Forming what was aptly referred to as the Peo- ples’ Parliament by speakers, were members of Numsa, Fawu, Ceppawu Sadtu, CWU, and Deno- sa among other unions. Vavi said he had come to consult the workers and the general public about the way to go in or- der to claim back Cosatu from “liars and thieves who were concerned only about their stomachs”. He said all unions under Cosatu supported Numsa. The problem, however, were the leaders who were receiving “sweet” tenders and positi- ons of power in government. “Those who fired Numsa (about 364 000 mem- bers) from Cosatu, and everyone else who sym- pathised with them were killing the union that was started by revolutionaries like Vuyisile Mi- ni, Barayi and John Gomomo,” said Vavi. Vavi said, the SACP under the guard of Higher Education Minister Dr Blade Nzimande was no longer the one Chris Hani led. Instead of it being the vanguard of the poor and marginalised com- munities, the SACP was the vanguard of parlia- ment under Nzimande. “We are seeing a slow-motion of the implosion of Cosatu. We have tried everything to avoid this crisis.” The unity crisis in Cosatu, SACP, the demo- cratic mass formations and the organs of state, Vavi said, was inevitable because of the current leadership. According to Vavi, Cosatu had veered off the way and workers were asking themselves “Is this the freedom we were fighting for?” - as the ANC government was run by factions who were “blun- ting, domesticating and hollowing out domestic structures as instruments of popular power”. He mentioned the SABC, SAA and SARS as some of the examples. Vavi said workers had to decide their future. Either they take the mandate of helping Cosatu to rise back to life or find an alternative. An alternative (trade union) option for the South African working class was discussed with much ardour as many of those present made it clear that they no longer trusted Cosatu to repre- sent their interests. In his synopsis of the status quo earlier, fired Numsa general secretary Irvin Jim said disillu- sioned South Africans should not mourn - it was time for them to act by joining the United Front. “This is official. Identify honest and trustworthy people to represent you in the local government elections in 2016,” said Jim. Both Vavi and Jim said the country should await a call for mass action. This would be protest marches against load- hedding, poverty, unemployment and corrup- tion, among others. Jim also said they were against the xenopho- bia that was rearing its ugly face in South Africa. A MARCH tomorrow (Thursday) has beenorganised by disillusioned Kwazakhele resi-dents who demand that Sabelo Williams, apensioner who is renowned for fighting fortheir housing problems, is left to work inde-pendently and peacefully in the ward office.

Hundreds of residents are expected to as-semble at Sali Street at 10 am to march to theoffice of councillor Bongo Nombiba.Williams, popularly known as Tshawe, hisclan name, had an arrangement with Nombi-ba to work in his office in Sali Street everyWednesday. On this day, Nombiba works inhis other office in Kwandokwenza.According to Nombiba, the arrangementwas aimed at helping Tshawe to be able toassist residentswhohadproblemswith prop-erties as a result of the process of buying andselling of houses for R15 000.

“I saw that uMdange had passion for thisand, without consulting the municipality, Iopened the doors for him,” said Nombiba ofTshawe, theneighbourhoodwatch chairman.Tshawe, whose services were free, was notonly helping Kwazakhele residents withtheir housing problems. Also benefiting fromhis legal prowess and connections were resi-dents fromZwide, NewBrighton andMother-well.“When Tshawe entered into this arrange-ment with the councillor, there were nowardcommittees in place,” said Nombulelo Ncete-zo, a member of the committee, adding thatwith a legally constituted structure in place,Tshawe was supposed to work with the wardcommittee - and be accountable. When Tshawe failed to account on amatteron which he and the ward Committee did notsee eye-to-eye, they had locked Tshawe out ofthe office and said they would open for himonly when he was prepared to account.

SOUTH Africans are at loggerheads aboutwhether it is right or wrong to vandalise thestatuesofapartheidleadersdisplayedinpublicplaces. The law is taking its own course. Port Eliza-beth police spokesman Captain Sandra JanseVan Rensburg reported that a 24-year-oldmanhad been arrested for the vandalism to theQueen Victoria statue in Port Elizabeth onApril 5, but later released in court owing to in-sufficient evidence.Express Indaba asked residents what theythought of the removal of the statues and theyhad this to say:

) “Remove all apartheid statues in publicplaces and replace them with those of our he-roes of the past. We must rewrite history forthe sake of our children. Africans have kings

and queens as well as liberation heroes andheroines who deserve to be honoured,” saidAndile XoliofPortElizabeth, adding thathehadgrown up learning about Jan van Riebeeckand not about the history of African leaders.

