PART PRINT ANALYSIS

Page 2: part print analysis

The process engineer having received the part prints from the design department will have to make a preliminary analysis of the part print in order to get a general visualization of the whole manufacturing of the part.

General shape and size can be obtained at 1st analysis.

Besides these tolerances, surface finish and work material would be required to take correct decisions.

The general configuration of the part

– It refers to general shape and size of the part– The scale of the drawing should be observed to misinterpret the size of the components. It is

related to the various problems like:- • Handling - weight• Type of tooling - shape• Type of machine tools – shape and size provides specifications• Blank – sequence of operations• The material – type of processing

Functional surfaces of the work piece

• The surfaces of the work piece which are developed by the process of manufacture are known as functional surfaces. Considering

the fact that machining increases the final cost of component and hence should be minimised. These are identified from the part print on the following criterion:

– Surface finish – Basic geometry – Tolerances on the dimension or surface.

Determining areas used for processing

Location surface: Determining those areas which are best qualified for locating the work piece during processing.

Support Surface: Determining those areas which are best qualified for the supporting the work piece during processing. Clamping Surface: Determining those areas which are best qualified for holding the

work piece during the processing.
