Dear Neighbours,

Here’s the 21st issue of The Lossie Local - just in

time for Christmas. Please join me in thanking the

Senior Citizen’s Bus Trust Walking Group for

delivering your magazine. I hope the weather will

have been kind to them. Our 10% profit donation

was given to the Lossiemouth Millennium

Association and their Christmas Lights Appeal.

Once again they’ve done another fantastic job in

lighting up our town.

The front cover shot was kindly provided by Lossie

resident Alison Mitchell following an appeal for

photos on the ‘We Heart Moray’ Facebook page.

Read all about the group on page 34. Alison has no

photography training and uses a basic digital

camera - I think you’ll agree she’s done a great job.

Continuing with the theme of photography you can

read about Clare Mansell’s ‘50 Faces of Moray’

project on page 14. Windswept Brewing give us an

update on page 24, and you can find out about

Waste Watcher’s forthcoming move to Lossie on

page 12. And there are loads of other interesting

articles too so make sure you read cover to cover!

Remember if you have any community or charity

events needing to be publicised in the Spring please

let me know. The next issue will be due for delivery

week beginning 4 March. And if you have any

suggestions on how the magazine can be improved

for 2013 I’m always open to suggestions so feel free

to get in touch.

I think you’ll recognise most of the advertisers this

issue. Please consider using their services if at all

possible to keep our money within the local area.

The only new business to point out is Trevor at

Artisan Services (page 33). He’s done a great job

fixing our shed door so be sure to give him a call

and get all those outstanding odd jobs done before

the end of the year.

So all that remains to be said is have a very

enjoyable Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous

New Year.

Chia truly is a superfood all-star. Wrapped in a tiny package the size of a poppy seed, this petite nutrient-packed powerhouse has been used by humans since at least 3500 BC when the Aztecs relied on it to keep their civilization healthy. Chia is loaded with protein and (very unusual for a plant-based food) contains all 8 essential amino acids – the building blocks important for bones, muscles, cartilage, skin and blood. Because Chia seeds are full of vitamins and minerals, which keep the body well-nourished and energetic, it runs at peak efficiency without experiencing deficiency-caused cravings, which in turn can lead to poor food choices and overeating.

Chia seeds boast impressive amounts of antioxidants, including the phytonutrients quercetin, kaempferol, myricetin and caffeic acid. These antioxidants help ward off everything from cancer to common viral illnesses. But they also keep chia fresh and prevent rancidity. Unlike highly perishable flax, chia‟s antioxidant profile allows it to remain shelf-stable for years. Other advantages over flax seeds are no hard shell, which make flax very difficult to digest, and no fishy taste. Research has also shown that chia seeds contain an incredible amount of omega-3 fatty acids – 4 grams per 2 tablespoon serving – more than any other known plant. Omega-3 reduces inflammation and helps lower the risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease, cancer and arthritis. They are also important for memory and a stable mood.

Chia seeds can be sprinkled over cereals, salads and vegetables; stirred into porridge, smoothies, yoghurt or a glass of water/juice; baked into pancakes, flapjacks or oatcakes ... The list is endless. Start off with 1 – 2 teaspoons and work up to 2 tablespoons daily.

The advantages are endless; reduced food cravings, more energy, less inflammation/pain in the body, improved digestive health and regular bowel movements, better skin and hair. Chia seeds can also be used as part of your

beauty regime. Try one of the following facial masks:

Moisturizing Chia-Avocado Mask

½ avocado, stone removed 1 tablespoon ground chia seeds 1 drop of lavender essential oil (optional)

Scoop avocado flesh from the peel into a medium bowl. Add chia seeds and essential oil and mash mixture into a smooth paste.

Super Fast Face Pack

2 tablespoons ground chia seeds 2 tablespoons aloe gel, plain yogurt, rose water or your favourite facial toner or moisturizer

Mix ingredients in a medium bowl, stirring until combined.

Place mask/pack on clean facial skin and allow to sit for 15 to 30 minutes. Remove with a washcloth that has been moistened in warm water.

