Page 2: Pathum Egodawatta Portfolio

Hi, I am Pathum Egodawatta and I study graphic design at Academy of Design, Colombo. This is my portfolio of 1st Year design projects for BA(Hons) Graphic Design programme.

I believe that good design is never accidental. And I believe that every project needs a certain level of research to get the designer on the right track. I personally think that in Sri Lanka, that the research part of design is usually the least focussed area in a project.

As a student at the Academy of Design, in addition to developing my skills as a designer, I like to focus on the importance of research within the context of design. And explore how a good research can help in maintaining unity and consistency in a project.

Sri Lanka traditionally and historically has had a very appealing set of design practices. It is very interesting to explore how those practices can be adapted to fit the current design arena and I hope to study and use these practices as a design student. In the future I wish to establish myself as a result oriented design professional with strong attention to research and practicality.

Re-branding of Colombo Public Libraryfor Corporate Identity, 1st year - 1st semester

I was required to chose an existing business entity and develop an identity redesign. The final submission included the basic elements of a Corporate identity manual.

Although the Colombo Public Library did not have an obvious distinct visual identity, I could identify the values that are already established surrounding the library.

The brand developed around the observation that the library functions more as a place for people to meet, hangout and share their thoughts. It’s not just a library.

SMOKEthe typefacefor Typography, 1st year - 2nd semester

Smoke is a typeface evolved from the dynamic and unpredictable nature of smoke it self. The look, feel and usage of the typeface may be more suited for using in titles and headings.

A promotional poster was designed to showcase the origins and the feeling of the typeface.

For the unit Idea Generation I had to create several photo narrations and photographs on given topics and themes.

As an experiment all the photographs were taken using a Nokia N73 mobile phone.

The Book of Happinessfor Editorial Design, 1st year - 2nd semester

For this unit the Principles of design should be presented as a special edition book. The examples should be presented in a simple understandable way such that they are connected with a chosen theme.

The theme selected to explore within the boundaries of this project was the impression created in the mind of an audience by the use and abuse of design principles.

The title – The Book of Happiness for a world of crappy design– was derived from the basic notion that the correct applications of design principles can make people feel “happy”.

Page 14: Pathum Egodawatta Portfolio

The best medium a person can use to express a feeling is face. The face can express feelings in finer detail. Faces decorated with manually constructed collage art were used to support the narrative flow (from sadness to happiness) within the book. Basic shapes combined with sensitive and contrasting color selection builds up an image of a face which is interesting and pleasing to the eye. Each face expresses a distinct and evident feeling. Furthermore the faces also act as examples of usage of good design principles.
