To our current District GovernorRamona Allen-Ramsey, PastDistinguised and Outstanding DistrictGovernors, Past District Governors, OIRepresentative Paula Reyling, thespeaker of the hour, head table guess, tomy wife Rita, and fellow Optimists, good evening.

A good friend once told me "If youhave occasion to speak to a group ofpeople there are three important thingsyou need to do. . . Be brief, Be sincere, and Be done". I will be taking myfriends advice this evening!

In the introduction of CharlesDickens’ Classic “A Tale of TwoCities”, Dickens states that “It was thebest of times, it was the worst oftimes”...

His introduction is relevant today.

while not ignoring the cause. “What is ignored, does NOTneces-

sarily go away.”"So, yes, note that there is a prob-

lem. Acknowledge that the problem isthere. Next, devise a game plan for over-coming it — in other words, determinethe solution. "

While several clubs are functioningjust fine there are several common prob-lems across most of the District that weneed to focus on.

1. We need focus on declining mem-bership--The best way to attract others isfor you to be a good Club member. WeBaptist have a saying, "always be on yourbest behavior because you may be theonly bible some people read." If you set agood example, offer an opportunity forclub members to give back to their com-munity, others will want to join and be apart of what you do.

Ask someone to join our organiza-tion. My mother told me that "theanswer is always no until you ask." Overforty-one years ago, I asked Rita tomarry me. What would have happened ifI didn't ask? Ask! When are asking, youshould especially focus on the youngergeneration because they are the lifeblood of our organization. And whenyou get them, offer programs that areappealing to them and put them to work!"It's All About The Kids."

2. We need focus on promoting ourclubs and activities. I've heard many ofyou say that "We are the best keptsecret." A lot of Clubs need to increasevisability in their communities. Whereyou live, there are people who don'tknow that our organization exists! Weneed to do a better job of promoting our-selves and our programs, i.e.:

Tri-Star SportsChildhood CancerEssay ContestsOratorical ContestsCommunication Contest for the

Death and Hard of Hearing (CCDHH)Youth AppreciationYouth Safety, just to name a fewBased on the number of contestants

who have been participating in our localand District contests--we haven't been

doing an effective job promoting ourprograms.

One way a club can increase visual-ly is to partner with the schools in theircommunity to determine their needs."It's All About The Kids."

3. We need focus on re-energizingour membership. We need to re-energizeour membership base so we can servicemore kids. It's ok to meet, eat and havefun at our meetings but we need to getour members excited again about help-ing kids. We need to remind ourselveswhy we joined OI...to help kids! Alsoremember our mission statement: "Byproviding hope and positive vision,Optimists bring out the best in kids." Bemore kid friendly--"It's All About theKids."

Finally, we need to focus onAttendance at District meetings.Attendance at our District meetings isdown. Since this is an issue probablyrelated to expense, Zone meetings couldpossibly be the answer. I want each Lt.Governor to try and schedule quarterlyZone Meetings. If the membershipwon't come to us we will come to them.Lets try to skype, twitter, instagram, email, text, facebook, and make phonecalls, but above all, Communicate,Communicate, Communicate with yourclubs. "It's All About The Kids."

Next year, let’s put "service aboveself." You give me your best and I prom-ise you that I will give you my best! "It'sAll About The Kids."

Edward Everett Hale (AmericanClergyman and Writer), grand nephew ofRevolutionary hero Nathan Hale, wrote:

I am only one but I am one.I can't do everything but I can do

something. The something I ought to do, I can

do.And by the grace of God, I will.”Remember...It's not about you It's not about me, "It's All About The Kids."As this year comes to a close, let's

help Governor Ramona finish strong."Keep Your Motors Running."

I wish God's Blessings on each ofyou!

"It's All About The Kids."Thanks for all you do for kids!

Optimist International and OptimistInternational Foundation coexist as twoseparate organizations that support eachother. Optimist International Foundationis the fundraising arm of OptimistInternational and works to developfunds to support the endeavors ofOptimist International and its mission.

The-mission of the Foundation is toseek, receive and manage funds for thebenefit of Optimist International and itsmember clubs in its charitable, literaryand educational activities. This includesthe Essay and Oratorical Contests.

