Dear Neighbours,

Welcome to the 24th issue of The Lossie Local, a

special one this time as all of the profits will be

donated to charity. I’ve been busy getting the

magazine together so haven’t yet decided which

organisations will benefit, but aim to choose a

mixture of local ones, as well as some further

afield. I’ll let you know next issue.

I’m only able to do this thanks to the continued

support of our advertisers. Please do remember

to use their services wherever you can, and

remember to say you spotted them here please.

We welcome this issue Jasper Image on page 15,

Home Cook on page 29 and Moray Gardens on

page 34. If you have a business in the local area

why not give advertising a try? At only £32 for a

quarter page you can’t go far wrong. Check out

the ‘advertising’ tab at www.thelossielocal.co.uk

for full rates and details or give me a call for a

Media Pack - 815328.

I’m sure the Senior Citizens Bus Trust Walking

Group have done another great job delivering

this issue - thank you to all volunteers. And thank

you too to Brian Smith for the fantastic front

cover image. His work can be viewed at

www.jasperimage.co.uk.

As usual there are a few things going on over the

next couple of months. I don’t have the space to

list them all here, so make sure you keep a look

out as you go through the magazine. The next

issue is due for delivery week beginning 25

November, so if you’re aware of anything going

on after that date please get in touch to let me

know and I’ll be sure to list it. Even better why

not submit an article? Full details about how I go

about including community and charity

information, either free of charge or at a reduced

rate, are under the ‘community’ tab at

www.thelossielocal.co.uk.

Ian Gale Station Commander

Welcome to the Autumn edition of the magazine,

again it has been a busy period for the Station, gearing up

for the transition of Typhoon, 617 Squadron and

5 Force Protection Flight preparing to go out of area and the infamous Lossie Raft Race.

RAF Lossiemouth was excited to host a detachment of Typhoons from 1 (Fighter) Squadron, during the Combined Qualified Weapons Instructor exercise held on 15 – 28

July. The exercise aims to provide training to aircrew, surveillance, intelligence and ground personnel – all of whom are the ‘Top Guns’ in their field. As well as the huge tactical benefits

gained from the Exercise, it allowed 1 Squadron to see the local area and try out the facilities that they will occupy from next autumn. Thank you to everyone who tolerated the extra noise –

I hope the spectacle of the aircraft and also the large influx of additional spending compensated for any disturbance.

The Lossiemouth Raft race will be completed by

the time this article is published – everyone is

gunning for reigning champions The Steamboat to win, and I know our Army friends from Kinloss Barracks will be out to get a clean

sweep after triumphing in the Tornado Pull at the Friends and Families Day! I hope everyone who participated or attended the raft race had a great time – we certainly do!

Looking at operational matters, 617 Squadron and 5 (Force Protection) Wing are preparing to

go to Afghanistan and have completed their pre- deployment training. The Squadron are currently in the midst of their Mission Rehearsal, where their training and preparation are tested

by a series of rigorous scenarios. Meanwhile, we are looking forward to the return of 12 (Bomber) Squadron soon. On return, both 12 and 617 Squadrons will disband before the end

of March 2014, and 617 Squadron will reform as the UK’s first front-line Lightning II Squadron in 2016.

It is a time of considerable change on station and the future for RAF Lossiemouth is bright, with the Typhoon move from RAF Leuchars

starting in the summer of 2014 and will eventually see 3 Typhoon Squadrons based here by Spring 2015.

This is my last foreword for The Lossie Local, in November my successor Group Captain Mark

Chappell will take the reins for the next exciting chapter. I would like to publicly thank everyone in the local community for their friendship and support and for making Sally and I feel so very

welcome since our arrival. We will be back!

LOSSIEMOUTH FOOTBALL CLUB

A trip into the unknown faced Lossiemouth in

mid-July as they headed south to face Arbroath in a pre-season friendly. The Gayfield side started well and took the lead from the spot after only five minutes, but

Lossie fought back to level through. The visitors then had a goal disallowed but went into the half-time

interval a goal up after Liam Archibald curled a fine effort beyond the keeper and into the net.

Arbroath fought back to level and the second half tore from end-to-end with Lossie giving

the travelling support cause for optimism, only to concede a last gasp winner to their

hosts.

