You’ll note in the last statistic above that we

said “work-related” smartphones. These are

phones that are used in connection with work—

or phone calls, email, or to access sensitive cor-

porate inormation—but not necessarily issued

and managed at the corporate level. The ma-

jority o SMBs trend toward this solution, and

that doesn’t consider the personal devices em-

ployees may occasionally use to make work-re-

lated calls or store the number o a prospect they

meet at the grocery store. The Symantec survey

ound that 63% o SMBs allow employees to use

the smartphone o their choice or work-related

activities; in 57% o responses, the employeepurchased the phone, as well.

Any phones outside corporate control, and

even some that are inside it, are vulnerable to

attack. I you have not locked down text or

multimedia messaging (i.e., SMS or MMS) and

application download, or i you lack stringent

password protection at the corporate level, you

need on-device security. Note that most o the

products we discuss here also work with tablet

devices running smartphone OSes. However,

some unctions require SMS capabilities that

tablets may lack.
