Safe Harbor Community Outreach Center
Type: Solo Studio ProjectTime Frame: 4 weeksSize: 3500 sq ftLocation: Seneca, South Carolina
This project began with research into domestic violence, specifically in South Carolina. South Carolina has recently risen to number one in the country for domestic abuse. The project was to create an outreach center to both help the community as well as give Safe Harbor central office space and meeting rooms. We were also given the task of creating a program or space that could be used to combat or defend against Domestic abuse. I asked two questions when coming up with my design statement: What if a public facade could act of a report card for the status of domestic abuse in a community? Where would you need to start to begin reversing the social taboo surrounding domestic violence? When domestic violence affects twice as many women (1 in 4) as breast cancer (1 in 8) isn’t it time to stop defending againt it and start attacking it?
+REVERSING THE NORM
SOCIAL EXPERIMENT
My extra program was a local, social campaign against domestic violence. Using precedents like LIVESTRONG and the Wounded Warrior Foundation, I studied social campaigns and what differentiat-ed a successful campaign. I found that in most cases, even if the idea behind the campaign was solid, having a bold and cohesive branding for the campaign was important. Because the purpose of the campaign is domestic violence awareness, I chose bold colors and graphics for the logos.

2. THREE FLOORS
The building is 45’ tall from floor to ceiling, allowing three floors

4. SUBTRACTION
Each floor has the alleyway subtract-ed from it to give the public spaces a vertical connection. The structural supports are left in spanning the gap.
3. INDOOR ALLEYWAY
The longitudinal circulation is provid-ed by an 8’ alleyway that is reflected
on each floor.

4. PRIVATE PROGRAM
The programs that require more privacy (conference rooms, multipurpose room, restrooms) are pushed to the rear of the building, allowing the public spaces to re-cieve natural light from the glass facade.
5. LIGHT WELLS
Light wells are added to increase natural light in the private spaces on the second
two floors. (Refer to Section B)
6. BACKSIDE, UTILITY SIDE
The backend is set aside to provide vertical circulation and restrooms.

FACADE REPORT
The facade is made up of glass panels that allow light into the interior space. A series of vertical wires run vertically along the face of the building. These wires hold blocks that act as memorials for some-one who has been affected by domestic violence. As rain falls it will run down the front of the building and slowly push the blocks down. After the block has made it down the facade the family could come pick it up. The facade would act as a visual report card for the community to current effect of domestic violence in the communtiy.

Safe Harbor campus
Type: Group Studio ProjectTime Frame: 4 weeksSize: 15,000 sq ftLocation: Seneca, South Carolina
Partners: Paul Mosher (main campus) Alex Armstrong (topo, modeler) Brianne Burdy (housing design)
This was a follow up project to the previous outreach center we had done for Safe Harbor. Now our job was to make a campus for the battered women to be rehabilated in. Our main goal was to study how we could use the land to our advantage (there is almost a 100 foot elevation change on the site) and how could we make a high security area in a public space without having to add fences.

I was initially hired to create a new map for parking services. The internship gave me a lot of expirience with programs that i had little or no prior expirience with. At the end of the summer I had finished the map as well as made illustrations of many buildings on campus to be used as campaign pieces for the 2013-2014 school year.
