Eligibility

Local, not-for-profit academic and research institutions and nationalintellectual property offices in two groups of countries may register foraccess to resources made available through ARDI. The groups ofcountries are generally based on three factors: gross national income(GNI) per capita, Human Development Index (HDI) figures, and UnitedNations Least Developed Country (LDC) status.

For institutions based in Group A countries, access through ARDI is free.

For institutions based in Group B countries, access through ARDI isavailable for 1500 US dollars per institution per calendar year (fromJanuary through December). Institutions based in Group B countriesmay benefit from a six-month free trial period.

About ARDI

The Access to Research for Development and Innovation (ARDI)program is coordinated by the World Intellectual Property Organization(WIPO) together with its partners in the publishing industry with theaim to increase the availability of scientific and technical information indeveloping countries.

By improving access to scholarly literature from diverse fields ofscience and technology, the ARDI program seeks to:

• reinforce the capacity of developing countries to participate in theglobal knowledge economy; and

• support researchers in developing countries in creating anddeveloping new solutions to technical challenges faced on a localand global level.

Access to scholarly literature is critical to the innovation process, as it represents an important source of scientific and technicalknowledge and thus complements the information contained in patentdocuments. Particularly in fields such as biotechnology and organicchemistry, much of the most recent and relevant information iscontained in science journals and similar publications, which aretherefore indispensable for understanding the current state of the art.