Isaiah 9 v 6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government

shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor,

The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace

John 1 v 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld

his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth

There is no real debate today among historians and theologians that about 2,000

years ago in the area that is now Israel, there lived and died a man called Jesus.

What happened after His death is where the debate begins.

At MGF we believe that Jesus, as God in the flesh, rose from the dead and ascended

to the Father where He now sits at His right hand. He is sitting because His work is

finished. He has dealt with everything that held you back from having a relationship

with Father God.

This is a relationship that you can start or begin again today!

Let MGF show you the real Jesus. Come to a church with a difference.

Imagine sitting in front of a cosy stove. Last edition‟s article about the installation of wood burning stoves was so popular that we‟ve been asked to write a bit more about them. If you‟ve looked at stoves in the past you‟ll have come across terms like Defra approved, smoke control zones, multi-fuel, wood burning, radiant and convection stoves. Put simply, there are no smoke control zones anywhere near Moray so there‟s no need to get a stove that‟s Defra approved for use in such zone. There are a number of solid fuels that can be used in a stove. They have different burn characteristics (i.e. burn hotter, longer or cleaner than others), varying cost and different requirements on the stove. Wood burns best sitting directly on a bed of ash; coal on the other hand needs to rest on a grate so that air can flow through it from underneath. With most stove models the multi-fuel versions come with a grate, whereas the wood-burning versions don‟t. This is why the multi-fuel versions are usually £50 - £150 more expensive.

The typical cast iron stoves are radiant stoves, meaning that they radiate the heat. The closer to the stove you are the more you feel it, but in larger rooms there won‟t be much heat reaching the opposite side of the room. Convection stoves on the other hand are designed to encourage air to be warmed in the

sides of the stove. This air then rises and moves around in the room, resulting in a more even heat distribution, particularly in larger rooms. Most convection stoves are made from steel sheets rather than cast iron.

Now to the style of stove. There are traditional and contemporary stoves, free-standing and inset stoves, with and without window, and even with windows on three sides. In the words of Cilla Black, „The choice is all yours‟.

One word of caution though; you get what you pay for. Even though stoves have been around for a very long time and are a fairly simple technology, there are a few things that can go wrong. The single biggest issue with cheap stoves is that they can warp and even develop cracks in the body. We‟ve seen doors falling off during operation because the hinges were poorly made. We all love a bargain, but a stove is not a piece of clothing that you can discard and buy a new one every few months. Most stoves made in Europe are of good quality, and a local installer can give you all the advice you need. Talking about installers you may want to pay The Great Little Stove Company a visit - they have just opened up a new showroom in Forres (ad page 31).

If you have any questions about stoves, previous articles or any renewable technologies, do get in touch with us.

Waste Watchers Can Recycling Training Enterprise, based in Buckie, is undertaking a major expansion to take on plastic bottle recycling in partnership with the Moray Council. This means they will be re-locating to larger premises at Coulardbank Road in Lossiemouth, and everyone is really looking forward to the new experience.

Jim Craig comments, “First and foremost I would like to congratulate the trainees and staff at Waste Watchers, as this is recognition by Moray Council of the excellent service, hard work, commitment and endless enthusiasm of all those who work at Waste Watchers. After 18 months of worrying uncertainty, during which there was the risk of the service being put out to competitive tender and being lost from Moray, we are over the moon that the Council has taken the progressive step of finding a way to ensure that Waste Watchers is able to continue to work in partnership with the Council, and most importantly to expand and develop work opportunities for people with

learning disabilities.”

He continues, “I have been very impressed about the positive

attitude everyone has taken about the move to Lossiemouth, recognising it as the best option in all the circumstances, and of course our workforce from Elgin are welcoming an extra half hour in bed!” Speaking with a group of people who work at Waste Watchers, Steven (who travels from Keith), along with William and Lynne, all said they were happy to be going to the new premises at Lossiemouth. Louise (from Buckie) said, “I‟m happy to be going to Lossiemouth as it‟s bigger, and I‟m looking forward to recycling plastic bottles as well as cans.” Kevin (who also lives in Buckie) commented, “I am delighted to be going to

Lossie – I think it‟ll be better.” John (from Elgin) is looking forward to being able to cycle to work in the future, and has already had a few trial runs. The Waste Watchers trainees have all expressed their enthusiasm for taking on the new experience of recycling plastic bottles and “wanting to try new things because we are good at it.”

