George Robert Twelve Hewes has become a known American Revolution hero, especially in this area. Who he was, where he was from and what he accomplished are fairly well known, even if some of the information is questionable. Some of this information, plus a little more, was shared by a relative, Mr. Horace Greeley Hewes of Braintree, Massachusetts. His letter was published in 1890 so that readers of The Richfield News might be made aware of the facts involved. Here is what he had to say: “To those who have ever taken time enough from the rush of the living to pass a quiet hour amid the hush of the dead, in the old church - a minute’s walk from the hotels - the following will be of interest. It will be remembered that in this old graveyard one of the ‘forefathers of the hamlet’ sleeps by the name of George R. T. Hewes, who, as his epitaph tells us, ‘helped drown the tea’ in the Boston harbor. I have before me a quotation from your journal which appeared in to-day’s Boston Sunday Herald, referring to my great-great grandfather, a member of the celebrated Boston Tea Party who is buried in the Presbyterian churchyard in your town. You state that the epitaph, on the head stone I presume, gives his age as 109 years and 2 months. This is a mistake. He was not quite 100 years of age when he died, tho’ it was, I acknowledge, generally

AN INTERESTING BIT OF BIOGRAPHYbelieved he was older. The records of the Old South Church in Boston where he was baptized by Dr. Prince, give the date of his christening as Sept. 26, 1742 so that tat the time of his demise, Nov. 5, 1840, he could not have been quite 100 years of age. He has numerous descendants in this vicinity and the name is closely associated with the history of Boston almost from its foundation, the original progenitor of the family having arrived here in 1633 on the Griffin - presumably from England or immediate vicinity as the ship sailed from that port. His name was Joshua and when the government was excavating for the cellar of the present post office, the workmen came across his head stone, which may now be see in the rooms of the Bostonian Society in the Old State House. He, with Winthrop and others, became interested in the iron industry and their foreman invented the scythe now used with its thin blade and bar back and also cut the dies for the ‘Pine Tree Shilling’. (The Pine Tree Shilling was America’s most famous colonial coin, issued when coinage from England was in short supply.) You will pardon this little bit of family history. I only meant to correct the mistake in regard to Mr. George Hewes’ age when I commenced.” Further descriptions of the gentleman say that he was the son of George and Abigail Sever

Hewes, perhaps the sixth of nine children, the fourth of seven sons. He was given his father’s first name and that of his mother’s uncle by the name of Twelve whom she had great respect for as part of his middle name. His father was a tanner who ended up in debtors’ prison more than once, dying at a young age. George R. was apprenticed as a shoemaker to a harsh master who did not take kindly to his steak of lively mischief which included, out of necessity, begging and stealing anything he could to eat. He finished his apprenticeship in 1763. Being only 5’1” he was too small to join the British army, although he tried. He struggled as a shoemaker, building a shop before he married at the age of twenty-six, Sarah Sumner (1748-1828, daughter of a poor church sexton. They were considered average members of Boston’s lower class. Despite his short stature, Hewes became an active participant in the Revolutionary events which, in turn, led to his service not only at what is referred to as the Boston Tea Party, but later entering the naval service of the colonies as a privateer. After the War of 1812, Hewes, his wife and four children, moved to this area where he continued to rely on his shoemaking trade to support his family. Although he never became wealthy, he was well respected in the community for his contribution to the cause of

the American Revolution being asked, as one of the last survivors of the Revolution, to participate in memorial ceremonies including the laying of the corner stone of the Bunker Hill monument in 1825. He was the only member to provide a first hand account of the Boston raid which was published in 1834. While family members, birth and death dates can be questionable, it is a fact that Hewes and wife were first buried in the Presbyterian Church ground on Church Street in Richfield Springs. They were re-interred on Memorial Day, 1896, in what was referred to as the Grand Army lot in Lake View Cemetery by officers and members of the

Weldon Post. This re-interment was found necessary in order to provide room for an extension on the Presbyterian Church In 1950 the Ganowanges Chapter D. A. R. placed a commemorative marker there as well, honoring the man of humble beginnings who became a man of distinction to a young nation.
