    Facilities and resources

    LibrariesAs well as the Schools own well-stocked lawlibrary, Old College also houses the libraryof the Europa Institute, an outstandingEuropean Documentation Centre holding anextensive collection of legal, criminologicaland European materials. Postgraduates haveaccess to all University libraries including theMain Library, which has one of the largestand most important collections in Britain,

    and they can also use the National Libraryof Scotland a national facility located ashort walk from Old College.

    IT supportExtensive computing facilities are providedfor all our postgraduate students. Wemaintain a number of computer labs, oneof which is reserved for the exclusive useof postgraduate students, and wirelessnetwork access is available throughoutthe School. Postgraduate students haveextensive, free access to online legal

    research facilities, including LexisNexis,Westlawand electronic journals. Additionalcomputing facilities are available in theUniversitys Main Library, where a laptoploan system is also provided.

    Moot Court RoomThe School is proud to boast a new MootCourt Room, which is installed with allthe latest IT and audio facilities, givingall students who participate in mootingcompetitions and exercises a avourof practice in a real court situation.

    EventsThe School and its research centresorganise regular events, including seminarand lecture series, conferences, researchtraining, workshops and fairs. We stronglyencourage all our postgraduate studentsto attend these events and get involvedin their organisation.

    Collections of the UniversityThe Universitys collections are uniquein their depth and diversity.     On-campus taught masters programmes

    We offer one of the widest ranges of legal mastersprogrammes in the UK. All our programmes can be

    taken either full time or part time* and offer youthe opportunity either to specialise or to pursuea broader perspective on law. We offer more than70 optional courses (see page 15), ensuring youmaximum exibility to design a programme ofstudy that suits your desired career path.

    Both compulsory and optional courses on our mastersprogrammes are taught in a seminar style, with no classexceeding 25 students. Most of our programmes are assessedthrough written assignment and all have a dissertationcomponent, written on a topic of your choice with support

    and guidance from the Programme Director.

    We offer 16 taught on-campus masters programmes butare always looking to develop new opportunities for ourpostgraduate community.     Commercial Law

    LLM 1 yr FT (2 yrs PT available for UK/EU students)

    Programme descriptionThis programme provides advanced learning in key areas of internationalcommercial law. You will also study law in its commercial and practicalcontexts. All our core commercial law lecturers are fully qualiedsolicitors, and youll also be taught by full-time legal practitioners(Scottish and English). The Edinburgh Centre for Commercial Law plays acentral role to the programme, and runs a Commercial Law seminar seriesthat attracts leading commercial lawyers from the UK and further aeld.

    Programme structureYou will be required to complete 180 credits of study: this includesa 10,000-word supervised dissertation to be submitted at the end ofyour studies (60 credits). The remaining 120 credits must be made upfrom taught LLM courses. You must take a minimum of 80 credits fromCommercial Law courses, while the remaining 40 credits can be choseneither from this same list or from the Schools other MSc and LLMprogrammes.

    Programme descriptionThis programme builds on Edinburgh Law Schools considerable strengthin these elds and provides a course of study that is unique in theEnglish-speaking world. You will have the opportunity to examine theprinciples on which the laws of major jurisdictions are based, both inthe civilian tradition and the common-law world, along with currentharmonisation attempts.

    Courses are taught by leading experts in their elds, building onScotlands unrivalled position as Europes main mixed jurisdiction andEdinburgh Law Schools distinguished tradition as a seat of learning.The various units on offer cover the main areas of the law of obligations(contract, delict/tort, unjustied enrichment) and the law of property(including trusts).

    Programme structureYou must complete a total of 180 credits, including a 10,000-wordsupervised dissertation, worth 60 credits. Of the remaining 120 credits,at least 80 must be taken from the core courses listed below. Theremaining 40 credits may be selected from the optional courses listed.You must take 60 credits in each semester.

    Competition Lawand InnovationLLM 1 yr FT (2 yrs PT available for UK/EU students)

    Programme descriptionThis programme aims to provide cutting-edge knowledge of the rules oncompetition and on the control of mergers. It will especially enable youto appreciate the complex interaction with other, equally relevant, rulesgoverning the protection of intellectual property and appropriate casesof public interest, such as the plurality of the media and the circulationof information.

