Classrooms are respectful environments and children are engaged in their learning. Visitors to the school and relieving teachers often remark that the children are polite, cheerful and on task. Children are not perfect and sometimes make choices that they later regret. At school we have a behaviour management procedure that provides a framework to deal with any issues to do with student behaviour. Each issue is thoroughly investigated and the best course of action is determined. All children are entitled to the principle of “natural justice” This basically means that they have the right to be treated fairly. We are fortunate that behavioural issues are few and far between. I have a behaviour book where incidents are recorded. Since the beginning of 2014 the number of recordings in this book have dropped from 40 (on average one a week), 20 in 2015 and 5 so far in 2016. The role of board members is to govern the school, not manage the school, this is the role of the Principal. So any issues about the day to day running of the school need to be directed to me not board members. It is extremely difficult to solve concerns if they are not known to myself or other members of staff! All our staff are receptive to parents and are willing listeners. Often problems can be solved with direct communication. Perceived problems that are not communicated often fester and become larger than they need to be. This Friday, teachers from school will be attending a union meeting in Ashburton. Because of this meeting, there will only be myself and teacher aides left at school so we are having a working bee in the afternoon, beginning at 1:15pm. The last working bee was a great success and a lot was achieved. We welcome parents to come along and help the children with odd jobs around the school. Buses will still run at the same time at 2:45pm. Back up Ski Day Because one Friday the mountain was closed, the backup ski day will be Friday 16 th September. This day does clash with Swim week. Also please note that there will be no ski school classes on the 9 th September due to the teacher union meeting. Swim Week Next week is Swim week. Please can you return the permission slips and pay the swimming invoice by this Friday. Thank you to those parents that have volunteered to take transport. Due to a lack of swimming instructors the children have been put into 3 time slots, the first one beginning at 12:45pm. Religious Education Survey Thank you the parents that have returned the Religious Education survey. Please can any others be returned to school by this Friday. End of Term Interviews For some children in Years 1-3 they are due interviews at the end of this term. They will be held on Monday 19 th September. Your child’s teacher will contact you with a suitable time. Kind Regards Richard Kidd

Mayfield School Newsletter 7th September 2016

Dear Parents and Community members,

Tena kautou katoa, At Mayfield School we work hard on developing a positive school culture. SCHOOL EVENTS

Science Activity Day

Science has been a focus for the school this year and last Monday we were fortunate to have Science

Advisor Warren Bruce come to school and work with the children on different scientific learning

experiences. Children were split in to their house groups and moved around classes, where each teacher

including Mr Bruce carried out a science lesson. It was fantastic to observe the depth of scientific thinking

and questioning occurring in each class and the fun the children had.

On our school Facebook page there are some wonderful pictures of the day.

Mini Olympics

Last Thursday we held the mini Olympics. This was organised by the children in Room One. One of the

strategic aims of the school is to develop leadership in our students and the senior students certainly

demonstrated this through by organizing the events, the timetable, making flags, medals and even an

Olympic torch. One of the strengths of a small school is the ability and opportunity for children to interact

with children of different ages- it was great to see the older children encouraging and directing the younger

ones on the various activities.

Futsal

Recently we had two futsal teams compete in mini tournament at the EA Network Centre. They also

received training from the NZ futsal team. Thanks to the children and the parents who gave up some

of their Sunday to assist. As always the Mayfield children demonstrated commitment and

sportsmanship.

SCHOOL LAWN MOWING At the latest board meeting the board has decided to split the position of Gardener. The gardening component will be looked after by a dedicated group of parents. However, the school still needs somebody who would consider mowing the school grounds. Please contact Richard at [email protected] if you are interested in this position.

Preschoolers for 2017 and beyond To help with planning of classes in 2017 and beyond it would be great if you indicate on the form below if you have a preschooler who is going to begin school in the next 1-2 years and return it to school.
