THE YEAR IN REVIEWOnce again the Ballito Photo Club has had a fantastic year. Our standard of photography is truly excellent and we have welcomed many great and extremely talented photographers to the club!

At our monthly meetings we have covered a wide variety of different photographic genre and have hopefully learnt a little along the way... Each and every guest speaker has been so keen and willing to share their knowledge and expertise with our members and for this I am very grateful. They have inspired us each month with their skill and patiently answered our questions.

We got the year off to an amazing start with award winning international photo journalist Louis Kleynhans joining us at the January meeting. Rory Baker and Geoff Feldon provided members with the valuable opportunity to learn more about the Judging Process the following month. Next we were visited by Pieter Venter from the Westville Camera Club for an informal and educational chat about his photographic journey. Graham Curruthers then joined us sharing some of his tips on Portraiture. Next up was our very own Theo Landman who hosted a Practical Lighting Workshop with “Oupa” kindly sitting as model. We were so honoured to welcome Fine Art Photographer Willem Oets to the June Ballito Photo Club meeting. Willem allowed us a small glimpse of the world through his lens... The visit from artist Jane Bedford opened our eyes to dazzling and brilliant use of colour. Members were then given the opportunity to showcase some of their recent shoots at our club “Show and Tell”. We introduced “Movie Night”, complete with popcorn! and even hosted a Photo Club “Book Club” evening. To end the year master Avian Photographer Gerrit Lotz joined us at the November meeting and we were left speechless by his incredible images!

The monthly excursion is always a highlight on our Club Calendar full of fun, friendship and photos. Once again it was a busy year with excursions to the Durban Harbour at Night and the Moyo Pier at Sunrise. A stand out was the full day Township Tour which took us into the heart of KwaMashu where we enjoyed a Shishenyama lunch at a shebeen! Local really was lekker this year with many of our most successful outings taking place on our doorstep. Members were even guaranteed a COM after attending the Motocross excursion!!! The Ballito Pro Finals never fails to draw a huge crowd of photographers from near and far and us local togs made sure we were down on the beach to capture the action! We practised our street photography with a walking tour of Warwick Triangle and a few of us braved the dodgy weather and joined

the World Wide Photo Walk at Durbans Point Precinct. From the wildlife at Tala to the creepy crawlies at Ndlondlo Reptile Park our cameras have kept just kept on clicking....

Our members have once again really pushed their boundaries and tackled the Set Subject Assignment each month with great enthusiasm. From Food Shots to Attractive Architecture to Street Scenes, the Human Body and Zen. We have tried something odd and told a few stories, we have added a splash of colour and seen the beauty in trees and eyes. The topics have been varied but our members have proved they are most versatile and adaptable and able to shoot any genre. We have had some really fantastic entries this year and had some really deserving set subject winners! It is always great to see the many different interpretations of each theme. Well done and thank you to everyone for your dedication and for raising to the challenge! I hope that you find the new 2017 Set Subject assignments both inspirational and stimulating and that you are ready ready to tackle the list next year. The new list really is challenging and I certainly am looking forward to seeing your submissions.

A highlight of this year had to be doing so well in the KZN Regional Inter Club Competition where we placed 4th in the province. This year members proudly brought home a few COMs and the cherry on top was that members of The Ballito Photo Club also won the two top spots for best image overall in BOTH the Nature and Open Categories (there are no other categories by the by). Such an incredible achievement for such a small club and very well deserved! We really did have some great entries this year...

I truly believe the Ballito Photo Club is going places. We have an absolutely amazing group of talented, knowledgeable photographers, judges and mentors to learn from. Without fail I am in awe of the incredible images which have been created by our members each month. Thank you to each and every one of you for the time and effort put into creating such beautiful imagery. Thank you all for your enthusiasm this year... Thank you all for being a part of the ballito Photo Club and for your amazing images!

Be inspired!

ballitoPhoto ClubSET SUBJECTS 2017

JAN 10 Patterns and Symetry Use symmetry and/or pattern, natural or man-made, to create an eye catching composition. Pay particular attention to lines, repetition, colour combinations, texture and contrast.

FEB 14 Facial Expressions Capture human character and emotion using facial expression. ie. happy, sad, surprised, curious, confused, afraid... Images may be head and shoulders or full figure of a living person(s) depicting the subject’s character or emotion at that moment. A likeness, personality, and mood of a living subject (human only) where that subject is dominant in the image. Portraiture is not restricted to head and shoulders and may include just part of the face, a back view or a full length study.

MAR 14 Perfect Imperfections Find the beauty in imperfection! There is beauty in everything if captured correctly. Sometimes the things that we value the most may not be perfect, but they are beautiful.

APR 11 Social Awareness Pick a cause... raise awareness for a social issue or concern by appealling to the viewers emotions. Pick a cause... raise awareness for a social issue or concern by appealing to the viewers emotions. The image must convey a clear message about a social theme you are passionate about. If your image appeared in the local newspaper with the title of the image as the headline, what would it read “Save the Rhino”, “No to abuse”,”Every precious drop” Examples of possible themes include endangered animals, poaching, child abuse, unemployment, water conservation, state of education, healthcare issues etc.

MAY 9 Deck of Cards Use your imagination! The image must contain cards or aspects of the cards (real or fictitious). Individual cards, a decks of cards, a house of cards, the characters on the cards, etc. JUNE 13 View from Above We view the world from a standing position. Give the viewer a different perspective on things. Subject must be shot from above. How far above you are, is open to interpretation. Standing over an insect, or 5 storeys above in a building or an aerial shot are all options.

JULY 11 Song Title Select a song and illustrate it visually. Your photograph must tell the story. No wording may be added onto the image itself. Your image title should be the name of the song. Eg, “Country Roads”. This will help the judge find the connection with the image.

AUG 8 urban Scenes We are fortunate to be living near one of the vibrant cities in South Africa. Capture a scene from any city that reveals something about its culture and its people. This could include people at work/play, transport, street vendors, street performers, monuments and landmarks. Emphasis will be on urbanisation and modern cities.

SEPT 12 After Dark What really happens after dark? Capture the night, the people, the places, the colours, the lights... This is all about low light. The world looks different at night. This must come out in your image. Consider longer shutter speeds and light trails. After dark images also have the ability to create a different mood. Think of candlelight, moonlight and stars.

OCT 10 A Small World Your interpretation of the theme. Think creatively and tell a story through your image. Try and showcase images that are not easily seen with the naked eye. Zoom in close to portions of large objects and reveal some of the details that may be missed. There is also the option of taking life size images and making them appear bigger/ smaller relative to the scene (Think, “Alice in wonderland” style).

NOV 14 SA Scapes Depict the raw beauty of our country, South Africa in a landscape shot. Scapes may be natural or man-made: Cityscape, Seascape, Nightscape, Streetscape, Urbanscape. No people however are allowed in the landscape. Landscapes are about capturing detail from front to back. Pay careful attention to this in your composition and shots. Don’t be afraid to experiment with wide angle lenses etc.

Please Note: All images entered into the Set Subject must be current! No shots taken prior to 6 December 2016 may be entered into the Set Subject Monthly Competition.
