MUSIC

Gathering: All Creatures of Our God and King #537

Psalm: Psalm 128: May the Lord Bless Us p. 218

Offertory: Prayer of St. Francis #523.

Communion: Behold the Lamb #339

Organ:

Our Prelude at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Masses is entitled ”My Song of Today/I Want To Walk as a Child of the

Light.” Dr. Kane has composed music for a prayer by St. Therese de Lisieux (whose Feast Day we celebrated on

October 1st) and paired it with the song "I Want To Walk as a Child of the Light."

"My Song of Today"

Oh! How I love Thee, Jesus! My soul aspires to Thee

And yet for one day only my simple prayer I pray!

Come reign within my heart, smile tenderly on me

Today, dear Lord, today!

But if I dare take thought of what the morrow brings

It fills my fickle heart with dreary, dull dismay

I crave, indeed, my God, my cross and sufferings

But only for today!

O sweetest Star of Heaven! O Virgin, spotless, blest

Shining with Jesus’ light, guiding to Him my way!

O Mother! Beneath thy veil let my tired spirit rest

For this brief passing day!

Soon shall I fly afar among the holy choirs

Then shall be mine the joy that never knows decay

And then my lips shall sing, to heaven’s angelic lyres

The eternal, glad today!

Esas

oraciones deben ayudarnos a penetrar el misterio

de un acontecimiento gozoso, luminoso, doloroso,

o glorioso de la vida de Jesucristo. Pero, una vez

que estamos en presencia del misterio, debemos

enfocamos y contemplar a Dios.

Men, Women, and God’s Creative Plan

On the Sistine Chapel’s ceiling, inspired by today’s passage from the first reading, Michelangelo painted the

amazing moment when God creates woman out of the side of man. He depicts her standing beside the

slumbering Adam, almost arguing with God. Perhaps it represents the eternal discussion about the relationship of

man and woman. Or perhaps it recalls the perpetual scene of a man asleep on the couch while the woman

wonders, “What’s wrong with him?” The good thing is that Eve asks the only one who has the answer: God

himself.

In fact, Jesus does the same thing in Mark’s Gospel. When the Pharisees

question him on divorce, Jesus refers them to God’s original plan, “But from the

beginning of creationP” (10:6). Jesus finds the answer to this challenging question

by looking back at God’s creative plan for humanity. God has given man and woman

to one another as a mutual gift. It is not good that man should be alone, but only God

in eternity definitively satisfies the original loneliness found in everyone’s heart.

When spousal love breaks down, we would be wise to follow Jesus’ advice and

refer to God’s original plan. Saint John Paul II did that when, in contemplating

married love, he dedicated the first years of his Wednesday audiences to reflect on the first three chapters of

Genesis.

Those God has placed alongside us, especially our spouses, are meant to wonderfully (but only partially)

satisfy that deep longing to be totally accompanied. Mutual self-giving and self-sacrifice in love is the solution to

our inherent isolation and loneliness.

KEEP CHRIST IN

CHRISTMAS

Sending religious Christmas cards is a form of

evangelization. The Knights of Columbus have

sold over 10 million religious Christmas cards

through the “Keep Christ in Christmas” program. More

importantly, they raised more than $5 million for CHARITY.

This is a really great evangelization opportunity for

every parishioner of Saint Gregory the Great. In addition,

your participation will benefit needy people.

The Knights of Columbus will have “Keep Christ in

Christmas” cards available after all the Masses this

weekend and the weekend of October 13/14, 20/21, 27/28

and November 3/4.

CATHOLIC BOOK CLUB

Due to the hurricane forecast the

September Catholic Book Club meeting had to

be re-scheduled. The new season of The

Catholic Book Club begins on Friday, October

12, at St. Gregory the Great Catholic School.

The meeting is from 9:30 a.m. -11:00 a.m. All are

welcome!

The October selection is Jason Evert’s “Saint John

Paul the Great: His Five Loves” (Totus Tuus Press,

distributed by Ignatius Press). This summer our parish

youth group did a book study on this very readable

volume. It really has appeal to all ages. After a close

look at the pope’s life, the book focuses on the ways in

which John Paul II exhibited his own love for young

people, human love, the Blessed Sacrament, the Virgin

Mary, and the Cross. The author brings the Saint to life

as he shares dramatic episodes from the future pope’s

youth and show how his love for God, scholarship, and

the arts formed him into the holy man who occupied a

world stage.

A COMMENTARY (on page 3 of THE DIOCESAN MISCELLANY, 09.13.18)

I read the Diocesan Catholic bi-weekly P every page! This (page 3) got my attention in addition to our Bishop’s

letter (page 5) on the recent happenings in clergy behavior. Well done, Bishop! Thank you!

Page 3 is about ‘polite conversation’. For one who has grown out of a speech impediment, I am more and more

conscious of how folks indulge in a mutual exchange of ideas (conversation!). Compare the following P A & B:

Conversation A: One of the parties is ‘in a hurry’. In general, such persons are always in a hurry because they do

not want the listener to think and respond. He/she expects his/her opinion to be the final one. The non-verbal

behavior is rude, disrespectful and insulting. The presumption is that he/she is heard even though the conversation

started in one room and the persons are now separated by walls/doors, etc. The tone of speaking is soft and fast

P unmindful of whether the listener actually heard what was said. In brief: there is NO CLARITY to say the least.

Conversation B: The two are in comfortable distance of one another, the speaker & listener are making eye

contact, the tone is audible (presuming one is not audio-impaired like me!) and their non-verbal behavior

demonstrates genuine interest and mutual respect.

Now tell me, my friends, you have experienced both kinds of conversations. Many spouses in our community have

brought this to my attention. They love each other but are negatively affected by the manner in which they

communicate. All I can recommend is that you try to be a conversant in ‘B’. And P if both parties try P the world is

a better place!

The article referred to makes mention of teaching our young people to make every conversation in ‘B’ style based

on the presumption that it is a social grace which signifies, above all else, RESPECT FOR THE DIGNITY OF THE

OTHER! Period.

Do me a favor P if you find me to be a conversant in ‘A’, please bring it to my attention (privately I plead!) so that I

can help make this world a better place. I remember a saying I heard as a young person: “I shall only pass through

this world but once. If there is any good that I can do to help a fellow-human being, let me do it NOW. Let me not

put it off or neglect it because I shall never pass through this world again!”

Signing off with love,

Fr. Derrick
