The Principal of New College, ProfessorDavid Fergusson, was principal investigatorfor an AHRC/ESRC-funded project onChristianity, psychotherapy and spiritualityin Scotland. He served as President of theSociety for the Study of Theology until2002, was Chair of the UK Associationof University Departments of Theology

and Religious Studies until 2008 andis a former Gifford Lecturer.

Theology has been taught at Edinburgh since the foundationof the University in 1583. Dr Helen Bond, Director of the SchoolsCentre for the Study of Christian Origins, isa distinguished historian of the period of theNew Testament writings. In addition to heracademic publications, Dr Bond is active inmediating scholarship more widely throughher work for BBC Radio 3 and 4, and hascontributed to a number of televisionprogrammes for the BBC and Channel 4.

Professor Jolyon Mitchell brings together

expertise in media, arts and religion asDirector of the Centre for Theology andPublic Issues. He was the only Britishmember of the International StudyCommission on Media, Religion & Culture,which consisted of 13 scholars from nationsas diverse as Australia, Colombia, Ghana,Italy, Mexico, Thailand and the United States.

Professor Brian Stanley, a leading interpreterof the past centurys shifting patterns in theglobal diffusion of Christianity, is Professorof World Christianity and the Director of the

Facilities and resources

The School of Divinity has its own unique library,dining and socialising areas, and a strong sense of

community between students and staff, as wellas being part of a large, world-class university.

We take a personal interest in ourstudents and offer a welcoming andfriendly setting in which to pursue theexciting and demanding study of theologyand religious studies.

New College Library has one of the largesttheology collections in the UK, with morethan a quarter of a million items and a largeand rich manuscript collection, includingthe papers of Thomas Chalmers, JohnBaillie, JH Oldham and James S Stewart.

The strengths of the Library collectionscontribute greatly to the teaching andresearch of members of the School as wellas students elsewhere in the University.These collections are complemented by themany resources available in the Universityand beyond. The total holdings in all theUniversity libraries exceed 2.25 millionvolumes. In addition, the National Library

of Scotland holds more than ve millionvolumes. The New College Library boastsa magnicent reading hall, originally built

as the sanctuary of the Free High Kirk.

The School provides extensive andwell-equipped computing facilities forresearch and coursework at all levels,including dissertations. We provide allstudents with PCs, scanners and printers,across four labs.

The Tower Lab and Mason Room Lab arefor the use of any registered student while

Prograe descriptionFinely honed skills in biblical languages are central to thisprogrammes engagement with the Bible, the world that producedit and its later readers. The programme will provide you with expert,in-depth study of the Hebrew Bible and New Testaments, the wider,ancient Near East, and related extra-biblical literature, includingthe Dead Sea Scrolls and the scholarly methods for studying them.

You will be taught by leading academics whose research interestsare in the elds of Hebrew Bible, Old Testament, New Testament,

early Judaism and early Christianity. You will benet from weeklyseminars from senior specialists in biblical studies and relatedsubjects, and the Schools Centre for the Study of Christian Origins.

Prograe structureThe programme runs over one year (or two years if part time).You will be taught mainly in small groups in a classroom/seminarsetting. You will receive training in research methods and will beindividually supervised for your 15,000-word dissertation.

COmPULSORY COURSES

The core components of this degree comprise two biblicallanguage/reading courses, in Greek or Hebrew/Aramaic. Thereare a number of possible scenarios for language study and

We offer six taught masters programmes,most of which can be taken either as a Master

of Theology (MTh) or a Master of Science (MSc),the difference being one of nomenclature only.

Our taught masters programmes are designed to deepenknowledge in a subject you will typically have studied atundergraduate level, although they can in some cases offera new direction in your academic career.

Taught masters programmes take 12 months, consisting of twosemesters of taught courses followed by an individual, superviseddissertation. They can also be studied part time over two years.

Understanding theirmotivations and structures can help the search for solutions to majorchallenges in the contemporary world. This programme allows adeepening engagement with the methodological ramications

of the eld, while encouraging in-depth study of one or morereligious traditions. Our focus extends beyond theory and method inreligious studies to specic local, national and international religious

Prograe descriptionMuch of the recent debate surrounding New Atheism has takenplace within a poorly informed view of the history and philosophyof science and its relationship with religion. This programme aimsto inform and engage with the debate in depth, looking at itfrom scientic, philosophical, historical, ethical and theological

perspectives. It provides a strong grounding in these issues.The history of science is studied from ancient times through themodern scientic revolution, together with philosophical trends in

our understanding of reality. The main areas of dialogue betweenscience and religion are explored in depth, including cosmology,evolution, divine action and miracles, consciousness and the

Theology in History


Prograe descriptionThis exible programme looks at the Christian past from a variety

of perspectives theological, philosophical and historical andprovides options for special study of themes from the early Churchto modern times. Our aim is to enable you to understand and reect

critically upon the historical contexts in which Christian thought hasdeveloped. Our approach is interdisciplinary: instructors includehistorians, philosophers of religion and systematic theologians. Ourwork is enriched by the Schools guest lectures and regular researchseminars in theology and ethics, and the history of Christianity.

Prograe structureThis programme is run over one year full time (or two years parttime). From September to April you follow courses and are giventraining in research methods. From April onwards you will workon your 15,000-word dissertation. All students have one-to-onedissertation supervision.

