THEmother of an eight year old girlwho was allegedly raped and sodo-mised at the age of six by XolileTose (33) ofMotherwell is pleadingwith SouthAfricans to help her in-
nocent child face life again.
Tose is currently on trial in the Port Eliza-beth High Court. His bail application hadbeen denied. He has pleaded not guilty. The unemployed woman (30), who cannot
be identified to protect the identity of thechild, is struggling to survive since the ordealon 16 December 2011. She is currently rentinga shack in Motherwell. The told PE Express Indaba, that she needs
assistance to help her child live life to the full,
like any other child. The girl suffered severe physical injury to
her private parts and has to wear a colostomybagas a result of thehorrific rape.Hermothersaid the girl was also asked to leave the schoolshe was attending owing to the smell of thecolostomy bag.“This is an allegation theDepartment of Ed-
ucation refutes. But the child is not at school. The records show that she last attendedschool in March 2013,” said Children’s rightsadvocate Petros Majola.“We, the caring members of society need to
do something to restore this child’s child-hood. We need to find ways to get her a home, with sanitation, water, safety and most of alllove,” said the Justice Department’s Interme-diary, who spoke to PE Express as a mother, and a caring South African resident.
Tose allegedly raped the child at knife-point. Despite the presence of the intermedi-ary, the child was not able to testify in courtyesterday.“The child has not developed intellectually
and psychologically since the ordeal. She iseight but has the intelligence of a 5-year-old,”said clinical psychologistKarenJoyceAndrewson why the little rape victim could not testify.“We’re here to support the child. Harsh sen-
tences must be imposed on those who brutallyattack our children and they must rot in jail.Whatever happens to the accused, we’ll makesure all the prescripts of the law are followed inorder to protect the child, saidDirector ofKhulaCommunity Development Project Majola.Headded, “Butwe’ll alsomake sure that she
is not failed by the state in terms of enjoyinglife to the fullest after this experience,”
According to Majola, the child deserves tobe treated with dignity and respect as en-shrined inSection 10 of theConstitutionof theRSA Act 108 of 1996 as amended.Congress of the People (COPE) members
have been at the court since Monday to showtheir support to the victim and her mother.“We hope the justice department would en-
sure that the accused is heavily punished forruining the poor child’s life, said Cope CllrNobenguni Magwaca.“We know God said thou shall not kill. But
our government should hang people who dothings like these. They don’t deserve to beamong people in our communities,” said IDA-MASA President Bishop Sandile Jika, addingthat as the church they had been prayingceaselessly for the child. The case is continuing this week.

Numsa President Andrew Chirwa handeda memorandum on behalf of 341 000 membersto the Department of Labour’s official Mzim-khulu Papu.Papu is expected to deliver the memoran-
dum to the National Labour Department inPretoria via the office of the Provincial La-bour Department in East London. The memorandum contained a myriad of
demands directed at government and employ-ers who are accused of colluding to continuethe oppression of the working class 20 yearsafter the advent ofdemocracy in thecountry.“Twenty years
after democracywe(the workers) arestill not free. Someof our leaders whotaught us that onlynationalisation ofmines and landwill

ers had arrived in the biblical promised landshould leave the workers to struggle on theirown. Workers, he said, refuse to be used asa gateway to parliament by some members ofthe union-federation leadership.According to Chirwa, Numsa rejected the
Youth-wage subsidy.Youth instead, shouldbeencouraged to get better education and skillsrequired by the job-market while their par-ents’ job security was ensured.“The Youth wage subsidy will not help cre-
ate jobs. It has not helped anywhere in theworld,” he said.Numsa instead, called on government to

MPL Tamara Xhanti working together withthe Department of Social Development andSpecial Programmes and local Councillorswithin her Constituency brought early win-ter relief to hundreds of toddlers belonging toeight Early Childhood Development Centres(creches) in Motherwell last week Thursday.
“This is government reaching out to thepoorest of the poor in the community,” saidXhanti who Chairs the Social Developmentand Special Programms Portfolio Committeein Bhisho after giving out blankets and mat-tresses to five creches and almost R18 000 infunding each to another three.
The funding would assist the institution’spayment of a stipend for educators and ad-ministrators, buying of food (nutrition) andother educational materials necessary.
“This is going to help us a great deal. Weneeded this kind of assistance in an areawhere parents are mostly unemployed andstruggling to pay R80 a month fees,” said NU12B’s Bongolethu Educare Centre PrincipalVuyiswa Zenani, adding that there wouldnow be enough food for the children.
Xhanti said that while government did nothave enough funds to assist every departmentand individual’s needs, her timely delibera-tions with the Social Development Depart-ment and Special Programmes Nelson Man-dela Bay District Manager, Thembile Ngqa-bayi, made it possible for these veryimportant centres to receive the required as-sistance.
Xhanti thanked Ward 54, 55, 56 and 57 localcouncillors and her Constituency OfficerMorgan Tshela who assisted in identifyingthe needy institutions whose plight was aboutto change for the better.

