LS BUDGETDISCUSSIONSTO CONTINUE The Lake Shore Central School District Board of Education discussed the 2012-2013 budget during its workshop meeting on March 6. Assistant Superinten-dent for Administration and Finance Daniel Pacos presented a draft copy of the proposed budget for consideration by the Board. The draft proposal, pre-pared by the members of the administrative team and budget committee, adheres to the New York State “tax cap” and includes reduc-tions in personnel, servic-es, supplies and materials and contractual services.
The District Budget Com-mittee and District Admin-istration recommended re-ductions from preliminary projections of staffing, ser-vices, supplies, programs and materials and endorsed entering into an efficiency program for energy con-sumption reductions. Fourteen District employ-ees opted to participate in a retirement incentive that will generate a cost savings of $533,890 in the coming school year, with five of these positions eliminated as a result of the retirement. In addition, tow elemen-tary teachers, five secondary full-time equivalent teach-ing positions, one personnel clerk and one groundskeeper position totaling $577,461 were removed from the proposed budget. Additional reduction rec-ommendations were made to reach the proposed tax levy, including: reducing the athletic program by -4.15 percent, reducing summer counseling work, publi-cations, fees, technology, professional development and technology. During the workshop ses-sion, Board members and administration discussed the impact of these cuts on educational programming and district operations. “We have tried to align staff cuts with enrollment trends. However, these are reductions that will impact educational programming for our students,” Mr. Pacos said. The Board is expected to adopt the 2012-2013 budget during the March 20 meet-ing. ________

LS FRESHMENEXAMINE TEENAGE STRESS The teenage years are tough, and many students find it hard to cope with all that is expected of them. Where some students learn how to manage their stress, others suffer from anxiety and depression. Students are learning that, if not ad-dressed, these conditions may lead to more stress and more serious physical, emotional and social issues. Specifically, students are learning the ways in which some people cope by exer-cising, sleeping and
eating well and taking time for themselves. At the same time, some people require counseling and prescrip-tion drugs. Students have learned and discussed the positives and negatives of prescription drugs and the dangers that come when people abuse them. Prescription drugs are quickly becoming the fast-est growing drugs being abused because of how readily available and acces-sible they are. Pictured are students, Alec Lezama, Tyler Lea-vit, Shauna Quinn, Kai-tlin Parker and Theresa O’Sullivan. ________

EVANS TIM HOR-TONSIS RATED #1 INCORPORATESTANDARDS The Town of Evans Tim Hortons, which recently celebrated its fifth anni-versary, has been rated number one in standards of cleanliness, hospitality and efficiency by the corporate headquarters for the second year in a row. The District Budget Committee and District Administration recom-mended reductions from preliminary projections of staffing, services, supplies, programs and materials and endorsed entering into an efficiency program for energy consumption reduc-tions. Fourteen District em-ployees opted to participate in a retirement incentive that will generate a cost savings of $533,890 in the coming school year, with five of these positions eliminated as a result of the retirement. In addition, tow elementary teachers, five secondary full-time equivalent teaching posi-tions, one personnel clerk and one groundskeeper position totaling $577,461 were removed from the proposed budget. Additional reduction recommendations were made to reach the proposed tax levy, including: reduc-ing the athletic program by -4.15 percent, reducing summer counseling work, publications, fees, technol-ogy, professional develop-ment and technology. During the workshop session, Board members and administration dis-cussed the impact of these cuts on educational pro-gramming and district op-erations. “We have tried to align staff cuts with enrollment trends. However, these are reductions that will impact educational programming for our students,” Mr. Pa-cos said. The Board is expected to adopt the 2012-2013 budget during the March 20 meeting. ________
