Utopia: Place that is not.

Page 2: Persuasive Ppt

The Very First “Utopia”• “Utopia” By Thomas More• Combined Greek words ”ou” and

“topos”• More used this term to describe his

fictional island paradise. • Ever since people have used the

term “Utopia” to create their own version of the perfect state.

What Went Wrong ?• Every Utopia has several fundamental

flaws• Of those who have created different

versions of Utopia few were actually meant to be attempted.

• Many include magic trees that produce fruit all year round or lands where all human pleasures are mysteriously fulfilled. Making them obviously impossible to create in real life.

• However even those which where intended to be imitated still fall prey to these oversights.

Why Would They Fail?

– No one can control human emotions, or actions.

– You can’t make everyone happy.– The demands will always outweigh the

supply

The Abbey Of Theleme

• A hexagonal compound designed so those within could “do as thou wilt”

• Inhabitants were governed only by free will

• Origin of food, drinks, and supplies are unknown

• This leads many to believe that this compound could not exist without outside assistance.

Imitators

• People have used the enticing idea of the abbey to draw people in

• Cults founded on the belief that “do as thou wilt shall be the whole of the law”– Aleister Crowley– Sekhet Maat Lodge– Other satanic cults.

Aleister Crowley

• Many refer to Crowley as the “wickedest man on earth”

• Wrote “The Book of the Law”• Started the fist of many communes / cults

when he created the first imitation of the abbey

• A local commune located in down town Portland

• Uses the Ideals of Aleister Crowley and The Abbey Of Theleme to draw members in promising of a more fulfilling life governed by only their free will.

• In reality this organization temps people to join and then takes their money

• Considered by many to be a satanic cult.

In Conclusion

• It would be impossible to create a self sustaining utopia such as the abbey

• Human will cannot be trusted and the utopia would cease to be a utopia at all

• People tend to use the wants and wishes of others to gain wealth and power for themselves.

• Some things are better left to the imagination.
