P&D ENGINEERINGThe products on offer have to be good but it’s thepeople and their response to customer needs thatdetermine the success of a farm machinery dealership.

So it’s little wonder that Mike Pullin and hiscolleagues at P&D Engineering have a keenfollowing among farmers and contractors throughoutGlos and Worcs and into neighbouring counties.

“We worked hard in the early days to earn a goodreputation for servicing and repairing machinery,”says Mike. “In more recent years, we’ve been moreactive supplying new machines in the area, especiallysince taking on McCormick tractors and Merlotelehandlers.”

Major franchises now also include Vicon grassequipment, Farr ATVs, Reco ploughs and powerharrows, Köckerling cultivators and drills, BvL dietfeeders, and sheep and cattle handling systems fromModulamb and Ritchie.

Anthony Wilkes heads up sales, Jason Middlecotemanages the parts department, and service managerDave Brown has a fleet of five well-equipped vans, and the workshops back at base, for the five-manteam of trained technicians to tackle anything fromroutine servicing and pre-season preparation toemergency in-field repairs

McCORMICK TRACTORSFarmers wanting a down-to-earth tractorwith proven reliability and sufficienttechnology without excessive complexityneed look no further than the McCormickrange.

“The McCormick machines make a lot of sense from allperspectives,” says P&D Engineering salesman, Anthony Wilkes.“From the 22-54hp X10 compacts that make great scraper andstable/paddock tractors to the new X70 models with 150-232hpfrom their six-cylinder engines.”

Dairy farmers who liked the McCormick CX tractor with itsDoncaster lineage are now coming to like the X60 that replacedeven more: “It’s built tougher, has more power and betterfeatures,” says Anthony. “But there’s a familiarity about theroomy cab that’s comforting – and it’s even more comfortablethan before.”

There are some attractive deals going for the mid-range MCfour-cylinder and MTX six-cylinder tractors. These stalwarts ofthe McCormick range share the same transmission with four-speed powershift and demand-responsive hydraulics. “For a no-nonsense tractor they take a lot of beating,” says Anthony.

At the top of the range, the new five-model McCormick X70replaces the current XTX and TTX with the same uniquetransmission having eight-speed powershift for ultimate speedflexibility. But cab upgrades and new-spec engines with morepower and torque – but also better fuel economy – make thenewcomer an attractive package.

“Add in the flexible finance and extended break-downinsurance options available, and it’s fair to say we can matchanyone’s requirements with the McCormick range,” Anthonyconcludes.

With many farmers seeking greater fuel efficiency whenmowing, Vicon has introduced three new plain discmowers for the 2013 season that deliver outstanding

cutting quality from a low power requirement.Badged the Extra 117, Extra 122 and Extra 124, the new

entry-level plain disc mowers offer working widths of 1.7m,2.2m and 2.4m respectively, and replace the CM1700, CM2200and CM2400 models.

The new 100 Series benefits from a fully-welded cutting beddesign that uses the extremely successful three-bladed cuttingdisc that delivers impressive cutting quality and encouragesfaster regrowth from grass stubbles.

Fabricated from two C-channels welded together forincreased rigidity, the mower bed also offers increased oilcapacity to deliver cooler running and much more efficientlubrication, which adds to durability.

Each disc’s hub and gear assembly is bolted in through thetop of the bed, with intermediate gears slid into place viaremovable access plates at each end of the mower bed.

All three mowers feature a highly effective spring-loadedbreak-away system to provide protection against in-fieldobstacles, while hydraulic headland lift enables the mower tobe raised without having to move

the tractor link arms.In addition, the 100 Series uses vertical folding to give a

compact, neat transport solution. All these design improvements add up to a lower power

requirement, with the Extra 100 Series needing a tractor of just50hp to operate, reflecting the fuel efficiency available.

As part of Vicon’s engineering developments, every mowerbed produced is pressure tested and run up to full operatingspeed to ensure that the machine operates exactly as it isdesigned to. In addition, noise testing is carried out to ensure itmeets the company’s own tough standards for low noise levels, and this is achieved with a revised gear cutting process thatensures Vicon disc mowers are now quieter than ever.

During each test, every mower bed is also checked to ensureit does not need an excessive amount of power to operate, confirming low frictional losses.

On completion of testing, every mower bed is given its ownserial number, allowing any failures to be traced back tocomponent supply and manufacture.

This is all part of parent company Kverneland Group’scommitment to reinvest in production techniques andmanufacturing facilities to raise quality standards even higher.Vicon’s Extra 100 Series plain disc mowers also come with atwo-year warranty package.

With many innovations and patents to its name, MerloSpA claims to be the World Leader in Handler Design, and Merlo UK is proud to be importing and

supporting Merlo telehandlers throughout the UK andRepublic of Ireland

Merlo UK offer 14 dedicated Turbofarmer models withengine powers ranging from 102-140HP, lift heights from 7mto 10m and capacities of up toa massive 4.1 tonnes. Merlo isalso the only farm handler inthe world to incorporate cabsuspension.

Merlo also offers 8compact models which areonly 2m wide, yet have 6mand 8.5m lift heights andcapacities of up to 3.2 tonne.Recent additions to thecompact range include the1.8m wide telehandler, P25.6,which has already proved tobe a success in the poultryworld. Together with thelow profile version, recentlylaunched at Lamma in January –offering the lowest cab in its class at just 1.77m in height – yetstill maintaining a full sized cab for driver comfort.

Innovation has lead Merlo to design and manufacture theunique Multifarmer which combines the handling ability of athree tonne telehandler with the features of a 120HP tractorand three-point linkage.

CONTROLPERFORMANCE AND SAFETY

P&D ENGINEERING EDITORIAL FEATURE

Merlo is the world’s leading manufacturer in handlerdesign with hydrostatic transmission. Hydrostatictransmission, which is standard on all Merlo models, is

easy to use, offers precision in any demanding situation andof course has instant breaking.

The Merlo Group design and build over 90% of themachines components in house. This gives the company thefreedom to offer two axles – either fixed, which offers superbground clearance or a side-shift axle which means there is noloss in stability or capacity but gives the operator thecapability to side shift the load vertically.

Fixed axle models also offer the option of BoomSuspension (BSS), which reduces the movement of the boomwhen travelling. The side-shift axle can be fitted with fullActive Suspension (EAS), which gives even better protectionagainst road shocks.

Safety remains the prime Merlo objective and theinnovative and patented M CDC (Merlo Dynamic LoadControl) system, which is now standard on all Turbofarmers, takes a totally new approach to load control. M CDCidentifies the weight and position of the payload, comparesboth to a virtual ‘load chart’ and calculates the ‘stabilityindex’. As the stability index rises, audio/visual alarms and afinal hydraulic lock act to prevent a forward overturn.

In January 2013, Merlo Dynamic Load Control was featuredthe Farmer’s Guardian Hot 50 award. In December 2012, MCDC had also won the highly acclaimed innovation award atInternational Show, EIMA proving Merlo goes beyondEN15000 requirements for safety and control.
