    Facilities and resources

    The Moray House Library is located in theDalhousie Land building, set within theHolyrood campus (see page 24 for map)making it immediately accessible during abusy day. The library excels in the literatureof education, psychology, English language

    teaching, physical education, sportssciences, leisure studies and recreationalmanagement, and offers a collection ofchildrens literature for nursery through tosecondary school level, of particular valueto students on education courses for useduring school placements. The range ofbooks, journals, maps and electronic/audio-visual data available is vast, and thereare staff on hand to advise you in yoursearch and aid access. The library itselfoffers Mac and PC terminals throughout theoors. There are also study rooms for singleand group study, which can all be booked.

    Education postgraduates have full accessto all the Universitys wider library andSpecial Collection resources. Mac and PClabs are found across the various campusesin the city and allow access to all Universitystudents many 24 hours a day.

    The Schools Research and KnowledgeExchange Ofce exists to support thedevelopment, delivery and disseminationof research and knowledge-exchangeactivities. This service is open to research

    postgraduates and it will support youfor funding applications, conferencesand seminars.

    Fitness for purposeFor our sports science and sport andexercise cohort, our facilities areoutstanding. We have a six-lane, 25-metrepool within the Moray House campus(see page 24), at St Leonards Land. Thepool has a movable oor for any depthof use, six underwater cameras with fullyautomated control, 1,000 lux of lightingand digital video for analysis. We have aportable 3D camera system which allowsexibility of use in other pools, for exampleat the Royal Commonwealth Pool, minuteswalk from Holyrood and available toUniversity of Edinburgh postgraduates.

    Moray House offers excellent library, computing and studyfacilities, with everything you need for your training or

    research in education, including fully equipped classrooms.For sports-related study, facilities both within the Schoolof Education and at the Universitys Centre for Sportand Exercise are second to none.

    Moray House works closely with theUniversitys Centre for Sport and Exercise,which not only attracts world-leadingathletes (the Centre served as a 2012Olympic training facility) but also offersexible use of world-class facilities. The

    Centre for Sport and Exercise has recentlyundergone a 4.8 million investment in itstness and indoor facilities, which extendto state-of-the-art cardiovascular, bodycircuit, body conditioning, free weightsand resistance training gyms; sports halls;dance studios; squash courts; climbingand bouldering facilities; as well asfacilities for rowing, boxing, rie shootingand archery. An indoor cycling facilitycompletes the package.

    The Centres Fitness Assessment and SportsInjury Clinic (FASIC) has recently expandedand is now well established as one of thelargest and most accomplished providers ofsports medicine in the UK. FASIC providesthe full spectrum of medical support toathletes in the SportScotland Institute ofSport and the British Olympic Association.

    To the south of the city centre, theUniversitys Peffermill playing eldscomprise two oodlit water-basedarticial training pitches (internationallyaccredited), a superb new 3G development(120m x 80m) approved for football (to FIFA

    1* standard) and rugby (to IRB 22 standard),three ve-a-side pitches, 12 grass pitches forfootball, rugby and lacrosse, a 100-metresynthetic training track and cricket andtennis provision. Peffermill is the designatedNational Hockey Academy for Scotland andis one of the best training and competitionvenues for hockey in Europe. It is beingpromoted for National Teams lookingfor preparation facilities ahead of theCommonwealth Games 2014 in Glasgow.

    The University also boasts a residentialoutdoor centre in the southern Highlandsof Scotland, which is superbly appointedand offers a broad range of water sports,mountain sports and winter sports. It canalso make a good retreat for a group studyor reading week.

    All postgraduate students are membersof the Moray House School of EducationGraduate School. The Graduate School, atThomsons Land on the Holyrood campus,is the rst point of contact for every newmember of our international postgraduatecommunity. Here you can ask questions

    of administrative staff and use computingfacilities. We hope that very quickly youwill feel at home in the Graduate Schooland will benet from the close contactwith fellow students, researchers and staff.