The final pre-season warm-up took place at

Forest Park, with Burghead Thistle providing the opposition. An entertaining first half ended with Lossie 2-0 ahead thanks to two Matty Davidson goals, and Scott Wilson

added a third in the second half to complete the scoring.

Lossiemouth played their first competitive game of the season on the last day of July when they travelled south to face Rothes in

the first round of the North of Scotland Cup. Rothes won both league fixtures against Lossie last season but the Coasters got off to a fine start on a warm evening at

Mackessack Park, going ahead early on when Liam Archibald struck. Rothes drew level in the second half, but Lossie rallied to score twice through Darren Bailey and Scott

Wilson to secure passage into the quarter-finals, where they will entertain local minnows Forres Mechanics.

The league season began in early August and Lossiemouth were scheduled to open

their campaign at home against Shire side Formartine United. The Pitmedden side choked on the last lap of last season, losing

on the final day to Cove Rangers when a draw would have secured them the championship. Determined not to make the same mistake again this season, Formartine

brought in Cammy Keith to score goals and the striker got off to a flyer, rattling in a hat-trick as Lossie slumped to defeat on the opening day.

Lossiemouth exited the North of Scotland Cup at the hands of Forres Mechanics after a controversial game at Grant Park. The visitors were awarded two penalties and

Lossie were reduced to ten men as Forres completed a 3-0 win to earn a place in the semi-finals against Nairn County or Fort William.

The Scottish Cup draw handed Lossie a

tricky home tie against junior side Culter. The tie will take place on Saturday, September 14, at Grant Park, Lossiemouth. Culter won entry to the Scottish Cup by virtue

of winning the north region Superleague, and will be taking part for the third time in recent years.

Lossie Youths’ debut season in the Moray Welfare league continues until September, with the youngsters having sprung a few

surprise results so far. The free-scoring

Page 14: Pdf the lossie local autumn 2013 for website

youngsters rattled in 11 goals without

reply against Elgin Albion, cruised to a 5-1 win at St

Marnans, and a 3-3 draw at

home to Fochabers. Remaining fixtures will be played on Sundays, with home games

taking place at the playing fields.

Lossiemouth FC Social Club is busy lining up

entertainment and events for the coming months, with a race night and a boxing night both planned for between now and the end of the year. Full details will appear on the

Social Club Facebook page and around the town nearer the time. New members always welcome – please ask at the bar for details.

The club’s supporters now have their own internet forum, which is used for discussions on all matters relating to the club and the Press and Journal Highland League. The

forum has become very popular with fans

throughout the Highland League and contains information on all levels of

local football, including local junior, welfare and women’s clubs and leagues. To sign up and

have your say, visit www.fitbanorth.com. You can also follow the club on Twitter @lossiemouthfc.

You’ve Got Mail

Communication today is evident everywhere, expeditious and universal in its scope. At home, work, leisure or even out walking, the world is at your fingertips! Facebook, Twitter and Friends Reunited are well known as being “instant messenger tools” to convey past, present or even future aspects of the goings-on of the individual. The cost to both companies and customers can be considerable. Voice, text and photo formats are used to send and receive messages but unfortunately the message isn’t always “good news”. The Bible is God’s “web page” of communication to us and is displayed in three main ways: Creation, Conscience and Christ. Firstly Creation is described by the Psalmist: “the heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of His hands, Psalm 19:1”. Regardless of continent, canyon or crag, the awe-inspiring beauty is oft silent but imposingly evident. Creation displays the Creator’s handiwork, His eternal power and His divine nature in unmistakeable fashion. The apostle Paul tells us about

another way God communicates with us; our conscience. We need no reminder of the accuracy of his words in that “we suppress the truth by our wickedness since what may be known about God is made plain to us, Romans 1:19”. It is not ignorance of fact but deliberate suppression of the truth. Our conscience bears witness to God’s moral standards which either, as one author writes, “accuses us”, therefore acts as an effective restraint, or “excuses us” when we harden ourselves to sin. “The fool says in his heart there is no God, Psalm 14:1”. The last but not the least “live-link” is the Lord Jesus Christ. Holy Scripture tells us, “the word became flesh and made His dwelling among us” John 1:14. In the Old Testament, where God was “present”, He communicated with His people in the Tabernacle. Despite the cruel suffering it brought to Him, the Lord Jesus in

