received the opportunity to participate even more in mass. Being a lector and a eucharistic minister fulfills my role as a disciple, an evangelizer, and a Hand of Christ. At the beginning of my junior year, I was invited to serve
on the St. Pius X Parish Council. I am honored to be one of the two students on council and look forward to meeting with my fellow council members every month. I am humbled to have been chosen to serve as the eyes and ears of our parish and as a consultant to Father Valentine.
I cannot believe how fast my time in high school has gone by; it feels like yesterday that I was a freshman trying to make a difference in my school community. Now, as a rising senior, I can say that I have accomplished that goal. This year, I had the honor of being elected by my peers to serve as the President of the Saint Anthony’s Leadership Team. Saint Anthony’s Leadership Team is a prestigious organization that is all about helping others. Our primary mission is to assist incoming freshmen and striving to reflect the joy in God’s love. Our members contact incoming freshmen and their families to ease their transition into high school. The members also meet with their freshmen during the summer and make sure to answer any questions they may have. It comforts the freshmen to know that they are not going through this journey alone, and they have many people here to help them with anything they need. We also do a lot of community service as a team, from conducting schoolwide food and toy drives, to helping Island Harvest collect food for Long Island pantries, to assisting the Long Island Coalition for
the Homeless at their Candlelight Vigil for those who are homeless on Long Island and to helping the Long Island Triathlon Tour organize their latest triathlon. I have also been a member of the Special Needs Ministry at school since my freshman year. This is one of my favorite organizations my school has to offer. Throughout the year, students with special needs are invited to our school for an afternoon filled with food, games, music, and fun! These children light up my day and show that God’s love is all around us.
This year, I am beyond excited to serve as Captain of the Girls’ Varsity Track and Field Team Throwers. I specialize in weight throw, discus, hammer throw, and shotput. I have been on the team since my sophomore year, and learned many valuable lessons, one of them being, “Failure teaches us the lessons we need in order to succeed.” When I started, I had a lot to learn, and it sometimes would not come easy. Sometimes I would question if throwing was the sport for me, but that was when I would turn to God. I would pray and ask Him to give me the strength to push through. I prayed before every meet, and always felt confident that God was in my corner, always cheering me on. This year, I was honored to qualify and attend the New Balance Track and Field Outdoor Nationals in North Carolina for the Hammer Throw in June. I had an amazing time, and it is an experience I will never forget; having a chance to compete against some of the best throwers in the country.
In my free time, I conduct research at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in Cold Spring Harbor. I was invited to become an intern there the summer after my sophomore year, and I couldn’t imagine my summers any other way. I look forward to going every day and have an amazing mentor who teaches me everything I need to know and more. I have
learned so much over the past year and am beyond thankful for this once in a lifetime opportunity to conduct research in a world-renowned laboratory.
Without my faith, I would not be the person I am today. I have been given so many opportunities and am eternally grateful. My faith has taught me so many lessons, and helped me to be the strong young woman I am. I am so happy to be a part of the St. Pius X family and have met so many amazing people throughout my journey here. St. Pius has become my home, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
Meet Samantha Borruso!

Welcome!
We are glad you are here. We encourage you to explore the offerings of our parish. We think you will find much here to encourage your engagement in our common spiritual journey.
If you regularly worship at St. Pius X Parish, we ask that you register with us. Simply e-mail Fr. Valentine at [email protected] or call the Parish Office at 516-938-3956.
Welcome! Many families with children tend to worship at the monthly Family Mass at 10:30am as well as the 5:15pm Mass on Saturdays which offers contemporary music.
Here are some suggestions to parents to help their children learn to pray the Mass, and create a reverent, prayerful atmosphere at Mass for all ages.
· If you have time, visit the church and walk your child around the worship space and acquaint them with the art, statues and architecture of our beautiful Catholic tradition. Show them the baptismal font and talk about their baptism. Point out the beauty of our stained glass. Stop by the Parish Office - if the pastor is available, he will gladly accompany you on your visit.
· For Mass, arrive early to use the restroom, get a drink, and settle in.
· Children are curious. Sit toward the front. Children will be able to see what the priest is doing and with your help will pay more attention.
· Help your children pray and embrace the Mass. The Mass offers a teaching moment with your children to develop a sense of reverence and respect for the Mass and the sacred.
· Model full participation for your child by actively participating in the Mass responses and singing the hymns.
