Pastor Notes

T he events surrounding the results of the Pennsylvania Grand Jury have certainly been uppermost in many

people’s thoughts. Since other clergy gave their statements, I will also give one of my own. Like all of you, I am deeply hurt for the children who suffered the life-long effects of being abused. When a child is beaten, bullied or verbally abused, the effects linger on even when help is received. This is particularly true of sexual abuse. Unlike most of you, I lived in Pennsylvania when some of this was going on, not as a priest or religious, but as a person in the pews, as you are. So I do understand your feeling of outrage that such nonsense would go on at the hands of people who work on behalf of the Church, whether lay or religious. Like you, I had to make a choice: leave the Church because I was disappointed at the actions of a few of its members or work at seeing the good that lay beneath this layer of muck. I chose the latter course. While I did know of some of the clergy who perpetrated these horrible crimes, these priests were not at St. Gabriel’s on the north side where I grew up. Nor did I experience anything of this sort, thankfully. I made my decision to stay with the Church because the crimes described in the indictment are not who the church really is. The Church is greater than all of this. Founded by Christ Himself, the Church in her sacraments and her teaching reflect the love of Christ, even though her leaders may make tragic mistakes at times. It is this that we must focus on; our faith is greater than all these crimes, God will bring good from this, even if it is to make sure such a travesty never happens again. We at Assumption are committed to providing a safe environment for you children. Let us pray for the Church that she may heal from these unfortunate events and for those who have sinned so mortally that they may repent.

A S S C Once again, we are collecting basic school supply items for distribution at the Thea Bowman Center and for our children in Haiti. Bins will be in the back of the church through Labor Day weekend. Basic items such as pens, rulers, solar calculators, maps, folders, glue sticks, paper, colored pencils, notebooks, and quadrille type composition books may be placed in bins in back of church.

Soccer balls, ball pumps, and jump ropes are real treasurers. Your thoughtful donation is always appreciated!!

Many blessings. Members of Hands and Hearts with Haiti and

Human Care Committees.

L / M The new schedules are in the Sacristy for you to pick up.

Lord Hear Our Prayers For the following parishioners, family members or friends that are ill.

Page 4 Church of the Assumption August 26, 2018

D ’ C “…We will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15 “Does it please you to serve the Lord?” Joshua asked at Shechem. “Decide today.” And the people answered: “Far be it from us to forsake the Lord for the service of other gods,” going on to name the deeds the Lord had done for them. Centuries later, after hearing Jesus call himself bread to be eaten, descendants of those at Shechem said: “This saying is hard, who can accept it?” And they “no longer accompanied him.” Jesus then asked the Twelve if they would leave, too. Simon answered for all: “We have come to believe and are convinced you are the Holy One of God.” People find some of Jesus’ teachings very hard to accept. Some of the disciples mentioned in today’s Gos-pel are no exception. They could not accept what Jesus had just said about Himself as the bread of life, as they left. We often hear, “I’m not religious, but I am very spiritual.” Either the per-son has seen and rejected a life of faith, or has not understood what a life of faith requires and is seeking meaning and emotional comfort elsewhere. We bear some responsibility for this. The best way for people to recognize Jesus is through our example. Every day we face options to live our faith openly: to respect life in all its forms, to treat our neighbor as we would like to be treat-ed, to be honest and hard-working, to be loyal and kind, to take care of our resources, to show care and concern for children, the hungry, the sick and the elderly, and to share our blessings. Bracelets inscribed with the letters WWJD? (What Would Jesus Do?) have become very popular. Perhaps a better way to say this is, “What Would Jesus Have ME Do?” The responsibility is not on Jesus but on us. Like Joshua in today’s first reading, “Decide today whom you will serve…we will serve the Lord. ”Are you walking the walk or just talking the talk?

30th Annual Appalachian* Collection will support the following local charitable organization this year

Society of St. Vincent de Paul – Diocese of Cleveland This year, the Appalachian Collection will support people in need

residing in the Lorain, Ohio area. The Knights of Columbus of Our Lady of Charity Council 14406 would appreciate donations of household goods, including small appliances, cooking utensils, dishes, sheets, blankets, towels, all clothing and toys. Monetary donations will also be accepted and are greatly appreciated. Re-

ceipts will be provided for all donations. “When considering your donation, please keep in mind that broken

items or items that are harshly used are more of a burden to the Collection than a blessing.”

A good rule of thumb defining a worthy donation - - donate only items that you would donate to your neighbor and they would use.