    Programme structureYou must complete a total of 180 credits, including a 10,000-wordsupervised dissertation, worth 60 credits. The remaining 120 credits(60 credits per semester) will be divided as illustrated below.

    SEMESTER 1

    You will take a compulsory course such as Principles of CompetitionLaw for Innovation(20 credits, prior knowledge of competition lawis required) or EU Competition Law(40 credits, no prior knowledgeof competition law is required).

    You will also take 20 credits worth of courses, from the followingoptions:Intellectual Property 1: Copyright and Related Rights ; LegalChallenges of Information Technology; or any other 20-credit optionalLLM course (see page 15).

    Programme descriptionThis innovative programme aims to transcend a narrow focus on legalrules and situate the study of corporate law in a wider interdisciplinaryand comparative framework. It is designed to ensure that you will developyour knowledge and skills along three dimensions: UK company law;comparative and international aspects of corporate law; and economicand nancial aspects of corporate law. The programme responds to theincreasing market demand for versatile corporate lawyers by offeringa unique portfolio of courses that will allow you to acquire in-depthknowledge of legal, economic, nancial and comparative matters,covering the entire life cycle of a corporation.

    Programme structureYou must complete a total of 180 credits, including a 10,000-word

    Programme descriptionThis programme provides an in-depth study of the fundamentals ofinternational law and international relations, with the opportunity to takespecialised courses on issues of contemporary signicance.     PhDThe degree of PhD can be undertaken in any of the core areasof research activity covered by Edinburgh Law School. PhDs areawarded to an original piece of work that makes a signicantcontribution to knowledge in the eld of study and containsmaterial worthy of publication.

    If you undertake a PhD with us you will be assisted by theappointment of two academic supervisors, a principal supervisorand an assistant supervisor. Supervisors are carefully chosento provide you with the best possible support to develop yourthesis. They will also help you identify specic requirements,such as empirical methods or language training.

    You will also be assisted by a comprehensive programme ofsupport and training. Doctoral training has two strands: a formalprogramme of classes and events, and a range of informalopportunities that the School encourages and facilitates, suchas self-led student reading groups and the organisation of PhDconferences and other events to build PhD networks. A PhD

    steering committee is elected each year to work closely withstaff and candidates and to develop informal opportunitiesand other initiatives to foster a dynamic research environment.

    The PhD programme offers structured legal research courses inthe rst year of study, alongside more specic training as needed,depending on your project requirements. The focus of the secondyear is on supporting the external dissemination of work. In thirdyear all students participate in our Graduate Student Seminar Series.

    Candidates for the doctoral research degree submit a thesis,which is examined orally by an external examiner, who is anexpert in the subject, and also by an internal examiner. Themaximum permitted length of a PhD thesis is 100,000 words.

    Masters by ResearchWe believe its important to foster a strong research ethosat all stages of an educational career.     Programme descriptionYou will consolidate and build on legal research and writing skillsacquired through undergraduate legal studies by planning andcompleting a 30,000-word dissertation, working independently butunder specialist academic supervision, within your chosen eld of law.

    The programme will enhance and develop your ability to manageand engage with both primary legal sources and academic literatureon your chosen topic, present critical and engaged legal arguments,

    and maintain the coherence of those arguments over a substantialpiece of written work.

    Programme structureThe framework of the LLM by Research allows you time and intellectualspace to work in your chosen eld, and to rene and develop this initialphase of the project for future doctoral work.

    As the programme does not have formal coursework elements, theLLM by Research is a particularly attractive option for those wishing toundertake postgraduate research on a part-time basis, while pursuinglegal practice or other employment.

    Programme descriptionThe LLM in Legal Research is an innovative programme preparing you toundertake high-quality doctoral research in one of the UKs leading lawschools. It provides the bridge between undergraduate studies in lawand doctoral work.

    The programme is designed to simultaneously offer you the opportunityto undertake more in-depth, guided study in an area in which you mayplan to specialise in the future; understand the basics of legal research,legal scholarship and research methods; and undertake a piece ofsupervised, independent research, involving practice in using research-methods skills, leading to a dissertation. This LLM is suitable for s tudentswanting to specialise in any eld of legal studies in which we havesupervisory expertise.

    Programme structureCourses are taught by seminar and assessment is primarily by essays.You will be expected to prepare by reading the required materials andby reecting on the issues to be discussed. You are required to complete180 credits of study, which are broken down as follows:
