Our Speaker today AUGUST 6th is Janette Pelosi

Popular Entertainment in the Colony, 1828-1856

We tend to think the early days in the colony were all work and no play. Be surprised as archivist and historian Janette from State Records reveals the variety of entertainment your ancestors may have enjoyed.

Janette Pelosi has worked for over 25 years at State Records NSW where she has been a Senior Archivist and acting manager. Janette is a Professional member of the Australian Society of Archivists, and was the Convenor of the NSW Branch. She is also a Professional member of the Professional Historians Association and a Director of the Society of Australian Genealogists. Janette received a 2012 Mander Jones Award for her paper on theatrical archives and was the winner of Rockdale City Council’s Ron Rathbone Local History Prize 2008 for a history of the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Brigade. AUGUST 20th CCFHS SEMINAR

We welcome three distinguished speakers from the Royal Australian Historical Society for this special information gathering day.

Dr Carol Liston : Land Titles Records

Providing advice and guidance to assist researchers in accessing and using the historically significant records that Land and Property Information is making available though its SIX Portal. This is a two-hour session with a morning tea break.

Christine Yeats : Furnishing your Ancestors House Biographical and family history is much more than lists of names and genealogical charts. It is about getting to know the person by exploring their lives and considering when, where and how they lived. One of the ways you can do this is through research into their homes and possessions. Discover how your ancestors may have furnished their houses. A postcard image by W.E. Phegan, taken from the Royal Hotel in Mann Street, looking south [G. Dundon Collection]

CONGRATULATIONS to our Pam Williams !!! Pamela Williams and John Lewis, two enormously dedicated and incredibly patient researchers have taken it on themselves to document in detail the “when and where” of the buildings of Mann Street, the land owners and people who lived there or ran the businesses which were the lifeblood of the town in its formative years. Unprecedented in its scale and scope the reference book “Mann Street in the age of steam” helps to provide an accurate picture of the way that commerce and life developed along our Main thoroughfare. Through exhaustive and exhausting primary research, in land records, newspapers, directories, photographs,

council records and interviews with residents… the authors have pieced together much previously lost history of the Town. In a format that reflects “a long walk along Mann Street” from Mann Street South to Etna Street in the north, the books mirror the development of Gosford from an early collection of general stores, hotels and church centred around the wharf, to expansion north in the wake of the railway arriving in the 1880s, and consolidation in the years following the construction of the Pacific Highway in the 1930s. Mann Street, our “Main Street”, has finally been given the historical attention it deserves. “This reference book is tremendously important for the Town. In all my years in Libraries I

have never yet seen a treatment of a single street that is so comprehensive.” Geoffrey Potter,

Local Studies Librarian, Library & Community, Central Coast Council

From the National Library of Aust. New digitised newspapers

The latest newspaper titles now available on Trove are The Pictorial Australian(Adelaide, SA: 1885–1895), digitised through the Library's Australian Newspaper Plan, and The Broadcaster(Fairfield, NSW: 1935–1978), contributed by Holroyd City Council.

Why not try your hand at text correcting Melbourne’s first newspaper, The Melbourne Advertiser (Vic:1838), which began life as a handwritten newspaper, and once upon a time was included in the price of a counter meal at writer/publisher John Pascoe Fawkner’s pub.

e-Resource: overseas newspapers Did you know you can track your ancestors abroad using our expanding collection of historical overseas newspapers? Recently acquired titles include The Telegraph Historical Archive (1855–2000), and the latest installment of British Library Newspapers(Part V: 1746–1950).