Jim adds “We‟re confident that all Departments will work together to ensure a smooth transition. Moray Council are to be praised for taking this progressive step that makes the case for negotiating a Service Level Agreement rather than competitively tendering the contract. This decision recognises the social value of Waste Watchers, its unique history in that it was set up by a group of people with learning disabilities themselves in response to a lack of real work opportunities, and recognising our 12 year track record on delivering an excellent service and „Best Value for Moray‟”. Anyone who would like to get in touch can do so on 01542 839324 or email [email protected]. Volunteers are always welcome – recycling provides some very interesting opportunities!

So “Look out Lossiemouth because here we come!” is the message from the very enthusiastic people who work at Waste Watchers. There are plans for a „grand opening‟, and we hope we can welcome lots of local people to give more insight into what we do and let them know what becomes of their cans and plastic bottles after they go in their purple bin (roll-out scheduled throughout Moray to start 1 March 13).

50 Faces Of Moray is a project I started in the summer to document the lives and passions of 50 individuals who live or work in the county of Moray. My background is in journalism, but over the last few years photography has become the focus of my work. When we moved to Lossie it seemed natural to take on a project that enabled me to get under the skin of the local area whilst allowing me to try new things photographically.

I‟m currently about a third of the way through the project, and the clock is ticking as we‟re posted again in the spring. I know I have to average one portrait a week if I‟m to complete it before we leave, but I‟m confident I‟ll rise to the challenge!

Finding the first few subjects for the project was fairly difficult, as I very much wanted to push myself out of the forces community, but after some great publicity from the We Heart Moray group on facebook I had a rush of people volunteering to take part.

Now I find almost everyone I photograph recommends someone else, so in a way it‟s developed a momentum of its own. I‟ve met some fascinating people with great stories who have helped me appreciate the local community. I‟ve found myself driving through the countryside listening to country music with a wild west re-enactor, and travelling several miles across Moray to photograph someone who I later discovered used to work with a friend of mine in London!

Of course it has not all been a breeze. Sometimes I absolutely curse it when shoots disrupt family plans, or weather conditions don‟t play ball and we have to go ahead anyway. My husband is well used to dealing with me being grumpy because the perfect portrait I had envisaged didn‟t go according to plan. In fact I‟ve taken to describing the whole thing as a form of photographic flagellation!

I‟m hoping to hit the halfway mark before Christmas, and when I return to Moray in the New Year I‟ve got a few people on my wish-list I want to track down (you can see the wish list on my website), and I‟m going to need to twist the Station Commander‟s arm and see if he‟ll let me shoot something interesting on the base. But I must crack on, I‟ve got a policeman, a beautician and a painter I need to talk to whilst the baby‟s asleep….

As I write to you, I am gladdened by the fact that with the return of 5 Force

Protection Wing, the majority of RAF Lossiemouth‟s personnel are now back where they belong, at home, ready for Christmas. Of course, we always have about 70 or so people deployed at any one time and we will be very much thinking of them over the festive period, but at least our major units are back. And what a homecoming! The tremendous turnout as the RAF Regiment team marched through the streets of Elgin, accompanied by a flypast and all to the tunes of the Pipes and Drums, and of course tumultuous applause, was more than enough to warm the heart on that cold day, and a real sign of the close bond between the community and your base at RAF Lossiemouth. Our Force Protection Wing had a long and tough tour, defended Camp Bastion against attack and suffered several casualties so they are now on well-earned leave.