COmPULSORY COURSES

The compulsory courses (Creeds, Councils and Controversies Iand II) focus on the most authoritative ecclesiastical constructionsof Christian thought, from the beginnings to the present day,and explore the debates and challenges that have shaped beliefand practice. Students also take Approaches to Research, whichoffers a practical approach to improving postgraduate-levelskills of critical thinking and writing.

OPTIONAL COURSES

We offer a wide range of specialist options in early Christianity,late medieval religion, the Reformation and puritan studies,Scottish theology, German philosophy from Kant to Hegel,modern religious history, and the theology of gures such as

Friedrich Schleiermacher and Karl Barth. You may choose at leasttwo of three options from the Theology in History offerings, butyou are also able to take a course from elsewhere within theSchool or College. You may opt to take a year-long course inan ancient or modern language relevant to your dissertation.

Career opportunitiesThe programme can be taken as an end in itself or as preparation

for a research degree and provides transferable skills that can beapplied in a wide range of careers.

World Christianity


Prograe descriptionWith more than 2.2 billion followers, and as one of the oldestreligions, Christianity plays an important role in inuencing a

wide range of social, political and cultural issues.

This programme interprets some of the key themes and trendsin Christianity in the majority world, or southern hemisphere,and is designed to provide expert insight, knowledge and skills tounderstand the wide range of Christian belief, culture and practicethroughout the world, particularly in Africa, Latin America and Asia.It is taught in a strongly interdisciplinary way, and employs historical,sociological, anthropological and theological perspectives. You willenjoy a unique framework to study, research and understand thecomplexity of Christian communities in the world and their widersignicance for culture and society.

Prograe structureThis masters programme is run over one year full time (or twoyears part time). You will be taught mainly in small groups in aclassroom/seminar setting. You will receive individual supervisionfor your 15,000-word dissertation.

COmPULSORY COURSES

The compulsory courses Concepts and Methods in the Study ofWorld ChristianityandSelected Themes in the Study of WorldChristianityattend to methods for the study of indigenous formsand expressions of Christianity, to issues of culture and gender

and to changing patterns of relationship between Christianity inthe west and other parts of the world. Approaches to Researchin Divinity and Religious Studiesdevelops postgraduate-levelskills in critical thinking and writing.

OPTIONAL COURSES

You will choose three courses, at least two of which must bepostgraduate courses offered by the School of Divinity. Optionalcourses offered by the Centre of World Christianity include:Christian History in Asia; Christian Theology in Asia; CriticalDebates in Christian Mission; and History of Christianity in Africa.You can also choose an undergraduate course offered by theSchool or, at the discretion of the Programme Director, a course

Centre for the Study of Christian OriginsEstablished to promote research on theemergence of, and developments in,Christianity in the rst three centuries of

the Common Era, the Centre for the Studyof Christian Origins has brought togetherresearchers in the University of Edinburghand beyond.

The Centre bridges the study of the NewTestament and earliest Christianity andprovides a means of linking interestedscholars in several traditional disciplines,such as New Testament/Christian origins,patristics, Roman history, archaeology,Second-Temple Judaism and palaeography.The Centre organises a variety of lectures,seminars and conferences.

Research opportunities

masters by ResearchThese one-year masters degrees byresearch are designed for studentswith an academic training in divinityor religious studies (or other relevantsubjects) who wish to focus on aparticular topic. The programme maybe taken as either a Master of Theologyby Research or a Master of Science byResearch. The difference is one ofnomenclature only. Both involve research

training and orientation courses, afterwhich you may either research andsubmit a dissertation of about 30,000words, which comprises the remainingassessment for the degree, or take threefurther courses to provide appropriatebackground and preparatory study for thetopic of your research, and then submita dissertation of about 15,000 words.

master of Philosophy (mPhil)The MPhil requires a minimum of two yearsfull-time study. You will be provided withtwo supervisors. During the rst year you

will explore your chosen area of researchand rene your proposal. After nine to12 months a draft of a chapter or a part-chapter will be submitted for discussion ata Review Board, together with a developedproposal for the whole thesis (of no morethan 50,000 words). On the basis of

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)Research towards a PhD requires aminimum of three years full-time workunder the guidance of two supervisors.

For PhD study we look for a proven abilityto sustain independent research undersupervision, normally in the form of amasters degree involving a dissertation.Since in the British model of doctoralstudies there is little formal coursework,and the time available is limited to fouryears, we look for a substantial degreeof preparation in any necessary adjunctskills, including languages. Competence inacademic writing in English is also essential.

Progress during the rst year is assessed

by an end-of-year Review Board at whicha full, formal research proposal must bepresented, along with a sample of work.The Board will make a recommendationbased on its reading of your submissionand an interview. You then proceedwith your research, culminating inyour 100,000-word dissertation.

Research council awardsResearch councils offer awards to masters,MPhil and PhD students in most of theSchools within the University of Edinburgh.All studentship applications from theresearch councils must be made throughthe University, through your School orCollege ofce. Awards can be made forboth taught and research programmes.

Normally only those UK/EU studentswho have been resident in the UK for thepreceding three years are eligible for a fullaward. For some awards, candidates who