OVER80 000 spectators are expected to descendinPortElizabethover thecourseof the Ironmanweekend from April 4 to 6.
Ironmanorganiserssaythisdoesn’teventakeinto account the number of spectators who sup-port on the outer lying sections of the course.Ironman Coordinator, Michael Flanagan,
saidwith the increased number of athletes bothlocally and internationally taking part in therace, they expect an increase in spectator num-bers as most athletes travel with friends and
families. “It is not uncommon to see spectatorssetting up gazebos the night before the race toget a prime spot, particularly on Marine Drive.Over 80% of athletes come from outside of theEastern Cape,” he said.Flanagan said they had a very strong profes-
sional line up this year which should make foran exciting race.In the men’s field, defending champion, Ron-
nie Schildknecht, returns along with South Af-rica’s hopeful, James Cunnama. In addition the2005 Ironman World Champion, Faris Al-Sul-tan, comes back, along with professional newly- fledged ,KyleBuckingham, whowasplaced 1st
in his age group at the IronmanWorld Champi-onship in 2013. Bas Diederenwho came third in2013 is also back,” said Flanagan.Apart from the professional athletes, sports
stars such as Ollie Le Roux, Joel Stransky,Werner Swanepoel, Andre Nel and Jacques Ru-dolph will all also be participating.“The most significant change this year is the
change in the course. The swimcoursehasbeenchanged from two laps of 1.9km to a rectangularcourse of 3.8km. The rectangle flanks the coast-line from Hobie Beach to Kings Beach.“Athleteswill nowalso start in three separate
waves as opposed to the previous single mass
start. The bike course has been changed fromthree laps of 60km to two laps of 90km. The newbike course will take athletes into a whole newsection of Port Elizabeth, incorporating somebreathtaking scenery.“Athletes will go up Walmer Boulevard as in
previous years but instead of turning around atSeaView, theywill continue and turn right intoOld Sea View Road, go past Lake Farm on toKragga Kamma Road before arriving at Mait-lands via De Stades Road. From Seaview Roadthey will rejoin the old course and head backdown to Summerstrand via Sardinia Bay Roadand Marine Drive,” he said.

NEW kid on the block, Mzwabantu Dabaza ofKwaNobuhle in Uitenhage made historywhen he beat the experienced East Londoner,Lutho Nkonki for the vacant Eastern CapeJunior Flyweight championshop at theMdantsane Indoor Sports Centre on Sunday.
Dabaza, who came to the ring with a profes-sional record of 10 fights, 8-wins and 5Koswith 2 losses, stopped Nkonki(19-10-4KOs-and9 losses) after seven blistering rounds.“The referee (Andile Matika) stopped the
fight in the seventh round after realising thatNkonki was taking too much punishment
from my boy,” said an overjoyed Dabaza’smentor, Louis Phillip.Phillip who trains his boxers at the Mini-
Gym in John Street, Uitenhage was prettysure that fit-as-a-fiddle Dabaza would becrowned the new champion, come the fightnight.Phillip admitted however, that he did not
expect the classic and stylish way in whichhis protege was going to annex the title fromthe East London foe in front of his vociferouscrowd.“I thought we had over-trained. The boy
was 47.35 Kg at the official weigh-in in EastLondon, way below the 48.98kg Junior-Fly-weight limit.
“But this is the title thatwas the launchpadfor the careers of great boxing champions,Vuyani Nene and Mzukisi Sikali. We had tobring it home - where it belongs,” said Phillipproudly.Nene went on to become the SA Junior fly-
weight andABU Junior Bantamweight titlistwhereas Sikali continued to become theWBUJunior-flyweight and IBO world Junior Ban-tamweight champion respectively.Phillip said next stop would be for Dabaza
to challenge for the national Junior-fly-weight title held by Thabiso Moorosi of theFree State in order to complete the task of hispredecessors - that of bringing back the lostglory to Nelson Mandela Bay boxing.