A complete list of items needed (and not needed) can be found at www.kofc14406.org/Collection. Please review the list to determine if the item you plan on donating

is needed. If you wish to learn more about the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, their website is www.svdpcle.org Please bring your donations to the 53’ trailer in the St. Basil church

parking lot on: Saturday, September 22nd 8:00am until 6:00pm

Unfortunately we are unable to pick donations up - items must be brought to the above collection point.

Many volunteers are needed to help with this project. If you are able to help in any capacity, please sign up at www.kofc14406.org/Collection . You will be glad you took the time.

If you have further questions, please contact Ken Peters at 216-849-1434.

R E Mrs. Barbara Tomusko, Directory of Religious Education August – dedicated to Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary The children of the parish have begun a new school year this week. May they also “grow in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man.” Luke 2:52 New beginnings can be difficult. Whether it is a new school year or a new job, we can take comfort and direction in the Words of Scripture – to be unafraid and face all circumstances, knowing that God is with us at every turn with the sure hope that His Spirit will guide us into all knowledge and everything we desire for our highest good. It is important to have a plan to grow in wisdom and knowledge and to schedule quiet time to center ourselves, find our path, and then proceed with confi-dence. As the prophet Jeremiah stated, “You will seek me and you will find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Jeremi-ah 29:13 God’s plan for us is for our happiness – trust the plan! The Office of Religious Education is looking for Catechists for the Children’s Liturgy Ministry on Sunday Mornings and for classroom helpers for PSR on Monday evenings. Persons who would like to share their faith with our young parishioners are encouraged to join this Ministry. Training is available - and the benefits are out of this world! Call for more information – 440-526-6690. PSR begins Sept 10 this year for children in Grades 1 through 8. Registration Forms are available in the Rectory Of-fice or online at www.coabvm.org, or contact the Office of Reli-gious Education at 440-526-6690 to have one sent to you via email.

Dear Assumption Parishioners and Families,

I send you greetings from the Academy Staff and myself. I am writing this to you on Tuesday the 21st. We start school

on Wednesday the 22nd, filled with faith, hope and vibrancy. The Faculty met as one, for prayers and our Opening Faculty meeting. We spent time organizing, planning, and getting re-acquainted with each other. Besides myself, we have two other new teachers joining our Faculty this year. Mrs. Padilla is our 4th Grade Teacher. Mrs. Hanna will be teaching Art, and Tech-nology. We welcome them into our Assumption family. Our schedule for the week included a special 1st day greeting at the front doors complete with photos, a ‘Welcome back to school’ assembly, a staggered start by Kindergarten, and our first school Mass on Friday. Our first week was 3 days. This week of the 27th we have a full week. Activities include; a visit from our Band Director, Mrs. DiCarlo with Gr. 4, a STREAM In-service for teachers, a PRE-K parent meeting, a Gr 8 ‘Got Prayer Retreat’ to Camp Christopher, and Friday Mass. It was very nice meeting so many Parishioners and Academy parents at the Parish Picnic. It was a great turn-out. I enjoyed the hospitality and food. Thanks to all who volunteered and supported the picnic. Please join us for our school Masses Friday morning. Continue to pray for the Academy and we in turn will pray for you. “Make your light shine, so that others will see the good that you do

and will praise your Father in Heaven.” Matthew 5:16 Peace be with you, Mr. William DiBacco, Assumption Academy Principal

A R C B C will be available for sale at the bakery table at the parish picnic.

COLLECT BLESSINGS FOR HEAVEN Please consider volunteering for the ONE DAY 30th Annual

Appalachian* Collection on Saturday September 22, in the St. Basil the Great parking lot.

To register for a time slot and view photos from last year’s event, please visit www.kofc14406.org/Collection and complete the scheduling sheet. All that is involved is removing donations from cars and placing them in the 53’ long trailers. It is as simple and easy as that. All help is welcome. Young, old, and in-between. This is a perfect event if you or your organization is looking for service hours. If you don’t need service hours, consider helping any-way – it will aid your entry into heaven. Take the time, you will not regret it. Some statistics from last year… Last year’s collection brought 80 volunteers together contrib-uting 246 volunteer hours during the single day event. 400 ve-hicles were off loaded and two 53’ trailers were filled complete-ly. Please call Ken Peters at 216-849-1434 with questions – hope to see you there.

Please consider helping - - we make it fun. May God bless you and your family.
