PAILAW SA DABAWVenues: LGU Complex, People’s Park, and main thoroughfares of Davao CitySchedule: 1-31 December 2011

This year’s annual celebration will start with the lighting of the LGU Complex, the People’s Park and the main thoroughfares of the City which is dubbed as Pailaw sa Dabaw, by 1 December. This traditional activity is staged annually to signal the start of the month-long celebration. A new component is being introduced this year: the installation of colourful, lighted Christmas lanterns on the lampposts around the city’s major thoroughfares. Truly, visiting tourists, both local and foreign, will be treated to a festive atmosphere around the city as they take part in the various activities lined up for this year’s celebration.

The start of the Pailaw will also coincide with the soft opening of the other pocket activities around the City, particularly the Pasko Fiesta Bazaar along Palma Gil Street, Pasko Sa Chinatown along Sta. Ana Avenue (fronting the Davao Central High School), Pasko Sa Litsonan along Chavez Street and the Pasko Sa Roxas along Roxas Avenue. (separate descriptions of these events are provided in the later portion of this document) While these will all be opened already by 1 December, the formal opening program of the said events will take place also on the 5th of December, after the Pasko Fiesta sa Dabaw Grand Opening Program in People’s Park.

2ND INDAY SARA – 10TH RRD ELDERLYMPICS 2011Venue: RMC Gym (3-4 December) and SM City Davao (5 December – awarding of winners)Schedule: 3-5 December 2011

This annual event, which is participated in by the City’s Federation of Senior Citizens, aims to provide a venue for physical and mental exercise as well as to recognize the significant contribution of the senior citizens to the community. The Elderlympics will have various activities lined-up such as field demonstration, relay competitions, walkathon, chess, table tennis, paper cutting, message relay, candle relay, golf ball putting, fish fanning, quiz bowl and social ballroom dancing competition, among others.

PASKO FIESTA SA DABAW GRAND OPENINGVenue: People’s ParkSchedule: 5 December 2011, 5:00 PM

Unlike last year when the formal Pasko Fiesta kick-off program was held on 1 December, this year’s Opening Program will be held on Monday, 5 December 2011, 5:00 PM at the People’s Park. The highlight of the program shall be the lighting of the giant Christmas Tree inside the premises of the People’s Park. The formal opening of the other pocket activities mentioned above shall follow immediately after.

HULAGWAY SA DABAWVenue: various major malls in Davao CitySchedule: 6 December 2011 (mall tour); 21 December 2011 (Awarding of Winners)

Hulagway sa Dabaw is a photo contest that seeks to showcase the city’s various tourist attractions and festivals as captured through the lens of photo enthusiasts. The contest is be open to any interested photographer. The theme of the photo competition is “LIFE IS HERE: Something Good in Davao.” With the following categories: PEOPLE, EVENTS, PLACES and LOCAL ICONS. Photos must depict Davao City as one of the best tourism destinations of the Philippines. The photo must showcase the beauty and grandeur of each subject.

After a process of shorlisting, the final entries will be exhibited in various malls around the city beginning 6 December 2011 to give the public a chance to appreciate the creative works of the contestants and, more importantly, showcase the tourism attractions of the city to our visitors and tourists. Winning entries will be showcased for a year in the Museo Dabawenyo.

HANDURAW SA HIMAYAVenue: Museo Dabawenyo, A. Pichon St.Schedule: 8 December 2011 until 10 January 2012

A Visual Arts Competition and Exhibition open to all Davao-based young visual artists portraying the nativity scene. The competition encourages creativity matched with technique and craftsmanship for non-professional artists, students, and out-of-school individuals ages 15-25 y/o (Category I, Senior Category) and ages 7-14 y/o (Category 2, Junior Category).

The City Social Services and Development Office shall take the lead in implementing this activity aimed at providing appropriate social services to our lumad brothers and sisters from various remote areas of the city who annually come to the city’s poblacion to take part in the city’s celebration of the Christmas season. Food and temporary shelter are provided in designated parts of the city for almost one month. Food and gift packs will also be handed to all lumad upon their return to their respective homes.