Gospel Hall, James Street

the New Testament, communicates the message of good news through the cross of Calvary. Disciples of Jesus assumed the role as “posties” to deliver that “good news”; “if you declare with your mouth, Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved, Romans 10:9”. Likewise Christians today assume the “postie” role and are entrusted to deliver the “good news”. We dare not defraud through defective doctrine, but proudly proclaim through witness and word to His universal audience. Refuse to “return to sender” unanswered mail or dispose of “good news” as junk mail. God wants us to be “Friends Reunited” but we must acknowledge our sinful, separated situation from God. Forget the hype and “Skype” of the world; a “knee-mail” (i.e. prayer), which recognises your want of a Saviour is needed today, 1st Class. Be on that “mailing list” i.e. the “Book of Life” before “dispatches” of eternal destinies are distributed. (All quotations from the NIV)

Lossiemouth Art Group After 5 successful years we approach the start of another year of activity; painting with mixed mediums, with a different tutor each month passing on their expertise and

trade secrets to develop our skills and knowledge. The results of our endeavours can be viewed at our forthcoming exhibition

on Saturday 21 September in Lossiemouth Community Centre. It’s free admission, and artwork can be purchased at a nominal fee. Please come in and support this local group - your attendance gives members

encouragement, and

any money raised goes towards paying for tutors and keeping our costs down for members; this is our main means of fundraising.

We hold various events during the year, such as a Christmas Card competition for

the Sheila Simpson Trophy, last awarded

to Margaret Michie. We also have a couple of trips out to do sketching and getting inspiration from our chosen area, e.g. Brodie Castle or Findhorn Harbour. And

for many years we’ve been out for a meal at lunchtime at the end of the session (this cost is covered by small weekly payments which one of the members arranges - we always have a great time).

We’re a small friendly group of 17 members, meeting on a Tuesday afternoon in the Community Centre. Much as we

would love to welcome new members, we’re restricted by the size of the room, but anyone interested in joining can leave their name and telephone number at the Community Centre.

You don’t have to be a Turner or competent artist, but for those who can dream and want to develop an ability,

members and tutors are only too willing to pass on their knowledge and skills. The club has arrangements with local art suppliers and is a member of the Association of Amateur Artists, where we are able to

purchase materials at a discount. We also have a large

selection of materials for club members to use.

Fees are just £1.50 weekly, as we like to keep the cost down for members. Our most recent session started on 20 August as we prepare for our Exhibition. We do hope you’ll stop by on the 21st.

The Moray Coeliac Group celebrates its 25th anniversary year in 2013, and to mark the occasion we’re holding a Food Fayre in Elgin on 20 Oct in Elgin Town Hall (11am till

3.30pm). As well as local producers of gluten free foods there will be an excellent opportunity to ‘recipe swap’, network and learn more about local restaurants and cafes that can cater for those who require to follow a gluten free diet.

Gluten free awareness and the availability of safe things to eat is on the increase

(thankfully), however there are still a lot of ‘myths’ about coeliac disease. Some celebrities have spoken out about following a gluten free diet, however things are much more serious and complicated for someone who has been diagnosed as having Coeliac Disease.

Coeilac Disease is not an allergy, it’s an autoimmune disease caused by intolerance to

gluten, which causes damage to the lining of the small intestine. There is no cure or medication for the condition; the only treatment is to follow a strict lifelong gluten free diet.

Coeliac UK is a national charity who provide support, campaigning and undertake research into the condition. Recent research suggests

that 1 in 100 people have the condition but staggeringly only 10-15% of those people are currently diagnosed. Many of us know people who say they have issues with wheat, persistent tummy trouble, anaemia or other symptoms, and the Moray Coeliac Group would like to ask

them to listen to their ‘gut feeling’ and consider the possibility of being tested for Coeliac Disease. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines states that anyone presenting to their GP with symptoms of irritable bowel should be tested

for Coeliac Disease.

The good news is that once established on a strict gluten free diet most people find that their symptoms gradually reduce and can even stop altogether; the small intestine repairs the

damage caused by eating gluten.