The most major air activity happened in October, when some 70 aircraft and 450 personnel descended to participate in Exercises here. Thank you to everyone who put up with the additional noise during this time – you can be assured that we did everything possible to keep it to a minimum and that the training value of having these people at RAF Lossiemouth was immense. It also helped continue to raise the profile of our important Station and there can be no harm there! Over Remembrance, we joined the community in Glasgow, Elgin, Dallachy and at Lossiemouth to commemorate those fallen or damaged over the years; particular poignancy this year and our friends from XV(Reserve) Squadron were very much in our thoughts. The new Station magazine returns to an old title – „The Lossie Lighthouse‟, and in order to move with the times and make sure it has the widest possible distribution we have also put it online, so please have a look at www.raf.mod.uk/raflossiemouth (link to Station Magazine on right hand side) and you‟ll find out in detail what our various units get up to – you will probably be surprised! Finally, may I take the opportunity to thank our entire community for the outstanding support and integration that we continue to enjoy, and wish you all a very Merry Christmas and continuing, increasing prosperity for Moray in 2013. If you'd like to know more about everything RAF Lossiemouth and its people are up to - please follow us at http://facebook.com/raflossiemouth and on our Twitter account: @RAF_Lossiemouth.

R.E.S.C.U.E. Quite often we have a visiting preacher at the Gospel Hall and one Sunday a frequent visitor took the service. He reminisced of many happy holidays on our coast; first with his parents then in recent years with his wife. He also spoke about the lovely beaches around Moray and the many interesting historic sites to visit. He even told us that although he lives many miles away, he was delighted when the news came out that RAF Lossiemouth was to be spared. He appreciated the impact this would otherwise have had on our community. In his message that evening, he told us about the many times he had seen the yellow Search and Rescue helicopter leaving Lossiemouth to go on a rescue mission. He related that to the search and rescue mission that God provided when he sent his son to die for us at the cross on Calvary nearly 2000 years ago.

Like all good preachers he gave us an acrostic to help us remember his message and we want to share this with you. In Romans 3v23 we are told, “all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God”. To receive eternal live all have to React to that statement and do something about it. The answer is found in a Saviour who is Eager to save and willingly died on the cross so that our sins could be forgiven. In Romans 6v23 we read that “the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life”, and this is our route to Salvation. We need to accept the Call as described in Romans 10v13;

“whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved”. We have to Understand that this is the only way we can have our sins forgiven and we must believe in the Lord Jesus so that “we should not perish but have everlasting life” (John3v16). There is no Exception to this Godly rescue mission. All can be saved but only those who put their faith and trust in the Lord Jesus will be saved. As we near the end of this eventful year for Lossiemouth are you able to say you have been rescued and have put your faith and trust in the one and only Saviour who can promise eternal life. I hope you‟ll take the time to think about this serious matter and remember this little message any time you see the rescue helicopter heading out to save lives. With our very best wishes for

the Festive Season.

Super excited to be back writing in this festive edition of the Lossie Local. So as we prepare our Christmas shopping lists, plan Christmas dinner and decide on our outfits, it‟s only a matter of time before we start setting our New Year Resolutions.

The New Year is the most common time of year for setting goals and making resolutions, but the only thing tougher than starting a new exercise regime is sticking with it. Just like trying a quick fix diet, resolutions often don‟t last. In fact most targets set are often broken by the end of January. So what needs to happen? Strategies need to be put in place to make sure a broken resolution is soooo 2012, and that 2013 is your fittest year yet.

Here at GladiatorFit I can provide a variety

of training options, including Boot Camps and Group Fitness sessions, to keep you on track throughout 2013 (check out my website for full details). Lets look at some

key strategies that may just be the success to your new healthy lifestyle.

STRATEGY 1: Evaluate 2012.

First and foremost look at the positives! Did you make any changes in 2012 towards a healthier lifestyle and increased fitness regime? Maybe you chose to cut back on fatty foods and decided to opt for healthy food options when eating out? Once you have done this, make a list of the things you feel you could improve on. This is the first step to making your 2013 resolutions.

STRATEGY 2: Set Realistic Goals.

This is Key! Thinking big and aiming high is fantastic. But you want to set a goal that you think is achievable and maintainable, where you can see the improvement and

progression. This will keep you highly motivated. The last thing you want is to be deflated by your new lifestyle choices. So the 5k race needs to come before the marathon!

STRATEGY 3: Partner in crime.

