Firemen at Grantham Fire Station teach SureStart Grantham families ‘valuable lessons’ in fire safety SureStart Grantham families had a safety talk on all the dangers of fire and how to plan an escape route from your home. The children all listened very carefully
but couldn’t wait to look around the fire engines!
At last, the children were shown inside and outside of the fire engines and the firemen showed the children all the equipment, how to use it and explained what it was used for. Some children dressed up in the firemen’s uniforms! To end a very busy day, the children had a tour around the Fire Station.
Louise Clark, SureStart Community Nursery Nurse said, ‘It’s been a great
day out for all of our families, just to see the excited looks on the children’s faces when they saw the ‘big red fire engines’ has made it all worth while! All the children got a chance to play on the fire engines and even got to use some of the hoses.
If you would like information on fire safety please telephone the Grantham Fire Station on 01476 565441

If a Child If a child lives with criticism – it learns to condemn. If a child lives with hostility – it learns to fight. If a child lives with ridicule – it leans to be shy.If a child lives with shame – it learns to be guilty. If a child lives with tolerance – it learns to be patient. If a child lives with encouragement – it learns confidence. If a child lives with praise – it learns to appreciate. If a child lives with fairness – it learns justice. If a child lives with security – it learns to have faith. If a child lives with approval – it learns to like itself.
Improving social and emotional development
Twenty five ways to say ‘Well Done’To encourage better behaviour in our children and to build their self esteem here are a few ideas and words to appreciate them and recognise their achievements.

New Sexual Health Drop-in Clinic As from June 2005 Outreach Sexual Health Drop-in
clinics have commenced running on alternative weeks at Harrowby SureStart Centre, Belton Lane Primary School and at the Earlesfield SureStart Centre, Trent Road. Open on Thursdays during term time, 3.30 – 5.00pm.
The Drop-in clinics are run by Julie Loveless, School Nurse and Sexual Health Worker,
no appointment is needed. The clinics offer confidential advice, as well as pregnancy testing and free condoms. If necessary people can be signposted to the appropriate agency such as the Family Planning Clinic, GP or Genital-urinary Medicine Clinic (GUM).
The clinics give the opportunity for young people particularly to make informed choices as regard to their sexual health.People of all ages within the locality can access the facility which has a welcoming and friendly atmosphere.
Improving health
If you have thought about or would like to stop smoking please phone our friendly phoenix smoking cessation advisor Sandra Simons on 0777 5995179.
More services and activities which can help with improving your health are Health walks, Baby massage/Living with baby, Splash and Swimming and many more!
Group aims
The group which has now been running for a number of weeks has proved very popular with parents. SureStart Grantham and Home Start have five sets of twins attending and one set of triplets. The parents find it very useful having a place which is large enough for everyone. Marie, of Hudson Way, Grantham, said the hardest thing is taking the twins out. She said: ‘my best friend has triplets and we cannot go anywhere for lunch because nowhere have enough high chairs for them all!’Group co-ordinators also organise visits by health visitors to talk to the parents and give advice.
Improving the ability to learn
It takes a lot of time and patience to care for one baby, but caring for twins means ‘double the trouble!’ That’s why SureStart Grantham and Home Start have established a support group for parents who have experienced multiple births.
Multiple Madness
More services and activities which can help with improving the ability to learn are Parent & Toddler Sessions, Mobile library, Joe Jingles and many more! For more information please phone 01476 590034.
Meeting times
The group meets every Wednesday from 1pm until 3pm at the Harrowby SureStart Centre, Belton Lane Primary School. For more information contact Sarah High at Home Start (Tel: 01476 592925) or Sara Partridge at SureStart Grantham (Tel: 01476 407443).

Local parents overjoyed as SureStart Grantham’s float wins prize at Grantham Carnival!
SureStart Grantham parents and staff worked extremely hard in the 12 weeks running up to the Carnival weekend by making scenery and costumes for their Peter Pan themed float.SureStart parents and staff under took a whole range of preparation from a visit to Skegness recycling centre, to see what useful ‘props’ could be picked up for use on either the float or for costumes, to the parents ‘polishing up’ on their needle work skills!Thoughts for next years Grantham Carnival are with SureStart families already - the theme being ‘Holidays!’ With the help of SureStart Grantham families and staff next year we are determined to gain that extra point plus one or
two more and come back with first place!
A big thank you to all who helped in any way, without the help of all of
you, no matter how much time you gave; we could not have achieved this result without you all!
CONGRATULATIONS AND WELL DONE!!!
SureStart Grantham entered the Grantham Carnival float contest for the very first time this year on Saturday 18th June...and gained second place in the non commercial section
narrowly missing first place by one point!

She has been working as a health visitor for the past 5 years. Josie will be looking at health promotion and focusing on prevention rather that cures. Josie said, ‘I gain the most job satisfaction when promoting positive health!’
Jayne Kappen is the new Community Family Worker. Jayne will
be running the Positive Parent Groups and will act as first point of contact for families requesting additional support.
The team at SureStart Grantham wish them a very ‘warm welcome.’
Children’s Centre Build’s Update
Jayne Kappen
Earlesfield
The planned SureStart Children’s Centre build on Swingbridge Road received planning permission in July 2005. However an alternative option to the above build is being considered. The alternative option being investigated is to build onto the existing rented SureStart Annex and also converting existing classrooms and building onto Spitalgate School.
Both these options were explored at the outset of the planned build, however building onto the existing Annex on its own would not provide sufficient space, and there were restrictive conditions to building onto Spitalgate School, which have now been withdrawn. A decision is likely to be made in autumn.
Harrowby
After having approval and funding confirmed by the SureStart Unit, work has started and is progressing. Total funding for the project is £854,550 it’s broken down as follows; £404,500 from SureStart Grantham Capital, £400,000 from Lincolnshire County Council Children’s Centre funding, and £50,000 from the Library Service funding.
The first phase is in the completion of the refurbishment of the existing wing from which early education and childcare will be provided; this is due for completion by September 2005. The second phase is the completion of the new build. This is due for completion in February 2006.