It can be confusing when first diagnosed with

the condition; this is where the Moray Group can help. We offer a ‘buddy’ system - someone to chat to who has been through the diagnosis process and adjusted to following a gluten free diet. The group meet on the first Saturday of the month at The Quicah in

Fochabers from 10.30 for coffee, cake and chat, and are always happy to welcome anyone who wants to drop by.

Fayre, or for information about the group please contact:

As a Personal Trainer and Fitness Expert I’m often asked about fad diets, and as we all know

you only have to Google the word ‘diet’ and a whole host of different types will appear. Atkins, The South Beach Diet, The Cabbage Soup Diet … but can this really be a sustained, healthy and

Years of competing internationally for Scotland

has meant that I’ve taken great care in fuelling my body with the correct foods to ensure that I perform to my best, and more recently I’ve discovered the wonderful world of Forever

burning stored fat cells and teaching you how to achieve and maintain your desired weight. Remaining committed to completing this

programme will help you develop good eating habits for life-long weight management and overall good health.

So what products are in the Clean 9 box and

how can they help you?

Did you know that you can drink Aloe Vera Gel?

I didn’t, but once I tried it and found out its health

benefits, I now drink it every day! The aloe gel is the key product in the weight management programme; why, you may ask yourself, is the drink the key product? Well, it contains over 200

different compounds and an abundance of vitamins and minerals, plus several amino acids. This product cleanses the digestive system and maintains healthy energy levels.

The next product in the box is Forever Lite Ultra with Aminotein that comes in two great flavours, Vanilla or Chocolate. Easy to

prepare, this is a perfect addition to your healthy forever lifestyle. They are high in protein and a

great meal replacement. Two shakes provide 100% RDA of vitamins and minerals. And to top it off they taste yum!!

Garcina Plus: I love this product and it’s in the

box because it aids natural metabolism, helps lower your cholesterol and also your fatty acids.

As if that’s not enough it will also give you healthy hair, nails and skin.

Bee Pollen: yes it’s not just for busy bees. It

boosts energy, stamina and assists in maintaining a healthy circulatory, digestive,

immune and nervous system. It’s a great multi-vitamin and perfect for all the family.

Moving on now to Step 2 - Nutri-Lean. In

addition to the above products, this part of the weight management programme includes Forever Lean and Forever Active Probiotic. So what can Forever Lean do for you? It can

help reduce the body’s absorption of calories from fat and carbohydrates. How does it do that? Well, it’s the fibre from the prickly pear and

the protein from the white kidney bean. When combining exercise and healthy eating habits, it can help you achieve your ideal weight. Finally, Forever Active Probiotic is a small, easy to

swallow beadlet that promotes a healthy digestive system and enhances nutrient

absorption and immune function.

I know this is a lot of information to digest, but why not contact me personally and we can work together to discuss how this weight management programme can fit into your daily routine. Don’t

worry, you’re not doing this on your own, I’ll be with you to support and guide you every step of the way. In addition to one-to-one time you get access to a dedicated Facebook support group

and Nutri-Lean website packed with great testimonials and motivational stories.

Interested in combining your love of health and well-being with a healthy income? Please get in touch and I can show you the Forever income

opportunity.

Enough from me for now, all my contact details are available at www.gladiatorfit.co.uk. So get in touch to have any of your questions answered and get started on the Forever weight

management programme.

With the winter approaching many of us will consider their options for warding off colds, flus and other bugs. Here are just a few tips on how to boost your immune

system naturally to help you to get through the cold season.

There is lots of scientific research about the immune building benefits of Vitamin C and how it helps to increase production of infection-fighting white blood cells in your body. It also increases antibodies like interferon that

coat the cell surfaces to help prevent viruses from entering your cells. Add some fresh lemon juice to your drinking water to increase intake of Vitamin C.

Vitamin D activates genes that help you fight viruses like the flu. It works in your respiratory cells to boost respiratory immunity, and also can help with the pain and misery associated with flu by

having an effect on inflammation.

Did you know that somewhere between

70% and 90% of your immune system is in your colon. Probiotic is a Greek word which means ‘for life’. If these good bacteria are found in large enough quantities, the undesirable, disease causing bacteria will be kept in check.

Stress, smoking, unhealthy food choices, medications (e.g. antibiotics) and environmental pollution (such as chloride in your tap water), all negatively affect bacterial balance. To increase your good bacteria in the colon either

use a high quality probiotic supplement from your health food shop, or eat fermented foods such as Kefir (from a previous article) or cultured vegetables (get in touch for a recipe) on a regular basis.