Chat with your friends. They‟re all probably thinking the same as you. Knowing you‟re meeting someone for a session after work or at the weekend will help, especially if you‟ve had a busy week and feeling tired. You‟re more than likely to stick with your workout schedule when you know you‟re meeting someone. It also gives you someone to celebrate with when you achieve targets!

STRATEGY 4: Constant Reminders.

Reminding yourself what you‟re hoping to achieve will help with willpower. I find „post its‟ are a great aid. Rather than just having your aims written down in a notebook or diary, put them up around your house so that you‟re constantly reminding yourself of your targets.

STRATEGY 5: Start a training Diary.

You maybe asking yourself, are these not just for professional athletes? Well the answer to that is no. Anyone who works out should think about keeping a diary of what they do. The diary can also record your starting weight, body measurements, fitness levels and so on. You will find your diary motivating and very useful. It will let you look back at exercises you have done. When you start to feel your body changing shape you can look back and see which exercises have worked best for you. You can also record PBs (personal bests). Maybe when you started you could only do 10 press ups, but now you can do 20! It‟s such a small training aid but leads to great results.

STRATEGY 6: Ditch the Diet.

The Problem with saying “I‟m on a diet” is that it‟s just too temporary. You need to learn about healthy food options. Following a diet on and off can lead to yo yo dieting. This will lead to the pounds creeping back on. As I said in the introduction, quick fix diets are not maintainable. What you need is structure and planning. Making sure meals and snacks are planned in advance is vital when embarking on a new healthy lifestyle. Most importantly you need a well-balanced diet.

So once the festivities are over for another year, and the Christmas tree is boxed away, it‟s time to look at 2013 and ask yourself, „Could this be my fittest year yet?‟ The answer to that is yes!

Have a wonderful Christmas guys and a

fantastic New Year. Kathryn x

Things are starting to take shape at Lossiemouth‟s new Windswept Brewing Co. Building work started in the Coulardbank Industrial Estate in mid-October, and the

brewery is expected to be running by the end of November. Previously known as West Beach Brewery, a legal challenge led to the recent change of name. The boys from Windswept hope to be brewing casks and bottles of handcrafted local ale in time for Christmas.

The first beer to be launched will be Windswept Blonde, a tasty 4% pale ale combining American hops with British grains. Years of brewing practice have allowed the brewing team to refine their recipes and you can expect to see the „Wolf‟, a strong dark 6% Scottish Ale, following soon after. Co-founders Alisdair Read and Nigel Tiddy say they are both really excited about bringing their dreams to life by building a craft micro-brewery. Alisdair said, “We‟ve put years of work into this, built 2 other test breweries and tasted a lot of beer. The improvement in taste from the mass produced factory stuff is marked.”

The latest member to join the team is former Lossiemouth High School pupil Adam Gray. Adam gained a degree in Astrophysics before completing his Masters in Brewing and Distilling. As the „Technical Brewer‟, Adam will be using his expertise in the laboratory to ensure the finest beer is produced.

News and progress of the brewery can be found on Facebook and Twitter. If you‟d like to hear more about beer and brewing in person, the boys from Windswept Brewing will be giving a talk in Lossiemouth Library on Thursday 29th Nov at 7.30pm.

THE DEFEAT AT DORNOCH

A party of farm servants were sauntering down to

Lossiemouth last Wednesday night when they were

informed by a passer-by of the result of the match at

Dornoch. “Twa hunner an‟thirty tae wan!” echoed

the foremost, and with his hand over his mouth and

his body bent almost double, he retired to the dyke,

laughing noiselessly. About the same time, as one of

the twenty-eight was going home, pale from the sea

and lost holes, he was accosted by two of the citizens

who had just heard the woeful tale. “Ye cannae play

gowff at a‟,” said one. The other added, “Aw, ye

needna try it.” And the rout at Dornoch is still the

talk of the town. The game of golf is so new with us

that the people do not as yet understand the object

with which players go forth to war. The idea

prevails that the Moray golfers crossed the firth in

the expectation of glory. Nothing could be further

from the truth. They went to Dornoch to enjoy a

day. A “round” was in their programme, but what

mainly attracted the twenty-eight was the sail and the

fame of the links of Dornoch. They were under no

illusion as to the relative strength of the two Clubs.