    Regular seminars and events helppromote a stimulating environment forour postgraduate students and staf f alike.Also on the Holyrood campus, within the

    spectacular setting of Patersons Land,there are two new student common roomsand the large Chapters caf-restaurant.

    Our Institute for Education, Community& Society runs public research seminarsthroughout the year. These include seriessuch as Child Development in Education,Education Policy and Devolution and theRobertson Bequest lectures on education.

    Similarly our Institute for Sport, PhysicalEducation & Health Sciences runs publicresearch seminars throughout the yearwithin its spring and autumn seminar series.

    Our Developmental Physical EducationGroup runs physical education conferences,courses and workshops designed for earlyyears educators, teachers, physicaleducationalists and sport specialistswho are interested in learning aboutand enhancing the teaching of physicaleducation, physical activity and sport foryoung childrens health and wellbeing.

    Community

    The School of Education has around 1,000 postgraduatestudents on a wide range of taught and research

    programmes. The Graduate School was establishedto provide a focus for postgraduate education andto represent the needs of our postgraduate students.

    Recently the international Leisure, Living,Learning: Education in Sport, Tourism andthe Outdoors annual conference of theLeisure Studies Association was hosted inthe School. This international assemblyof academics, advocates, students,policymakers and practitioners in

    recreation, sport, tourism and outdooreducation gathered to address leisureand global citizenship, and offered anideal networking and learning opportunityfor our postgraduates and our widerresearch community.

    The School community isnt limited toEdinburgh, or even the UK. A recentUNESCO project saw staff from MorayHouse get involved in connecting Araband European cultures through a desertjourney to learn about values, culturesand cultural misunderstandings. The

    project will build on research gathered yearon year and offers a wealth of opportunitiesfor prospective postgraduates interestedin this area of education.

    Moray House School of Education offers a exiblemenu of taught postgraduate programmes,

    including the PGDE teaching qualication,continuing professional development courses,and a full range of masters degrees.

    PGDEFor graduates wishing to enter the teaching profession in Scotland,at either primary or secondary level, we offer the ProfessionalGraduate Diploma in Education. The one-year programme is theScottish route to qualied teacher status. We aim to producesuccessful, reective teachers, sensitive to the demands ofpupils, responsive to changes within the education system andcommitted to their own continuing professional development.

    Additional Support for LearningOur Additional Support for Learning programmes are designedto meet the needs of practising teachers and other professionals.All the programmes courses are studied part time, and you canselect individual courses for your CPD needs, complete threecourses for a Postgraduate Certicate, or complete six coursesfor a Postgraduate Diploma. There is also the option to completea Master of Education degree, for which you must also producean independently researched dissertation.

    MSc, MEd, PgDip and PgCertWe have a generous menu of postgraduate degree programmesfocusing on diverse aspects of both education and sports science.Many are offered as MSc or MEd degrees with the option offollowing part of the masters programme to qualify with a PgCertor PgDip.     Programme descriptionThis programme aims to build on your existing knowledge and experienceto take you to the level of specialist in the education of deaf childrenand young people. Whatever the context special schools, units withinmainstream settings and peripatetic support services you will developthe critical understanding necessary to interpret the differentconstructions of deafness, and use audiological information and languageassessments to devise the appropriate support for deaf children. Youllbuild your collaborative skills, and examine the use and potential of

    both spoken and sign language in strategies for deaf education.

    Programme descriptionWhile this programme has been designed primarily for educationalprofessionals working with people with learning disabilities, you mayalso nd it valuable as a worker in an allied profession. Working alongsideother professional groups, youll examine the different presentationsof challenging behaviour, and develop a clear denition of learningdisability, incorporating the associated cognitive capacities and needsof clients. Youll build on your collaborative working skills, and explorecompeting inuences, such as disability, gender, race and ethnicity.

    Programme structureYour learning will be in the form of lectures, seminars, small-groupdiscussions and skill-development sessions. Most courses are of feredin e-learning or blended learning format, combining on-campus andonline study.

    COMPULSORY COURSES
