    Introduction

Fused couplersPassive optical couplers are branching devices with more than 2 fiber ports. Such components distribute the opti-cal power among fibers in a predetermined way. They combine (coupler) or divide (splitter) optical signals inoptical networks. These optical components are used in central offices, customer premises and in outside plantapplications. H+S couplers are manufactured by the fused biconical tapered (FBT) technology. On request thein and outgoing ports of the coupler can be connectorized with all types of connectors. Couplers can be inte-grated into different organiser trays, modules, panels and subassemblies (see System catalogue LISA).

Fused WDMsFused Wavelength Division Multiplexers are 1x2 branching devices used to combine or to divide two differentwavelengths. Due to their manufacturing technology, FBT WDMs have a sinusoidal transfer function. Their main

features are low excess loss, high isolation and high reliability over a narrow wavelength window.

Fiber optic attenuatorsFiber optic attenuators are devices that reduce signal power in fiber optic links by inducing a fixed loss. They areused to control the power level of optical signals at the outputs of light sources and electrical-to-optical (E/O)converters. They are also used to test the linearity and dynamic range of photo sensors and photo detectors.Fiber optic attenuators use different methods of attenuation, such as absorption or scattering.

Quality assurance and traceabilityEach device is identified by a serial number so it is possible at any time to identify the manufacturing param-eters, the workstation, the operator, the material used and the final characterisation measurements.

    Introduction

    Terminologies of passive network components

    Term Description

AttenuationThe decrease in signal strength caused by absorption and scattering. Attenuationis usually expressed in dB.

AttenuatorA passive optical component that intentionally reduces the optical power propa-gating in a fiber.

Broadband Covering a wide range of wavelength.

Center wavelength(s) The nominal operating wavelength(s).

CouplerA passive device that distributes optical power among two or more ports. Alsocalled splitter.

    Coupling ratio

The percentage of light transferred to a receiving output port with respect to thetotal power of all output ports.

Decibel (dB)Unit for measuring the relative strength of a signal. Power level referenced indecibels to a microwatt.

Demultiplex The process of separating optical channels.

    Directivity

Also referred to as nearend crosstalk, it is the amount of power observed at agiven input port with respect to an initial input power.

Excess loss The ratio of the total output power of a passive component with respect to theinput power.

    Insertion loss

A sum of attenuation expressed in dB for a particular path through a component.Insertion loss includes excess loss, splitting loss and polarisation effects.

    Isolation

Also referred to as far-end cross-talk or far-end isolation. Predominantly used inreference to WDM products, it is a measure of light at an undesired wavelengthat any given port.

Polarisation Dependent Loss (PDL) Variation of insertion loss with respect to SOP (State Of Polarisation).

Return lossLight that is reflected back along the path of transmission, from either the cou-pling region, the connector or a terminated fiber.

UniformityThe maximum insertion loss difference between output ports of a splitter withinoperating bandwidth.

    Wavelength Division Multiplexing(WDM)

A transition technique by which separate optical channels, distinguished bywavelength, are multiplexed onto an optical fiber for transmission.

WavelengthThe distance between the same two points on adjacent waves; the time requiredfor a wave to complete a single cycle.

1 N/2 N tree fused couplers are producedthrough a concatenation of 12 couplers.

Broadband couplers are specially optimised for aband range from 800 nm to 1600 nm.

    Asymmetric power split ratios upon customer require-ment are possible (e.g. 13 with 5% / 5% / 90%power splitting).