Omega-3 fat has been shown in a

number of studies to reduce total body inflammation and helps to lower the risk of developing many chronic diseases.

Researchers have now uncovered how these special fats enhance B-cell activity, a white blood component necessary to improve immune system activity and lower inflammatory response. Sources include fish oil, krill

oil and flax oil (see previous article).

Short and medium chain fatty acids

contained in virgin coconut oil such as Caprylic, Capric and Lauric acids have been found to have strong anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-protozoal properties, and are essential building blocks in boosting the body’s immune system.

Water is an essential and the major component of all living matter, and the largest single component of our bodies.

Water is the one substance (other than oxygen) that we must absolutely have if we are to survive. In order to hydrate your body optimally, you need to drink water that is alkaline and mineral rich. Alkaline water helps to remove free

radicals and toxins from the body. Ionized alkaline water also helps to neutralize acids and balance your body's pH. Since disease and sickness thrives in an acidic environment, drinking alkaline ionized water will strengthen

your immune system. Tap water is acidic and usually contains chloride, which will affect you bowel flora. Bottled water is also acidic and will influence you body’s pH in a negative way.

For more info see www.water-for-health.co.uk

Raw Honey contains antimicrobial agents that prohibit certain types of bacterial growth. It also has antioxidant properties. These properties destroy chemical agents that are biologically destructive and that have been

associated with many diseases.

Turmeric is one of the main ingredients in many curries. Curcumin is the known active compound in turmeric. In a study researchers found that curcumin helped

improve the ‘orderliness’ of cell membranes, which in turn made the cells more resistant to infection and malignancy.

Garlic is an active anti-microbial agent – effective against bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites and, unlike antibiotics, garlic does not destroy the body’s normal bowel flora. Garlic is a health-building herb rich in

potassium, zinc, vitamins A and C and selenium. It is best eaten fresh and finely chopped.

Ginger is a natural antibiotic and helps to warm and detox the body. A cup of ginger tea does wonders for a sore throat. It helps ease congestion and is antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory. Like onions and garlic, ginger stimulates T-cell activity.

Volatile oils derived from cinnamon bark

are antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial. Cinnamon has anti-inflammatory properties and can be effective when used at the onset of a cold or flu.

Cayenne pepper is considered a powerful immune system enhancer for numerous

reasons, including its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and its content of immune system supporting nutrients like beta carotene and Vitamin C.

So, how about a warming, hot tea with fresh lemon juice, some grated ginger a pinch of cinnamon and cayenne pepper sweetened with some raw honey. Or a lovely fresh vegetable curry with lots of

ginger, garlic, onion, turmeric, cayenne pepper and some creamed coconut.

The Arnica Network was formed in 2007 by parents concerned about the vaccination program and in interested in the role of

Natural Health in disease. Parents and practitioners meet up regularly, and use the online group to discuss vaccine issues and keeping healthy. Many take the decision

not to vaccinate, whilst others delay or use vaccinations selectively. Parents often feel

isolated in their decision making; Arnica aims to foster like-minded friendships and

provide support systems when making such choices for our families.

Community Food Moray (CFM) is a registered charity and social enterprise, so every penny of

income goes back into our services which support health and well-being in local Moray communities. We have 17 Food Outlets in Moray, providing access to affordable fruit and

local vegetables. We contribute to community regeneration, provide volunteering opportunities and supported employment. These opportunities include outlet assistants,

promotions, workshops, events, packing, IT, admin and driving. We provide a number of other services including fruit and veg sales, a healthy catering service, soup, local bread,

lunches in our Mosstodloch shop and local Veg Box orders.

In August 2011 CFM set up a pilot emergency food box system consisting of fresh produce for people made homeless, at risk of being made homeless, and/or in financial difficulty due to

delayed access to benefits or unforeseen circumstances. Due to the growing need of crisis assistance in Moray we have now established the Moray Foodbank under the

support of the Trussell Trust. The food boxes can be accessed by a referral system with support agencies who work with people in crisis.

