Geography

• Russia covers about 1/8 of the earths surface.

• Russia has 11 time zones.

• Russia’s mountain range is the border of Europe and Asia.

• Lake Baikal in Russia is one of the oldest and deepest lakes of the world.

• Russia has the largest plain on earth, called the Siberian Plain.

• The Neva River in St. Petersburg is the shortest and deepest European River.

• The lowest point is the Caspian Sea.

• The highest Point is Elbrus Mountain.

• Moscow is the Capital or Russia. Moscow is over 850 years old.

School

• Russia has the highest literacy rate in the world.

• In schools, the teachers are strict.• Students are told what the answer is, not why

the answer is what it is. The teacher wont say “how did you get that answer?”. It’s either right or wrong.

At home

• Unlike work and in public where they are a whole different person, at home they are relaxed, secure, and speak of what's on their minds.

• Hand shaking in Russia is a big sign of respect. • Also, in the Russian language, it takes 10%

longer to say something than in English.

About Russia

• The population is about 145 million people.

• They speak their native language, Russian.

• 80% of the population lives in the West.

• 11 million people live in Moscow.

• Music and art is important to their culture.

• The religion is mostly Orthodox.

• There are also others:

• Islam

• Catholicism

• Protestantism

• and Judaism

Drinking

• There are several exceptions for drinking alcohol in Russia.

• At any age, kids can drink vodka as it is their national beverage.

• 18 is the age to buy or drink 22% or less.• 21 is the age to buy or drink 22% or more.• However, there are certain salesmen that sell

alcohol to underage kids.

Food

• Popular Main Courses: Omelets, Meats

• Soups: Fish soup, Chicken soup, mushroom soup, noodle soup, cold soup.

• Appetizers: sheep skin, salmon, beef.

• Dessert: Pancakes, pastries.

• Beverages: Vodka, beer, Samgon, Kompot.

Independence

• Russia became an independent country on June 12th, 1991.

• On this day, the Russians spend their time in their “dachas”, away home.

• It’s where they plant things and relax.

Age of Absolutism

• Russia, Prussia, Britain, France, and Austria were all together as a strong monarchy.

• They wanted to be a powerful nation.
