Photograph Selection For Outfit 2 (LO4) By Olivia Lewis-Brown

Image 1I selected this medium long shot with a central positioning of my model because of the dynamic use of shape and colour to define my model as the main focal image. For this shot I used manual focus to slightly blur out the background to allows the foreground with the narrow boat prop to become more defined and centralize my model and her chosen costume/outfit. The bright colour scheme incorporated in the mise en scene of the image such as yellows, blues and red however take the attention away from the lighter colours of my models outfit which was one of the reasons why this image was not selected for my final spread. The models direct address and open body language draws the attention of the viewer and the use of high key natural lighting creates a slight glow in the background, highlighting the models form.

Image 2This landscape medium long shot using rule of thirds right hand side positioning was a main candidate for my introductory spread as the dynamic pose the model uses, combined with direct address and high key lighting as well as props such as chairs and tables bring the audience attention to the model as all elements of the image frame the models appearance. The image also left enough room to the left to position a title and sub heading as a title page. However this image was not selected due to the facial expression of the model being obscured by her hand and the full outfit not being completely seen, the image not conforming to a spreads conventions of the outfit becoming the main focal point. My inspiration for this shot and pose was derived from such magazines as teen vogue and Elle fashion magazine.

Image 3 and 4 This long shot depicting my model on the side of a narrowboat was selected due to the fact the audience can see the models entire outfit conforming to typical conventions of a fashion magazine as her outfit becomes the main focal point, the blue colour scheme and colour co ordination allowing the mise en scene to coincide with the outfit of the model. However this image was not selected due to the slight blur on the models face and lack of high definition due to the movement of the model creating a drag and distorting the image slightly.

This medium long shot selected I chose for its high quality focus, high key lighting and dramatic shadow effect giving the image depth and a high fashion look. The plain brick wall mise en scene helps draw attention to the outfit of the model, the recurring flower motif consecutively featured also matches the pattern of the models dress. however I did not select this image due to its lack of direct address, and I felt what I wanted to achieve with having her gaze averted away from the audience in order to create an atmosphere of mystery and keep the focus solely on the outfit was not as effective in the end

Final Cover Image This image I selected as my next spread image as the use of a canted angle, close up an aperture to blur the background mise en scene gave the image its own impact and definition. The low angle of the shot helps establish the models power over the viewer as her outfit becomes the main focal point, the symbolic motif of the daffodil for spring signifying the seasons conventions of rebirth and incorporation of bright colour helps juxtapose the light and dark colour scheme of the image.