) “I want the statues of apartheid leadersremoved, but theremust be amore structuredand organised way to do it. We must alwaysshow discipline in what we do as a nation. Idon’t believe in the defacing and painting ofthe apartheid statues. It is wrong andmust bepunished by law,” said Lwandile Nokwe of PortElizabeth.

) Lindokuhle Zicina, also of Port Elizabethsaid, “Those who know politics should do asthey please, but must not touch Nelson Man-dela’s statue. He fought for our freedom.”– NCEBA DLADLA

THEimminentopeningofwhatwill be theEast-ern Cape’s only ice rink – in the Fun Factoryzone of theR1.7-billionBaywestMall – has skat-ingenthusiasts,schoolsandfamilieseagertohitthe ice for good, clean and safe entertainment.

DaveRodger, owner of the IceRinkCompanywhich will manage the operation, said thatwhile the primary function of the rink was toprovideavenueforentertainmentandsocialac-tivity, the secondary aim was to identify andgrow skating talent within the region so thatteams could be formed to put the province onthe competitive ice skating map. This, he said, could pave the way for an East-ern Province ice hockey team, as well as schoolteams and amateur leagues. The rink is on track to open when BaywestMall opens its doors on May 21.“Ourmission is to grow the number of peopleskating. From there it will enable the teams toidentifyskaterswithtalent,”saidRodger, whosecompanywas formed in1996andownsandoper-ates five other ice rinks – four in Gauteng andone in KwaZulu-Natal.“If youwant to be a professional skater, you’llneed to learn how to skate first. The benefit forthekids is that theyarenotonlyentertained, butthey are also getting exercise while socialisingwithin a safe and secure environment.”The ice rink would have medics on standbyduringpeaktraffic times,whilemanagersondu-

ty would be trained in first aid.Rodger said the Baywest ice rink would be“North American-sized”, measuring 27m x 54m– the standard size for South African ice rinks,he said.“Ourrinkopens thedoor for school teamsandamateur leagues,” he said. “We are starting offwith a population not acquainted with ice skat-ing, but over time peoplewill learn how to skateand theywill love it. From there theywill followpaths such as figure or speed skating and icehockey. Our rink will cater for this.”Furthering Rodger’s mission to nurture iceskating talent in the province is the opening ofhis skating academy.

“We will run a skating academy which willconsist of an eight-week course, teaching peoplehow to skate. This would give parents a chanceto ‘ice-proof’ their children and for the childrentodecidewhether to continue to advance into ei-ther figure skating or ice hockey sports activi-ties,” Rodger said.WithCCTVandonesideof therinkconsistingof sheer glass, Rodger said the chances for anti-social or bad behaviour were “absolutely mini-mal.”“We also take a hard line on bad behaviour. We are very strict on that, becausewe are cater-ing for ages ranging from five years up to 30years and over,” he said.

The rink would also play host to specialevents in the future, Rodger said. “For now weare focusingonestablishingiceskatingasanor-mal social and sporting activity for the peopleof the EasternCape – that is our primemission.Ice rinks are rare in South Africa, so we haveto introduce people to something which is for-eign to them.”Special discount rates would be available toschools, party groups and other ice hockeysports teams, said Rodger. Social skating ses-sions would last from 10am to 5pm and from7.30pm to 10.30pm or 11pm, with the time from5pm to 7.30pm set aside for sports and the skat-ing academy.BaywestMall marketingmanager SamanthaHewitson said the ice rink was a major draw-card for families wanting to experience uniqueentertainment within safe and enjoyable sur-roundings.“Parentswillbeable todropoff theirchildrenat therinkwhile theyexploreourshopsandres-taurants, safe in the knowledge that the rink isa safeandsecureenvironment,” saidHewitson.“All ourFunFactoryofferingsareboostedbythe fact that they are safe and secure. Parentsare able to do their own thing in themall whiletheir children are left to have fun, but are stillwithin easy reach. Most importantly, they willbe safe.”Restaurants, a bowling alley and games ar-cade, and state-of-the-art cinema wing are alsopart of the mall’s R100-million Fun Factorywing.
