ST. JAMES THE APOSTLE CATHOLIC CHURCH MISSION STATEMENT

Rooted in the Catholic Faith, in order to build up the reign of God, the mission of St. James the Apostle Catholic Church is to live out the message of Jesus Christ by worshipping God by serving the world.

Reminder: If you would like to use your debit/credit card for your weekly offering, please stop by the church office. You can also set up automatic deposits from your bank to the church.

Please consider including your St. James family when planning your will.

THE RESPONSIBILITY OF OUR FAITH

Today is a day simply to ponder the fact that in baptism we were claimed by God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The first reading from Deuteronomy prompts us to fix in our hearts the truth that God is the Lord of both heaven and earth and there is no other god. Saint Paul reminds us that, because we received the Spirit of adoption in baptism, we are now children of God. In the Gospel Jesus charges us with the re-sponsibility to make other disciples. These realities make today’s solemnity a day of praise, adoration, and responsibility. It is a fitting day to thank God for the absolutely free gift of faith that we were given in bap-tism. It is also a day to ask God for strength to take on the responsibility of sharing that faith with others. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Why Register In the Church Many people attend Mass here at our church, but are not registered parishioners. It is important to be registered and use your offering enve-lopes so that if you ever request a letter, whether it’s for being a godparent, sponsor, marriage, confirmation, tax statement or any other purpose, we can check our records and see that you attend Mass here. This would also benefit you if you would like to have your child enrolled in next year’s Reli-gious Education Program. If you are not registered in the church, we can-not issue or sign any type of letter stating that you are a member of the parish, even if you attend Mass here. If you would like to register and re-ceive offering envelopes, you must complete our registration form. You may also use the parishioner’s updated form (green) located on the church lobby shelf for any changes to your address, email or phone number. If you have any questions, please contact the office.

Pastor’s Message

Respectfulness in the Sanctuary and the Vestibule Please refrain from talking during Mass. Also the vestibule is an extension of the Sanctuary when Mass is going on. There are parishioners and little ones in the vestibule who want to participate in the Mass but need to sit in the vestibule. If there is a need to discuss other matters, please do so outside. Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. James,

NEW BEGINNINGS The installation of our new Bishop is definitely a new beginning for all of us. It was an absolutely wonderful experience of the gathering of the universal Roman Catholic Church to which we all belong. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, was represented by Archbishop Christo-phe Pierre, the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States of America, who resides in Washington, D.C. The Roman Catholic Church in the United States was represented by two cardinals and several bishops who showed their support by their presence. And then, the parishes and ministries of the Diocese of Las Vegas were represented in full force as over 2,000 souls packed the Shrine of the Most Holy Re-deemer. It was a real example of the universality of the Church which showed the reality that we’re not just a parish family here in Las Ve-gas, but we are a vibrant part of the world-wide Roman Catholic Church!

So, many have been asking, “How do we address our new bishop?” Well, he would like to be addressed on a personal level as “Bishop Thomas,” just like we have always addressed Bishop Pepe. A more formal greeting would be “Your Excellency.”

In the Eucharistic Prayer we always refer to our Pope and Bishop by their first names. So, Bishop Thomas has asked us priests to refer to him as “George Leo” when we pray for him in the Eucharistic Prayer.

So, what about Bishop Pepe? Is he still a bishop? Now he is our “Bishop Emeritus.” The word “Emeritus” is used to designate some-one as retired, but still retaining his title. Bishop Pepe is, and always will be, a Bishop. Therefore, we will continue to refer to him as Bishop Pepe.

As we move forward with this new beginning, let us continue to pray for our new Bishop George Leo Thomas and our Bishop Emeritus Joseph Anthony Pepe. We are truly blessed by them and their minis-tries among us.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR FIRST EUCHARIST CLASS OF 2018 Last Sunday found five of our young parishioners so happy to enjoy their first encounter with Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. As is always the case, I am so inspired by the simple and true faith of these young ones as they approach to receive the Body and Blood of Christ. It’s a reminder to all of us to cherish what sometimes can become a rou-tine. God loves each one of us unconditionally, and as we share so intimately in God’s presence in the Eucharist, may we remember to let that love shine forth in all we say and do.

Many thanks to Ms. Arsenia Eagan, our Director of Faith Formation, and her loyal catechists Ms Phyllis Rose and Mrs. Martine O’Neil. God continues to work through your dedicated lives! These children are proof of it! Peace always, Fr. James Michael Jankowski Pastor

Bishop Thomas invites you to join in the celebration of the ordination to priesthood of transitional deacon Miguel Cor-ral. The celebration will take place Thursday May 31, be-ginning at 6pm, at Guardian Angel Cathedral. There will be a light reception following the ordination mass, in Anderson Hall. Deacon Miguel is from the parish of St. Bridget, and has also served in other parishes in the Diocese of Las Ve-gas throughout his journey toward priesthood, including St. Anne, St. Christopher, St. Francis of Assisi and St. Eliza-beth Ann Seton; he also served at Catholic Charities. Fr. Miguel's first mass following his ordination will be Fri-day June 1, at 5pm at St. Anne. Fr. Miguel will also be presiding in English at St. Francis of Assisi - Mass of Thanksgiving, Sunday, June 3rd at 11:30 am. All are welcome!

Catholic Stewardship Appeal (CSA)

St. James the Apostle’s 2018 assessment is $37,342.00. We received pledges in the amount of $24,670 from 55 parishion-ers and have payments of $11,695. We are encouraging our 300 registered households to participate in making this a suc-cessful “Love your neighbor as yourself” appeal.

“No gift is too small and no gift is too large!” Thank you for your prayers and continuous support in meet-ing these pledges and our obligation to the Diocese.
