PASS AmeriCorps Newsletter
Global Youth Service Day was
established in 1988 to celebrate
and mobilize young people to serve
their community. For this National
Day of Service, the PASS Ameri-
Corps took part in a community
clean up on April 22nd, also honor-
ing Earth Day. Thirty-eight Ameri-
Corps Members, the leadership
team, and a few dedicated PASS
students served and connected
with our different communities
through I Love a Clean San Diego’s
“Creek to Bay Cleanup”. We
cleaned creeks, parks, and streets
to prevent ocean pollution. PASS
AmeriCorps students also partici-
pated, with one Vista student not-
ing that we were cleaning the
neighborhood where his grandpar-
ents lived. The “Creek to
Bay Cleanup” is held twice
a year and the PASS Amer-
iCorps Program partici-
pates every spring.
Along with service to our youth
and communities, the PASS Ameri-
Corps Program is dedicated to
contributing to the professional
growth and development of our
Service Members. On April 17,
2017, PASS hosted a Resume
Workshop.
First, we had a presentation on
how to build an effective resume,
with time to update and construc-
tively critique each other’s re-
sumes. Then we learned tips on
translating this year of service with
PASS AmeriCorps onto our re-
sumes, and had a little time to
incorporate recommendations to
make our resumes as job-market
ready as possible.
We want to thank SDCOE Pro-
gram Specialist, Sal Garcia for pre-
senting on “Technology Trends,
Privacy Settings, and Protecting
Your Personal Brand”; SDCOE
Human Resources Project Special-
ist, Jessica Glover for presenting on
“Interview/Resume Strategies and
EdJoin”, and giving us some tips
from HR about how to make our-
selves competitive; PASS Ameri-
Corps Support Supervisors, Ya-
neen Gutierrez for presenting on
“Resume Building” and Teenie Le
for presenting on “Interview Tips”;
PASS AmeriCorps Service Mem-
bers, Corey Bishop for presenting
on “Social Media Networking:
LinkedIn” and Jonathan Spicer for
presenting on “Professional Eti-
quette in the Workplace.”

PASS AmeriCorps Resume Workshop
We wrapped up the day by practic-
ing our answers to possible inter-
view questions in mock interview
breakout groups, facilitated by our
guest speakers and PASS Support
Supervisors.
We hope that the day was useful
and informative, helping our PASS
AmeriCorps Service Members as
they begin transitioning into the end
of their 2016-17 Term of Service
with PASS.

service projects!

This is it! Our VCMS
PASS students are
gearing up for a suc-
cessful close to the
school year. During
spring break, the
Valley Center PASS
AmeriCorps team
attended the Indian
Health Council fair
and got to run an
activity booth for families and their
children while sharing in the spirit
of community outreach. Children
and parents made chicks out of
construction paper and wrote
positive spring messages inside!
Upon their return to school,
Miss Carley and Miss Lora
were pleased to see many
students working hard during
class visits, even after vacation.
April’s PASS AmeriCorps pro-
ject will center on Global
Youth Service Day & Earth
Day. To celebrate, PASS stu-
dents had a chance to create
seed-balls, which are a feasible
way to plant seeds of all sorts
in high maintenance places
such as meadows or banks.

event put on by I Love a Clean
San Diego. This event took
place at Dixon Lake in Escon-
dido and volunteers spent
several hours picking up litter
around the area and learning
about local wildlife. One PASS
student, Ruben S., attended
the clean-up; PASS thanks him

April is almost over
and that means that
Oak Glen is only a
month and a half away
from the end of the
year and with it, grad-
uation. During this
month, we celebrated
Earth Day; students
had the opportunity
to plant flowers and/
care of our planet! The stu-
dents who chose to volunteer
by planting, learned about the
dwindling bee populations,
including what they can do to
help with the impending crisis.
The next few weeks will bring
a strong push to keep grades
and spirits up to end the year
on a positive note.
into personalized plant-
ers. We then planted
coleus seeds in them, and each
student will be able to watch
their seeds grow into vibrant
plants throughout the next few
months. This gave students a
chance to see the satisfaction
and fun that can come from
planting your own plants. We
are excited to give picture
updates in the next newsletter
to show our progress. Another
exciting development this
month is the inception of Pro-
ject AWARE at VCHS. This
program will run as an ASE
class for a select group of stu-
dents, and will provide support
and emotional skill building
activities.
April brought much needed
spring energy and weather to
Valley Center High School. We
had our spring break early in
the month, providing relaxa-
tion before the final stretch to
summer. This month, we start-
ed an Earth Day project for
Global Youth Service Day.

The PASS AmeriCorps Program serves stu-
dents in grades 3 through 12 at 29 school sites
across San Diego County, including campuses
in San Diego, Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos,
and Valley Center. Each PASS AmeriCorps
member provides support for 30 targeted stu-
dents through individual and group mentoring,
academic support, grades and attendance re-
views, leadership development, guest speakers,
service learning projects, and parent outreach.
Through their service with PASS, our Ameri-
Corps members are able to create positive
change in our schools and communities.
