The Newest Member of the Team

Archdale United Methodist Church is delighted to welcome Tim Kennedy as our new Director of Youth and Children’s Ministries! In the words of Mike Washburn, his appointment to this position is “the worst kept

Get on your mark….Get set…. GROW!! !

What makes AUMC a place that people would be interested in joining? What makes AUMC a place that people would be interested in joining? What makes AUMC a place that people would be interested in joining? What makes AUMC a place that people would be interested in joining? We have a beautiful sanctuary, a lot of Sunday School classes, a great youth program, and some pretty good music! ( Of

course, we could always use more people in the choir! ) We have a new pastor that is very enthusias-tic about his ministry here, and his sermons are really good! We have a wonderful staff. The atten-

dance has been great this summer, which shows visitors that something good must be going on here. Research shows that a visitor makes up his or her mind within the first 5 minutes if they will come back to a church. I get the pew pads on Monday and send cards of welcome to all the visitors from our area. The front porch caller makes a visit and takes a delicious chicken pie ( thank you, Friendship Class! ) . But all of this is NOT ENOUGHNOT ENOUGHNOT ENOUGHNOT ENOUGH if the congregation does not seem friendly and warm when the visitor is

here.

I am stuck in one place on Sunday mornings, but YOUYOUYOUYOU have the opportunity to speak to EVERYONE EVERYONE EVERYONE EVERYONE that you do notnotnotnot know. Be the loving, welcoming people that I know you to be. Do not forget to talk to

visitors in Sunday School. Someone told me that he invited someone he worked with to his Sunday School Class. Their class was great, as always, and he could not wait to get to work Monday to ask her how she liked the class. Imagine his dismay when she said no one really included her or talked to her.

Guess what? She did not come back.

Another horror story I have heard about our church was when a member told the visitor they were sitting in their seat. Needless to say, no one has an assigned seat in church except the worship leaders and

the choir. ( Remember you can always join the choir if you want an assigned seat! ) If we keep up our summer attendance and even grow, it might be hard to get your “ usual ” seat. The choir was going to start coming down from the loft before the sermon, but the sanctuary has been too crowded for them to

find a seat. THIS IS A GREAT PROBLEM!!! I only hope it continues.

Congratulations to Blair Dowling (daughter of Bob & Debbie Dowling) who was married on June 20th. Blair and husband, Lee Hawley will reside

in High Point.

Eighty-three volunteers have donated over 6,353 hours in the food pantry of COAT. At the COAT annual meeting held on June 18th, these volunteers were recognized. One of those

volunteers is our own Seth Askew. Seth has donated more than 100 hours in helping COAT and families in need! Great job Seth! We are proud of you!!

The following AUMC members were named on the Dean’s List for NC State University:

Jessica Swanner Bryan Peele

Way to go!! Your AUMC family is proud of you.

CONGRATULATIONS!!

Christy Reaves (daughter of Eddie & Vicki Causey) has earned recognition from the Randolph County Board of Education for

achieving National Board Certification.

Christy is a fifth grade teacher at Hopewell Elementary.

Every penny collected will go to veterans with-out families that are in a nursing home or de-ployed. These folks need to know they haven’t been forgotten. I’ve been spending my own money, but it is now too much. Little surprise packages throughout the year really make a dif-ference. There are teddy bears on display in the Education Building. MAINTENANCE FUND BAILOUT

The Maintenance Fund for the church has been depleted. Renovation to the parsonage has been completed at the cost of $13,000. The house received a needed makeover. The following items were addressed in the renovation; electrical work, painting, air conditioning serviced with new duct work, cleaning, flooring, window coverings and other improvements.

Our next project is already in front of us and we need to react quickly. The steeple needs to be cleaned and a maintenance free material added to prevent rotting and damage. The quoted contract price received from the Trustee’s is around $5,000.

Please help in any way you can by contributing to the Maintenance Fund so we can make this repair happen in the near future. All contributions are greatly appreciated!

Friends are Friends Forever!!!!

Well here it is time to write my last newsletter article. I have just returned from a week in Hedgesville West Virginia with a group of people that gave their heart and soul into planting seeds to restore the lives of the "Shives" family. No rela-tion Harold and Martha but you never know! We went as servants of Christ through AUMC and we came back knowing that it did not and could not end there. Roofing

and tearing out walls, insulation and drywall, painting and mudding and child holding and back rides were the order of the day. We laughed together at our crazy team members and we were heavy hearted at what we saw in the lives of these mountain people. God did not call us to fix it but to show Jesus and to continue to show this fam-ily His face through nail and hammer. I was honored to stand beside this group of 24 and I have been honored to live, laugh, cry and hope among this group and this church for the last 6 years.

I write this with a lump in the throat because I don't do this moving thing with lots of style. I am cheesy at heart when it comes to goodbyes. It would be easier to stay but God's call is not suppose to be easy, but it is meant to be grace filled.

About 5 years ago I got into a van with a group of 3 youth from Archdale, three borrowed youth and one adult who said somebody had to go with me on this mission trip and if he had to he had to! They said I was crazy. Who would want to travel to Florida of all places to do mission work and spend that kind of time in a van with youth! Time has moved on and each of those youth still move out to serve in mission and that adult just graduated from seminary (isn't God funny!) When we step out of the boat we will be changed!!! I can not put into words what I feel when I say I have gotten to see the "water walkers" in action. The youth and the children of this church are that! Siblings are watching you guys! Our children are taking the first steps to step out and have the awesome gift of having our youth hold onto them until they are ready to let go.

Archdale Church, watch out Jesus said ...."and a little child shall lead them..."! Please walk by faith and know that Jesus is already waiting for you in the places He calls you to be. A song from my past that is the words that I leave with you are: "Friends are Friends forever if the Lord's the Lord of them and a friend will not say never because the welcome will not end though it's hard to let you go in the Father's hands we know that a lifetime's not to long to live as friends.

Yours forever in Christ. I love you always! - Pat

NEW SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES FOR ADULTS!! Sunday School is not just for children! We have 3 entirely new classes.

All of these classes fill an important need in our church.

Single Again!: This class meets upstairs across from the Upper Room Class. It is for divorced or widowed persons. This class is already very important to its members. Do you think that all Sunday School Classes are filled with mar-ried people, and you do not fit in? Come join them! Call Peggy Johnson for more information.

Young Adults: This is for single people age 18 – 30. The class is meeting in the Mabel Murray Prayer Room down-stairs. This class is growing, and they invite all college students home for the summer to join them. This is a great class. Invite your coworkers to come, too! It is very important for young people to make church a vital part of their lives. Call Rebecca Kidd for more information.

Dana McKim Class: This class is targeting married couples with or without young children or single Moms and Dads. This class meets in the Wesley Room. It starts at 9:40 on Sunday mornings. This is a great opportunity to help start a Sunday School class. We have a lot of new members that fit this category, as well as longtime members that have not been attending Sunday School. Call Cheryl Traylor for more information.

To join these classes, just come on Sunday morning. All of the classes are hoping to grow and become a vital part of

the lives of their members, the church, and the community.
