Founded in 1976, Emirates Telecommunications Corporation,
Etisalat is one of the leading operators in the world, well known for
business leadership, service excellence and considerable revenue.
Etisalat's mobile network is one of the most advanced networks in
the world. While strengthening its mobile network operations in
UAE, Etisalat is pursuing a strategy of international expansion and
aims to be a global TOP 10 operator in 5 years.
Milestones
In October 2006, in Egypt, Etisalat selected Huawei to deploy the
unified 2G/3G network, all value-added service platforms, as well as
transmission and data communication equipment.
In September 2006, in UAE, Huawei was awarded the HSPA
commercial contract of UAE and began to construct the largest
HSPA commercial network in the Middle East and North Africa.
In September 2006, in Pakistan, Huawei obtained the GSM
network contract of Ufone (a subsidiary of Etisalat in Pakistan), to
construct a network covering 1,500 cities and towns of Pakistan.
In May 2006, in Saudi Arabia, Huawei became a major UMTS
equipment supplier of Mobily (a mobile subsidiary of Etisalat in
Saudi Arabia).
In June 2005, Etisalat and Huawei signed a memorandum to
establish global strategic partnership.
In December 2003, Huawei deployed the first UMTS network in
the Middle East and North Africa.
The largest HSPA commercial network in the Middle East
and North Africa
Etisalat began to construct its 3G network since 2003 and
launched the commercial HSDPA services at the end of 2005. The
primary consideration of Etisalat was to find a long-term strategic
partner that offered all-around support based on Etisalat's global
development strategy. Huawei's outstanding support capability at
the aspect of Iub IP, HSPA, quick response and network delivery
capabilities, and customer-centric innovation capabilities were
well recognized by Etisalat. In September 2006, Etisalat chose
Huawei again for the capacity expansion of its 3G network in
UAE to construct the largest HSPA network based on Iub IP
transmission in the Middle East and North Africa. As of
December 2006, Huawei had completed the HSPA network
in Abu Dhabi, the capital of UAE. Huawei's quick
implementation and delivery capabilities allowed time for
Etisalat to develop 3G users.
Global strategic partner
"We are choosing a 3G partner rather than a supplier",
Etisalat has stressed repeatedly in many occasions, "Because
Abu Dhabi Dubai Sharjah Ras Al Khaima Ajman Fujarjah
the 3G supplier has to work with us for a long time in the
future and meet many future challenges in 3G operations
together with us." Under this precondition, what Etisalat
chose was not just a prevailing solution, but a trustworthy
strategic partner who can grow with it over time.
In addition to the cooperation with Etisalat in the UAE,
Huawei also obtained a HSDPA commercial contract from
Mobily in the 3G field to offer an HSDPA network and an
IMS-oriented core network. In the GSM field, Ufone has
awarded Huawei a GSM contract worth USD550 million to
construct its GSM network that covers over 1,500 cities and
towns throughout Pakistan.
"The UAE HSPA network has a significant strategic
implication to Etisalat. It sets the ground for global
expansion of our 3G development. Huawei's
innovative solutions offer us the competitive
advantage and will help consolidate our leadership in
the global 3G market. "