The Optimist InternationalFoundation is a 501(c)(3) in the InternalRevenue Code. Within 501(c)(3) theFoundation is a 509 (a)(1) public chari-ty.

On the individual level the mostcommon way to help is by doing theDime A Day. By just doing one dime aday, you can part of the movement"Helping Optimist Help Kids". Whenyou do this program you will receive apin. If your club denotes $365 your clubwill receive a Club Banner Patch.

I will be discussing these things andother Foundation programs at theOctober District Meeting. In the mean-time the presidents of the clubs can helpout by appointing a Club FoundationChair. If the LT. Governors have notdone their APCPwith your clubs, makesure they ask clubs to appoint a CFRwhen you fill one out.

Dear fellow Optimist,Over the past three weeks our local,

national and international news has beenfilled with headlines about the smallsuburban town of Ferguson, Missouri. The news broadcasts images of a townin upheaval. This town, like manyaround the world, faces challenges thatwill take a variety of people to solve.Though challenging issues exist in everycommunity, few get the kind of attentionthat has been given to Ferguson.

When a new Optimist Club isformed, neighboring Optimists come totown and assess the needs of that com-munity through conversations with localcitizens. With visits to the mayor, policechief, fire marshal, religious leaders andschool principals these visitingOptimists help clarify the unmet needsof the area and then seek out those intown who have an interest in solvingthose issues. Within a small amount of

Make your club part of theconversation in your town

time, local people become a force forOptimism in their communities. ThoseClubs that succeed continue those con-versations in their town and adjust theirfocus as the needs change.

There are Optimist Clubs around theglobe that have been established frombetween one to 95 years. We need tocontinue to encourage our Clubs to bepart of the conversation in our neighbor-hoods and help to solve new problemsas they arise. This allows us to remain aforce for Optimism and provides a com-pelling story to those prospective mem-bers wanting to make a difference.

Does your community see yourClub as a key player in solving yourtown’s issues? Are you routinely invitedto be at the table when these discussionsoccur? If your answer is no, take timethis week to revisit those in your townwho face challenges and let them knowthat your Club is always available tolend a hand and solve local problems.Your outreach to these leaders willremind them that your Club is a forcefor Optimism.

Yours in Optimism,

‘Optimism should be a priority’Past Gov Clarence Gamble called

me today with news about Past GovWillie Lee.

As most of you know, Willie hashad heart problems for years and needsbypass surgery. However, with his needto be on oxygen 24/7, it is currently toorisky for him to undergo surgery.

Last Thursday (9-4-14) whileFrances was at physical therapy, Willie, who was at home, got his foot/leg tan-gled up on the oxygen hose and fell. Hebroke his ankle in three places.Fortunately he has one of those life-alertgizmos to summon help. An ambulancecrew came and took him to the hospital. He is still there as of tonight (9-9-14) inroom 226 of Hardin County Hospital. When doctors say he is able, he will betaken to a rehab facility until he is fitenough to go home.

Please keep Willie and Frances inyour thoughts and prayers. Cards andletters can be sent to their home at:

Past-Gov. Ramona

Numerous elements of human nature rear their head dur-ing this time of the year.

Some of those are good, while others are bad. I oftenhear the words, "Why me?"

Are you a President, Lieutenant Governor or Governorwho felt someone's actions other than your own contributedto an unsuccessful year? Did you get stuck "holding the bag"so to speak? I find these are the words of Members who hadgood intentions at the start. They wanted to make everyonehappy by improving the well-being of the Members in theirClubs, Zones or Districts. What they avoided and did notrealize was they had to plan for the unexpected.

You can knuckle under grumbling all the way or you canuse this last month of the Optimist year to show everyonewhat you are made of. It is time to push back. It's time toreally prove your worth. If you simply throw in the towel, then that is how you will be remembered. I have pushed allyear to convince the leadership of the organization that anylosses regardless how small are not acceptable.

We told you they would happen; we urged you to reachout and replace. Well my friends, it is time to make up those

losses and find new vitality in the hearts of new Members.Don't lose sight of the legacy that Optimism brings to a

community and the kids we serve. I will fight to be anOptimist to the last breath as there is no greater good in thisworld than caring for the children we serve.

