From Our Pastor

Page 3 May 20, 2018

I want to call to everyone’s attention a very important organization that continues to be a great blessing to our parish and well beyond…the KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS. One need not look too hard to see or read about our own St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Knights of Columbus Council involved in a parish or community event. They sponsor our parish picnic, the Children’s Christmas Party and Easter Egg Hunt. They host Feast Day Dinners and our Lenten Soup Kitchen, lead Living Rosaries, and ensure that our First Friday Night Adorations are attended. They raise money for the Food for the Needy Program, Coats for

Kids, ACTS, Adults with Intellectual Disabilities, the Virginia Special Olympics and many other charitable events. But who are the Knights of Columbus? The Knights of Columbus organization was founded by an Irish-American Catholic priest, Venerable Michael J. McGivney, who saw what could happen to a family when the male wage earner died; therefore he wanted to be able to provide insurance benefits to the widows and children left behind.

The Knights of Columbus’ primary purpose it to support their parish. I am deeply grateful to have our Knights of Columbus Council here at SEAS. In fact, I became a Knight myself years before I was ordained a priest. As pastor, I know I can count on their support no matter how large or difficult the request is. But the Knights of Columbus is much more than a fraternity of men. Becoming a Knight of Columbus can transform one’s life. As a Knight, the men of our parish have the opportunity to give back to our community, grow in faith and gain access to a top-rated insurance program to protect their families.

Today I am calling on all men of our parish 18 years old or older to join our Knights of Columbus Council. Some men have already asked me how they can support the parish. Joining the Knights is a good response to that question. Many are no doubt involved in a variety of good organizations and activities, but regardless of their schedule or other commitments, nearly two million men around the world have found that the Knights of Columbus adds something significant to their lives. I encourage all men to please pick up the pamphlet in the narthex titled, “24 Hours Can Change Your Life”. It provides an illustration of just how much can be done as a Knight in 24 hours. There is also other information in the narthex about the Knights and who to contact about membership. Knights will also be in the narthex after all the Masses this weekend to answer any questions.

When you join the Knights, you will join a band of brothers and a network of men dedicated to doing good works in the service of God. I want to assure all current and future Knights of my deep gratitude and prayerful support. May God abundantly bless each of you, your families, and all those you serve. ~ Fr. Bashista

Weekly Reflection:

ALL ARE SENT

Fifty days after Easter Sunday we celebrate the fulfillment of all God’s promises in the feast of Pentecost, a feast that has sometimes been called the birthday of the church. One last time we are reminded that we Christians have received the Holy Spirit, not for our own benefit, but to enable us to follow our Christian vocation.

The centerpiece of the scriptures for Pentecost is the account in Acts of the Apostles of the sending of the Holy Spirit to the disciples. The other readings for this Sunday help us to understand what it means to live out our Christian vocation. Paul’s letter shows us the gifts and fruits that the Holy Spirit gives to us. John’s Gospel reminds us that Jesus has sent all his disciples to share his forgiveness and peace, through the power of the Holy Spirit. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Stewardship Reflection:

“There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone.” - 1 CORINTHIANS 12:4-6

All of us are blessed, regardless of our own individual circumstances; God has given each of us many gifts. How we use those gifts is our gift back to God. For God’s plan to work, each must do what we

are called to do and guess what – we are not all called to do the same thing!

Motive Entertainment has produced a new documentary film centered on Pope Francis, opening nationwide on May 18th, 2018. Co-produced by the Vatican's Office of Communications and directed by German filmmaker Wim Wenders, "Pope Francis - A Man of His Word" is a very personal journey with the Holy Father -- a film from him rather than about him, for non-Catholics as well as for Catholics -- in which he addresses the audience directly.

"I want to ask you a question. Answer in the silence of your hearts. How many

minutes or hours do I spend daily reading the Gospel or other parts of Sacred Scripture?" -- Pope Francis