Well they knew that the Dornoch men were better

players, and would win the match. The surprise was

not the defeat, but the rout; and yet, all things

considered, there is little to wonder at in the result,

amazing as it looks. The Moray Club is of recent

origin—capable, indeed, of furnishing a dozen good

men, but likely to be weak with a team of twenty-

eight. Many of those who played on Wednesday

never took part in a match before, and were included

in the team not because they were great players, but

because they were to hand for the expedition. There

is no doubt that, after the sea voyage, the long and

wearisome tramp to the course rather took it out of

the visitors. But the main fact is that the Dornoch

men are among the finest golfers in the land. They

have a magnificient course, and, being far from the

madding crowd, they make golf the chief occupation

of their leisure hours. Only once have they been

beaten. The Moray men have come home with the

highest admiration of their opponents, not only as

players but as gentlemen.

LOSSIE NOTES AND NEWS It will be seen by advertisement that Herr Dobler is

to appear at the Town Hall Friday and Saturday first.

The small line boats were, with the exception of

Friday, regularly at sea during last week, and the

catch was a little under the average—104 boxes for

nine boats. Prices-small haddocks, 4s, 8s per box.

The time fixed for the annual school feast, given by

Lady Gordon Cumming at Gordonstoun, to the

children on the estates, has been changed. It is to be

held on Saturday first. This is in every way better

than September.

September was a landmark month for one of the staff at the MCMP. Susan McSheffrey, the Nurse Manager, celebrated 25 years working in the Practice, making her the longest serving member of staff. Susan has seen many changes in the Practice over the years, including a complete change in doctors and progression to our new, purpose-built surgery from the old premises on Clifton Road. She has also seen enormous changes in the role of the Practice Nurse, using her skills and versatility to lead the Practice in developing the nursing team over the years.

Susan qualified in Aberdeen, initially as a General Nurse and then as Midwife. She moved back to Elgin in the 1970s to work in the maternity unit before starting with the Practice in 1987. Her role has changed significantly as Practice Nurses have taken on more responsibilities, and, as well as leading the nurse team, she has developed specialist skills in diabetes, heart disease and travel health. She now takes a lead role in the routine care of diabetic patients and, since becoming a nurse prescriber, also runs a minor illness clinic. As one of the longest serving and well-respected Practice Nurses in Moray, she has helped and supported an enormous number of people and has become a well-known face to many.

The Practice and community are extremely fortunate to have benefited from her skills and enthusiasm, and look forward to working with her for a few more years. She is pictured here receiving a gift

from Dr Duncan Green during the recent flu clinic at the Town Hall.

The Practice has also run our annual flu campaign over the last few weeks, and are indebted to the help given by members of the Patient Participation Group who helped at both the Town Hall and at the surgery. 704 people were vaccinated in the Town Hall, with an extra 287 given at the weekend surgery clinic. Grateful thanks to everyone who helped out. Vaccinations are still available to eligible people by contacting the surgery.

Finally, the staff at the Moray Coast Medical

Practice wish you all a very happy and healthy

Christmas and 2013.

We Heart Moray is a Facebook page dedicated to telling everyone just what is so good about Moray. Set up during the turbulent basing decision times at RAF

Lossiemouth, the purpose of We Heart Moray was to shine a positive light on Moray, focusing on tourism and local businesses to hopefully help it thrive during difficult times. Since then the page has continued to grow and has a great community feel to it, with members sharing experiences, businesses posting information and everyone sharing photographs of the amazing Moray scenery.

Recently, We Heart Moray decided it was time to start showcasing local businesses, big and small, so they launched the “Wee” Heart Moray Awards. These awards are designed to be a light hearted way of sharing local shopping, eating or customer experiences, and for businesses to be promoted for the hard work they do. A category is announced on the page and nominations are put forward by the page members. Once nominations are in, voting can begin. The first “Wee” Heart Moray Award category was for the best Cullen Skink in Moray. Nominations flooded in and it was soon clear that there was plenty of delicious options in the area, and everyone was keen to spread the word! Voting was narrowed down to six contenders, three of which were in Lossiemouth! The Beach Bar, Harbour Lights and Covesea Café seemed very popular, as were MacKenzie & Cruickshanks in Forres, Taste of Speyside in Dufftown and Fresh on Spey in

Aberlour. Competition was fierce but it soon became clear that Janice and her team at Covesea Café were clear favourites, and were thrilled to win the first “Wee” Heart Moray Award and are very proud of their certificate.