Yours in Optimism,President Ron

For many youth organizations inRowan County, the Morehead OptimistClub has been the source of much need-ed funding. In these tough economictimes, many extra- curricular schoolgroups, both in the academic and athlet-ic areas, have been the beneficiaries ofthe Optimist Club motto "Friend ofYouth."

This is not an accident, as the Club’sparent organization, OptimistInternational, is dedicated to "BringingOut the Best In Kids."

An association of more than 2,900local clubs, Optimists worldwide con-duct 65,000 civic projects annually serv-ing well over six million young people.

Each individual Optimist Clubdetermines the needs of young people intheir communities, and using fund-rais-ing methods of their own choosing, theyhave donated millions for the bettermentof young people everywhere.

Founded in 1964, the MoreheadOptimist Club has provided financial

assistance to the youth of Morehead andRowan County for 50 years. Initially, sponsored programs included Tri-StarBasketball, Babe Ruth Baseball, Respectfor Law, and the Optimist Junior Worldof Golf.

In addition, funded projects haveincluded the Rowan County Senior HighSchool softball field, the gifted studentsWashington D.C. trip, smartboards forelementary school classrooms, RowanCounty Christmas, a Library for theGateway Homeless Shelter, librarybooks of elementary schools, startup forthe aviation class at the high school, repairing the football field for theMorgan County High School after thetornado, support of the EKJGA, andfunding for both the high school andmiddle school speech teams.

Club fund-raising projects over theyears have been many and varied, including the sale of Christmas Treesand fishing tournaments. However, things changed for the better in 2005, as

the club established a partnership withCave Run Bingo in Farmers andobtained a charitable gaming license.

Since that date in 2005, theMorehead Optimist Club has providedin excess of $1,160,000 to youth pro-grams in Rowan County. Last yearalone the club hosted 102 nights of char-itable gaming and donated more that$188,000 to local youth groups.

Optimists don’t work alone in gen-erating funds. Parents and friends ofyouth groups seeking funding work atgaming sessions. Together, Optimistclub and group members help to providethe financial support needed to supple-ment budgets that cannot be guaranteed.

Because we believe that operating abingo hall is not something that we cando indefinitely, we have begun usingsome of our gains to establish an endow-ment fund for awarding scholarshipslater on.

The Optimist CreedPromise yourself...To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.To look at the sunny side of everything and make your Optimism come true.To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best.To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.To forget the mistakes of the past, and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the pres-ence of trouble.

Governor Ramsey and Members ofZone 7 set up a convention that wasinformative, relaxing and inspirational.

We enjoyed excellent hospitalityand high excitement at seeing friendsthat we had not seen in a while.

We all enjoyed spending time withPaula & Ken Reyling who were ourguest from OI.

Our program Saturday night wasespecially inspiring with new elementsadded. After dinner, installation of offi -cers and words of wisdom from Paula,Governor Ramsey thanked everyone fortheir support during her year and for ourattendance at the Convention. She alsohad as part of the program words ofencouragement from past governors to

Governor-Designate Roland - verymoving, supporting and emotional. Pastgovernors present were Ed Smith,Clarence Gamble, and Dick Davis. Theprogram ended on a very high Optimistnote with Governor-Designate Roland'sconventon speech.

It was interesting that all 3 speeches(from Paula, Gov Ramona & Gov-Designate Roland) were all related inencouraging the members to keep beiev-ing in themselves and in the organiza-tion Optimist Internation.

Paula said the "we are not done yet"and thanked us "for being 'special peo-ple' who understand te importance of thefun we have by providing hope and apositive vision to each of the children

that we touch".Governor Ramsey compared us to

diamonds, the hardest natural elementthat is known to man. Alone we arestrong, but together with others we arebrillant. We come in "differnet sizesand may have some rough edges buthave skills that when put in together ina group can bring our clubs, zones, anddistricts to shine" in the life of a child. We were all given a replica of a dia-mond to remember who we are.

Governor- Designate Roland endedhis speech with "Keep our motors run-ning" and "IT'S ALL ABOUT THEKIDS".
