Ufone was a subsidiary of PTCL (Pakistan Telecom Company
Limited) the largest operator in Pakistan. Since the transnational
operator Etisalat took over PTCL in 2006, Ufone has become a
subsidiary of Etisalat. Ufone has a fast growing base of over 10
million subscribers thanks to its successful operations.
In September 2006, Ufone selected Huawei to deploy the
nationwide GSM network at a contract value of above USD550
million. Ufone adopted Huawei's new-generation EnerG GSM
solution, including All-IP core network and BTS, to construct a GSM
network covering 1,500 cities and towns of Pakistan.
Milestones
In November 2006, Ufone project was going on successfully, with
hundreds of BTSs delivered in compliance with the RFI (Ready for
installation) monthly.
In September 2006, Ufone awarded a contract worth USD550
million to Huawei for the construction of a GSM network covering
1,500 cities and towns nationwide.
In 2004, Ufone entered into cooperation with Huawei in an
intelligent network project.
Meeting the need of fast subscriber growth
As one of the fastest growing mobile communication markets in
the world, Pakistan becomes the target of international operators.
Ufone spent less than 4 months attracting more than 1 million
mobile subscribers. In order to meet the need of rapid growth of
subscribers and support its marketing strategy, Ufone needs a
partner to support its rapid expansion urgently. Ufone expects the
partner has the capacity of fast network deployment and delivery,
cutting-edge technology, and long-term investment protection to
expand its existing old GSM network.
The innovative GSM BTS product family introduces such 3G
technologies as IP architecture, multi-carrier, high-efficiency power
amplifier, enhanced interference combination and elimination, PBT
and other RF technologies. All these offer the BTS products greater
transmitting power of 80-watt and higher static single
receiving sensitivity (-112.5 dBm), which increase coverage
radius by at least 20%, and reduce up to 30% sites for the
same coverage. The future-oriented All-IP platform is designed
to realize smooth evolution from 2G to 3G, the stronger
capability of service support, and lower investments of the
entire network.
Huawei's new-generation outdoor macro BTS, BTS3012AE,
is designed to work in a wide range of operating
temperatures and various environments. So it is well suited to
the hot and dry environment in Pakistan. In Islamabad, the
capital of Pakistan, this kind of BTS runs properly in the day-
and-night temperature difference up to 20 . This BTS has
enabled faster deployment for its large capacity and wide
coverage. These characteristics make the BTS3012AE very
popular.
Quick and quality delivery
Huawei has set up an efficient joint project team together
with senior experts and engineering technicians from Ufone.
Thanks to the careful project organization, the construction of
the GSM network is progressing as scheduled and has
entered the delivery stage. The site construction processes
and project management are scheduled and implemented by
hour, which set up a new record in the Pakistan
communication history. In November 2006, Huawei
completed the construction of hundreds of RFI sites by
turnkey way including civil engineering, satisfying Ufone's
need of the monthly increment of 1 million subscribers.
Close win-win cooperation
Etisalat, Ufone's parent company, is an active transnational
operator based in the Middle East. As early as 2003, Huawei
constructed the first 3G network in the Middle East for
Etisalat. In June 2005, Etisalat signed a memorandum for
establishing a strategic partnership with Huawei. As Etisalat
is moving towards internationalization, Huawei has been
growing together with the operator and strengthened the
strategic partnership.
In 2005, Huawei's sales revenues in Pakistan amounted to
USD270 million. At the end of 2006, the sales have
increased by 200%. Huawei has become the largest
telecommunication supplier of Pakistan and established good
partnership with the major operators in Pakistan.
"The previous network roll-out was also the single
largest plan in the history of Pakistan and this time
again we are keeping the precedence. With
Huawei's EnerG GSM solution, we have been able to
provide more high-speed wireless data service, and
thus further enhance our service offerings to Ufone
subscribers."
