This was said by Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) members during an over- sight visit. MPAC members were less than pleased by the dilapidating IPTS road under construction in the KwaZakhele area. MPAC member Noluthando Mapu said they had received numerous complaints from busi- nesses and residents in the area who could not access adjoining roads owing to the poor plan- ning. “The major problems with this planning are that the businesses operating in the area have no access points, the school children walking on the roads are not safe because there is no space for them to cross over, church goers in the area cannot access their church and there is no sig- nage informing people where to drive. This was poorly planned with no consideration for the community staying in the area,” said Mapu. MPAC chairman, Timmy Tutu, said he was also disappointed with the lack of a projects transport plan, a road safety audit plan and a traffic calming plan. “We can see that this road is falling apart. There are no barricades and drivers are freely using the lanes which are still under construc- tion,” said Tutu. Tutu said they would investigate further and would take recommendations made of the project so far, to council for deliberation. “It is unfortunate because we can’t make deci- sions now. This project needs a lot of work and so far it is lacking in so many areas,” added Tu- tu. IPTS road construction project manager, Luk- holo Badi, admitted that they had failed to meet two deadlines owing to unforeseen circumstan- ces. “Our current deadline is the end of March when we will have a practical completion which means that we mark all the problem areas on the roads and we tackle those. We were original- ly meant to finish last year June and we extend- ed the deadline to December. Those extensions were due to SMME’s strikes and problems with the salt pipelines (crossing under the road) we did not foresee,” said Badi. The IPTS project has been synonymous with poor planning and allegations of corruption for years now. Earlier reports by local newspapers detailed delays due to infighting and corruption. In February this year a local newspaper re- ported that the municipality had to put all new contracts related to the system on hold for the next four months. The municipality said they are still waiting for an additional R393 million from the Treasury for its capital and operating budgets in this fi- nancial year. The municipality received R230 million in the 2014/ 2015 budget. Something thatwe as black people did not do before. HAVE you just finished school and want acareer that is in demand? Or are you cur-rently employedwith little time but lots ofambition? Are you on amission to study in-tensively and qualify still this year?

If so, maybe you should consider doing acourse via the Institute for Certified Book-keepers (ICB) and become a bookkeeper bystudying full or part time at Boston CityCampus this year.

Kerry Damons of Boston City Campus &Business College points out that bookkeep-ing is one of the top 10 priority scarce skillsaccording to Fasset (the Finance, Accountingand related Services Seta). “This means thatthere are jobs out there for qualified book-keepers,” says Damons. “In its Sector SkillsPlan Update April 2014 to March 2019, Fassetstates that bookkeeper vacancies exist be-causeapplicantsgenerally lack the skills, for-mal qualification and experience that em-ployers require. It follows that thosewho in-vest in accredited bookkeeping courses arelikely to find excellent work positions thatoffer good pay and good career prospects.”

Howdoyoubecome a qualified bookkeep-er? You can enroll for ICB qualifications atany of Boston City Campus & Business Col-lege’s campusesnationwide.Asanaccreditedtraining provider, Boston offers ICB Nation-al Diplomas as well as National Certificates.

Thewonderful thingabout ICBbookkeep-ing courses is that they canbedone full-timeor part-time and offer flexibility that notmanyother courses canmatch. Studying fulltime at a college is a popular option with

most school leavers. People who work butwish to improve their prospects and earningcapacityusually enrol for part time studyingat a college.

Damons believes that bookkeeping is anexcellent option for people of all ages andbackgrounds. “You can enter the bookkeep-ing field on different levels,” she explains.“Whether you come straight out of school orwhether you come from a work environ-ment that is totally unrelated to bookkeep-ing, it doesn’t matter.”

She cites the example of Stanley Groot-boom. In April 2012, Grootboom made abrave decision - he resigned from his job toregister at BostonBusinessCollege Port Eliz-abeth for the ICB Certified Technical Finan-cial Accounting National Diploma. Undernormal conditions this is a two-year qualifi-cation.

But Stanley calculated the cost of beingunemployed - knowing that the sooner hegot back to employment, the better - andcompleted his course within a year. Besidesdoing it in less time, he also achieved greatresults in his studies, averaging 88% overall.Grootboom was awarded the Best StudentAward at the graduation ceremony of Bos-ton City Campus & Business College PE.

“Remember also that you can start withan entry-level course and climb up to moreadvanced qualifications when it suits youand your budget,” Damons adds. “Studyingbookkeeping certainly has lots going for it.”

ANenergy efficiency project is seeing compa-nies throughout the Eastern Cape reap hugefinancial rewards from an otherwise costlyexercise aimed at reducing their reliance onthe strained electricity grid.

Eastern Cape-based company Rhino Light-ing is one of the auditors who have been in-cluded in the Private Sector Energy Efficien-cy (PSEE) project, sponsored by the UK De-partment for International Development.Rhino Lighting managing director, Heath-

erMcEwan, said several businesses in the re-gion had already enlisted for the audits.“Companieswhich spend betweenR750 000

and R45million per annum on energy are eli-gible for up to four fully funded days of directon site support,” saidMcEwan. This includedenergy assessments, identification of energyefficiency opportunities, and follow-up sup-port, she said. The audits look at a range of energy-saving

measures which businesses can implement, and how they can reduce their CO2 emis-sions.Old Grey Union executive manager, Ian

Pringle, said Grey High School had enlistedin the PSEE programme to highlight any po-tential savings on its electricity usage. Theschool has already reapedhuge financial ben-efits from enlisting Rhino Group in 2011 toswitch its antiquated hot water boilers in thehostel to energy-efficient heat pumps.“Thanks to the heat pumps, we have been

able to save about R6 000 per month on elec-tricity costs, and that includes payment forthe new system,” said Pringle.“With this PSEE audit we are able to hone

in onwherewe can save further. We are look-ingat critical pointswhere the school isusinga lot of electricity.”McEwan said one audit revealed that ama-

jor local business could save more thanR12 000 annually – or reduce its carbon diox-ide emissions by 10 tonnes – simply by chang-ing the setting on the air conditioning systemfrom 18˚C to 22˚C.According to academic and green building

consultant, Chris Allen, it was important tochange themindset of businesses by showingthe cost effectiveness of reducing the relianceon Eskom.Allen, a formerGrey pupil, is behind initia-

tives aimed at transforming the prestigeGrey campus into one geared towards energyefficiency and renewable energy.“If we can inform the minds of pupils, we

can achieve a much greater transformationof thinking in terms of sustainability and getthemto informtheir parents tomakechangesat home and also in theirworkplace,” saidAl-len, an NMMU lecturer in Building Sciencefocusing on sustainable design and construc-tion.For more information on the PSEE audits,

The problem of jetlag with Liverpoolplayers was evident in the first stanzaand City’s players capitalised on this.

City’s defender Onesimo Maxengwanaheaded home the first goal in the 15thminute.

Following the first goal, SipheleleGwenu Jonas scored from the penaltymark in the 20th minute. City’s skilfulmidfielder Sakhile Nkewana scored aneasy goal in the 42th minute.

Liverpool came up with good build-upsbut City’s goalkeeper Lolly Libanzi de-nied them. In the 50th minute, however,Liverpool strikerPhelani Mkane un-leashed a salvo thatbeat Libanzi to de-crease the deficit to3-1.

City were kept ontheir back foot for al-most the whole re-maining time as theLiverpool kept on

asking questions. Mncedisi Chutshelascored the second goal of Liverpool inthe 75th minute.

Liverpool could have equalised butNhlakanipho Zungu’s efforts were fistedby Libanzi at the end of the game.