People can donate to the foodbank with non-

perishable donations or money to help assist with fresh produce in the food packs. People can donate items to the food bank by going along to specific locations in Moray and placing

them into the box on display. As we have a commitment to healthy eating we do request that items are not high in salt, sugar or saturated fat, but help to contribute to a

balanced food intake. For example:

UHT milk

Breakfast cereal Long life fruit juice

Tinned beans, fruit in juice, vegetables (not in salt or sugar) Dried pasta and rice

Jars of pasta sauce Tinned tomatoes

The drop off points include Elgin Youth Café, Re-boot (Forres), REAP (Keith), Dufftown Health Centre, Moray Coast Health Centre and many local churches.

People can use and support our services throughout Moray including our Lossiemouth outlet based at Moray Coast Health Centre every Monday between 12.00 – 12.30. You

can also put in an order to collect from the

outlet or have it delivered to your door on the way.

During an informal chat with Maggie Sabiston, a member of the Marie Curie Committee (Lossiemouth), about fundraising, we decided to gather together a small committee and embark upon

the challenge of organising a Christmas Concert!!! First thought - a choir leader about which there was no doubt; we approached Ann Dartnall who thankfully agreed to lead and organise the choir and music etc.

The committee then set about the rest of the evening’s programme, which we’re now very happy with. As well as the 30 strong choir, ‘Ann’s Winter Warblers’, we have a sketch and songs by The Melody Makers, a fantastic flower demonstration with a twist (by Iain Allan), handbell ringing and community carol singing. Wine and shortbread will be served

at the interval, during which there’ll be an opportunity to purchase raffle tickets. All in all a packed programme.

All proceeds will go to the local Marie Curie organisation, and we hope the evening will be a sell out, enabling us to raise as much money as possible for this wonderful service.

The concert date is Wednesday 11 December, 7pm, in Lossiemouth Town Hall.

Tickets are £5 each and can be purchased from Nov 1 from:

Pam on 812911, Caroline on 814069, Iain on 07980 122718 or Maggie on 813018.

Getting Paid for Heating Your Home

A Dream Come True

Some readers of The Lossie Local may remember an article with the headline ‘Micro-renewables – Why bother?’ two years

ago. Well, the time has now come. Last month the UK government announced details of the long awaited Renewable Heat Incentive. In a nutshell, if you heat your

home with a renewable heat source, i.e. heat pump, biomass boiler and/or solar thermal panels, you can get regular payments per unit of energy for the next seven years.

Unsurprisingly there are a few conditions attached to any payments, the most important being that you need to get a Green Deal assessor to inspect your home and to

write a report.

Some of these renewable installations can be quite expensive. The UK government has therefore come up with a Green Deal financing scheme that’s paid back from the

savings you get from the installation. The Scottish government, being more ambitious with their energy saving targets, have introduced an interest free loan scheme

to help you pay for renewable energy installations, called the “Home Energy Scotland Renewables Loan Scheme”. In summary, provided you meet certain

conditions, you can get paid hundreds of pounds per year for the next seven years through the Renewable Heat Incentive AND you can get cheap or even interest free

finance to cover the bulk of the installation cost.

For more information you can go to the website of the Energy Saving Trust Scotland www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/scotland,

talk to our renewable energy experts at

New Shingles Vaccination Programme From September of this year all people aged 70 will be offered vaccination against Shingles as part of the NHS vaccination programme. The aim is to vaccinate all people over the age of 70 in a structured catch up programme, this year all people aged 70 and aged 79 will be called for vaccination.

Shingles is an infection of a nerve and the skin around it which is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox, varicella-zoster. Most people have chickenpox in childhood, but after the illness has gone, the virus remains in the nervous system. The immune system (the body’s natural defence system) keeps the virus in check, but later in life it can be reactivated and cause shingles. This can happen at any

time but is more likely after other illnesses or during times of stress.

It’s not possible to prevent shingles from occurring, but it has been shown that vaccination against it can reduce your chances of developing the condition by about 40%. Due to the fact that the illness is more common in older people, and their risk of developing complications such as prolonged pain is higher, the government is recommending that all people are offered the vaccine when they reach age 70.

Annual Flu Vaccination Programme The National Flu Vaccination Programme will be widely advertised again this year. Vaccination prevents certain categories of flu which are particularly dangerous in the elderly and in patients with chronic disease.

