Photograph Selection For Magazine Cover 3

(LO4)-Olivia Lewis-Brown

Photo SelectionImage 1This medium long shot was suitable for a gossip magazine as I caught the model mid laugh making the image appear genuine and not planned as included as a convention in gossip magazines such as heat and Star magazine. However there was not enough available room around the image for important sell lines and a masthead which would not be blotted out or obscured by the main focal image.

Image 2This second medium long shot attempted to spontaneously capture a celebrity/ models reaccion. The models facial features conveying shock were effective in capturing the attention of my target audience, being avid readers of gossip magazines. However the image became slightly blurred with the slight movement of the model and so could not be used as a final cover image as distortion would look unprofessional and disorientate the reception of the audience.

Photo Selection Continued

Image 3This right positioned medium long shot was ideal for a main cover image as it leaft suitable room for sell lines and a mast head without much editing around the main focal image needed. A direct address is effective in drawing in the attention of the audience and the clearly visible blue background adds an extra element of attraction through vivid blue highlighting the darker form of the model allowing her to appear more defined. However this image was not selected due to the high key lighting creating too harsh a reflection off the models face and creating harsh shadows in the background. The reflection of the flash also created a red eye effect making the image appear sloppy and unprofessional.

Image 4This image kept with the initial spontaneous reactions conventions of a gossip magazine as most such as Heat and Ok capture the images of their featured stars without their knowing. However this image was unsuitable as the models moving hand created distortion and her moving mouth created a slight blur on the face. the models facial expression was also unsuitable for the over image as it appears too generic.

Final Cover PhotoImage 5

This medium close up is a perfect candidate for my cover photo as the models direct address and form taking up most of the available image space draws the audience attention and connects well with the target consumer. The models body language conveying spilled secrets by the models hand over her mouth also aids to inspire interest. High key lighting combined with the flash effect on my camera gave the image a bright colour tone, the striking blue and dark costume highlighting the models form making her appear more defined, the reflection of the flash also clearly shows the models facial features and creates a soft glare off of the models cheek, toning down the overall look and harsh shadowing in the background which can be corrected with crop tools in photoshop. contrasting colours used such as black and blue juxtapose one another, allowing a clear and professional looking representation of the main focal image.