To help celebrate Moray, We Heart Moray

has commissioned unique pin badges

which are offered as prizes, but are also

available to buy at W P Mcleman butcher

in Lossiemouth and Olive Tree Chocolate

in Elgin. A reward scheme is being set up

to run alongside the badges, where local

businesses offer discounts to We Heart

Moray badge wearers. Seven Moray

businesses have already joined, including

Covesea Café, Macbeth Butchers and

Olive Tree Chocolate. It‟s hoped the

scheme will continue to grow and will

encourage Moray people to try out more of

their local products and services.

Lossiemouth opened their autumn

schedule with a home game against Nairn County, who had a new look about them

after losing players to Brora Rangers over the summer. Those who remained wasted

no time in carving apart Lossie, however, and the Wee County were two goals ahead

without much in the way of

opposition. An own goal from ex-Lossie player

Michael Morrison offered Lossie hope but Nairn

added a third to secure the

points on a comfortable afternoon.

Lossie showed signs of improvement in a

home game against Keith, a side who have recently struggled on trips to Grant Park.

Things began slowly, however, and Lossie were two goals down in the opening fifteen

minutes. Tony Ross fired home to reduce the deficit at the interval before Keith

inched ahead again. Scott Miller scored for

Lossie to give his side hope but the hosts failed to make the most of a rickety Keith

defence and when the Maroons scored a fourth the points were secure.

Lossiemouth finally landed their first league

win of the season with a home victory over fellow strugglers Strathspey Thistle. Always

a tight contest, this season’s fixture was no

different and the score remained blank until

twenty minutes to go when Tony Ross fired

home what turned out to be the only goal of the

game, earning Lossie

their first points of the season and moving

them off the bottom of the table.

The following week Lossiemouth headed east for a game against Shire cracks

Deveronvale, now managed by ex-Lossie

chief Charlie Charlesworth. A fixture which regularly featured plenty of action, this

year’s tie was no exception, and goals from Colin Charlesworth either side of half time

gave the Coasters the lead against his

dad’s new side, but the hosts roared back to level with time

to spare, and a penalty with less

than ten minutes to go saw Lossie

go home empty-

handed after a promising start.

Two promising performances were undone

in the first twenty minutes of the next game, away to Fraserburgh. Sloppy

defending saw Lossie a goal down in the

“As a local tradesman I have found it invaluable to advertise in this publication. It appears to me that many potential customers hold on to their copies of The Lossie Local, and refer

to the information in it for a much longer period than they would, say, a newspaper.” (Jeffrey Lee Roofing Services 815343)

“Just to say I was in Lossiemouth on holiday recently and found several past copies of your magazine in my self-catering accommodation. I thought the contents were brilliant and

gave me lots of insight into the town and its local businesses and services.” (email received from holidaymaker)

The Lossie Local - Why Advertise?

About The Lossie Local

The Lossie Local was established in May 2008, home produced by a Lossie resident, with the aim of disseminating community information and providing an affordable way for local businesses to promote themselves.

Community Focus

All of the community news, events and editorials included in the magazine is done so free of charge, a great way for local organisations to promote themselves and normally only available

at great expense in other publications. Local groups deliver the magazine for a £300 donation, and 10% of profits each issue are given to local charities.

Affordable Advertising

The Lossie Local has deliberately kept prices low so local businesses can afford to advertise. Where else can you get a quarter page advert from as little as £26!

It’s Win Win All Round!

Charity & community groups get great exposure and local businesses get effective, affordable advertising.

“I’m always impressed with the quality and content of The Lossie Local. There’s actually something to read about within it which is rare nowadays! Our company has definitely

benefited from advertising.” (C Mackay MD, CM Design 540020)