For the first time children aged 2-3 will be offered a flu vaccination and the Practice will call these children individually. If anyone is concerned about vaccinations in children please contact the Health Visitor. The Practice Annual Flu Clinics are planned for Thursday 3 October in the Town Hall (with free tea and coffee), Thursday 10 October in Burghead and Hopeman surgeries and Saturday 19 October in the Lossiemouth Surgery. These days are always well attended and look busy but patients are seen very quickly as there are a team of nurses working to ensure no-one waits more than 15 minutes. We would encourage anyone eligible for the flu jab this year to attend one of these clinics rather than a routine appointment; this helps the surgery provide their normal service throughout a very busy period.

TH E FACT OF T HE M ATT ER IS — Bicycling is at present very much to the front, and the

proprietors of The Bulger are well aware that the merits of the sport as an invigorating exercise deserve recognition. For the purpose of stimulating the enthusiasm in the locality, The Bulger is offering a

silver medal for competition amongst residents of Lossiemouth, Stotfield, Branderburgh, and district. Particulars of the competition are inserted in the sports column of this issue.

Outdoor games receive pretty good attention from the

youth of Lossiemouth, but we feel that a great deal more might be done in that way. As a means to give life to summer sports, and as a source of recreation and entertainment in the winter time, we would

suggest the formation of a Gymnastic and Athletic Club. A Gymnasium would, without doubt, prove a great boon to the young men, and it could easily be got if they would only organise. The necessary

apparatus could be secured for a few pounds, and there are several halls, in more or less disuse, available for the purpose. Organisation alone is required to bring a scheme of this kind to a practical

issue. Half-a-dozen energetic young men would carry all Lossiemouth with them on such a manly venture.

LO SSIE N OTES AN D N EWS The herring fishing yesterday (Tuesday) was fair - an

average of 10 crans for forty boats, and prices ruled from 8s to 16s per cran for best qualities.

Herr Dobler, at the request of several gentlemen, is to give an exhibition of his sleight-of-hand feats in the Station Hotel tonight.

In the published results of the recent examination in

musical knowledge Lossiemouth students are well in evidence. Of the thirty-seven candidates who came forward for the whole county ten hailed from Lossiemouth, and the position they obtained in the

list reflects the highest honour on them and their teachers.

A police court was held here on Monday - the Provost on the bench. Hugh Grant and his spouse, vagrants,

were charged with breach of the peace. They pled guilty, and the Provost imposed a penalty of £1, with

the alternative of fourteen days’ imprisonment. They went to prison. Thomas Higgins, another vagrant, pled guilty to a similar charge, and was fined 5s or seven days’ imprisonment. He followed suit. The

next case was William Rennie, labourer, Allan Lane, who pled guilty to having committed a breach of the peace, along with Simon Ross, and paid a fine of 10s. Simon Ross, a Glasgow mason, failed to appear, and

forfeited a bail of 20s.

On Saturday last Sir William and Lady Cumming gave their annual treat to the children on their estates at Gordonstown (sic). This fete always marks a red-letter day in the pleasures of young people, and is

looked forward to with eager hope. Over four hundred children assembled within the grounds, and a large company of gentry and tenants were also present. The proceedings commenced most

appropriately with a feast of milk and buns, which was partaken of by the children at tables beneath the overspreading trees. Sports and games of all kinds were immediately entered upon with the utmost

heartiness.

TH E “ EAR N HO LM” Dear Mr Editor, -I am surprised that the “Earnholm” does not call at Lossiemouth on her way back to Aberdeen. There can be no doubt that many, in these

months of fine weather, would prefer to go south by sea rather than by rail. Is Mr Crombie not letting slip an opportunity of adding to the revenue of his company? It might be worthwile, at any rate, making

the experiment.

A Visitor writes to us—“I was glad to see from last

week’s Bulger that the Burgh Commissioners intend to place seats at different parts of the Links. These seats will be welcome to those who are not now so young as they have been. They are, it is said, to be

made of iron, but I would urgently beseech the Commissioners to see that the most important part of these seats to be constructed of wood. A seat entirely of iron is an abomination.

Another extract from The Bulger, a ‘Summer Journal for Lossie, Elgin & Neighbourhood’. Produced in 1894; a joint collaboration between the Chemist James Peterkin and James Ramsay MacDonald.