The Pasko Fiesta Night Market will be staged along J. Palma Gil Street and will line up stalls to showcase various home-grown products from processed food, arts and crafts and plants and flowers. A small area between the whole stretch shall be dedicated for pocket events such as magic shows, street performers, culinary workshops and others.

PASKO SA LITSONAN NG CHINATOWNVenue: Chavez StreetSchedule: 16-23 December 2011

Pasko sa Litsonan ng Chinatown will be a week-long food event along Chavez St. featuring Chinese dumplings and other delicacies, as well as lechon, as Chavez St. is also known as the house of the original lechon houses in the city. Aside from the assorted food items, the event will also have assorted various items perfect for gifts during the Holiday Season. The event is also being spearheaded by the Davao City Chinatown Development Council.

PASKO SA ROXASVenue: Roxas AvenueSchedule: 1-31 December 2011

The Pasko sa Roxas Avenue is primarily a night entertainment area along a certain stretch of Roxas Avenue. Similar to previous years, the Hudyakaan will feature around 40 stalls selling various food products and drinks. A dining area will be provided to its customers while they enjoy live music from some of the homegrown talents and Manila bands. The event will be handled by the Davao Association of Tour Operators.

The City’s major parks play host to carnival rides that offer free entertainment for children during this Christmas season.

Dasig Sayaw is a Christmas celebration through powerdancing in People’s Park by the energetic youth of Davao City.

TUGSAYAWIT Venue: People’s ParkSchedule: afternoons of 19-20 December 2011

Tugsayawit or short for TUGtog, SAYaw, and AWIT, is a Christmas performance combining three (3) elements: dance, chorale performance and music.

RONDALSAYAVenue: People’s ParkSchedule: 25 December 2011

Rondalsaya is a Christmas merrymaking to the beats and tunes of Christmas songs suavely played by Davao’s rondallas and expressed by accompanying folk dances.

PASKO TAKBO: A RUN FOR A HEALTHIER CHRISTMASVenue: Rizal ParkSchedule: 10 December 2011, 5:00 AM

Pasko Takbo is a fun-run for a cause organized by the City Government of Davao, in partnership with various socio-civic organizations, to further raise the awareness for a healthy celebration of the Christmas Season. Pasko Takbo will have 3K (for parent/s and child team), 5K and 10K categories.

LIBRO SA PASKOVenue: Davao City Recreation Center (formerly Almendras Gym)Schedule: 14 December 2011, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM

It is a whole day activity for children to promote the reading of books under the “Magbasa ’Ta Program” of the City Government of Davao. Happening in the morning will be Book Fun Activities, while a Book Character Parade Contest will take place in the afternoon.

NINE MORNINGSVenue: infront of San Pedro CathedralSchedule: 16-24 December 2011, 4:00 – 7:00 AM

This activity takes place during the entire duration of the traditional Misa De Gallo wherein stalls selling assorted native delicacies such as hot chocolate, puto bumbong, bibingka, suman and many others will greet the mass-goers as they exit San Pedro Cathedral.

Kahayag sa Pasko is a lighting and decorative competition of various buildings and edifices all over the city. This includes the various hotel establishments, malls and barangay halls.

LAMDAG PARADA Venue: Roxas, CM Recto, San Pedro Rizal ParkSchedule: 21 December 2011

Lamdag Parada is the city’s version of the world-famous Electric Light Parade and will again feature holiday lights on elaborate floats. Escorts of the competing floats shall be required to wear Christmas-themed costumes.

Paskong Handog Day is a collaboration among Davao City’s civic organizations to share their blessings to their designated beneficiaries. Performances of top winners of the various Pasko Fiesta competitions will showcase their talent and entertain the crowd.

This Christmas celebration will feature surprise performances from renowned artists, top winners of Pasko Fiesta competitions, group games throughout the show as this day celebrates the unity of families during this yuletide season.
