The beginning of the year is the time when gardeners and farmers start considering what they will plant for the coming season, doing so with high hopes of great crops to come. Whether you use the latest in improved varieties or stick to those that are centuries old is part of the pleasure of the experience. This hasn’t changed over the years nor has the right to show others the prized results and perhaps brag about them a little bit.On December 14, 1905, there was an article in the local Mercury describing a ‘corn contest’ which was of great local interest, with prizes offered by Mr. Caney, one of the local jewelers at the time. The contest itself was for the best example of corn grown from seed which Caney had given away to those interested the previous spring of that year. He had procured the seed from Wayne Clark, a well-known farmer of Schuyler Lake who had preserved the special variety for many years, even when other

A POPULAR CONTESTfarmers in the area had planted other kinds. Mr. Clark had always known the variety as the “Deacon Herkimer” corn as he had gotten the seed from Mr. Herkimer many years prior when he lived on the east side of the lake. The story continues with B. W. Lidell, well-known in the village, who remembered procuring the corn for planting on the old Lidell homestead from his uncle Allen Lidell who lived at Lidell’s Corners (the hamlet south of Schuyler Lake on the corner of County Route 16 and State Route 28). He had always known it as “King Phillip” corn, brought to this section from the New England states. Recognized by United States agriculturists prior to the Civil War, King Phillip corn had been grown and developed by the Wampanoag Native American community for centuries. Metacam, the Wampanoag sachem or leader, was known as King Phillip among the

Massachusetts Bay settlers and it was after him that the corn was named. Some history indicates that this variety was given to English settlers by the Wampanoag but it may also have been taken when Puritans seized and disposed of 1000 acres of corn during what was called the King Phillips’s War in 1675. This was the first Indian war or the Great Narragansett War which took place in southern New England for a year. It was the Native American’s last deliberate effort to stop English authority and settlement of their native lands. For years the growth of this seed provided the pioneers the sustenance needed in the wilderness. Traditionally the corn was used to make Indian meal fritters, corn dodgers and Indian pudding. Its ears ranged in color from dark yellow to a copper-red with two to four ears of about eleven inches each per stalk. Through the years this strain was ‘improved’ to produce longer ears of a

more uniform size. The winners of the 1905 contest were selected by Mr. Wayne Clark of Schuyler Lake. After much deliberation, the first prize was awarded to Nicholas VanDewerker of Warren; second place went to Frank O. Hyde, Richfield Springs; third place to Sanford Smith of Schuyler Lake. The prize corn was on exhibit at Caney’s store. Over one hundred entered the competition. It was Mr.
