Be  On  the  Look  Out  -  Park  La  Brea  Safety

By Lisa LockwoodVeteran Detective-Author-Crime Analyst

(A Park La Brea Resident)

The first thing that comes to mind to deter crime when I see an expansive, high foot and vehicle traffic community like Park La Brea is simple: “If You See Something, Say Something.” The best way a community can protect itself from invariable crime; ranging from petty-theft to burglaries from motor vehicles and homes is to be alert. Care about your neighbors and your neighbors’ property.

The LAPD and the security personnel at Park La Brea will tell you that they depend on citizens, like you, to pass along important information that benefits everyone living in this beautiful community. Case in point: the Towers at Park La Brea have received improved mailbox facilities which now provide security for residents’ packages as well as letter mail. Previously, all packages were left outside a resident’s door and they became easy prey for opportunists. Today residents still get deliveries at their door, (Excessively large USPS shipments, FedEx, UPS, Amazon, etc.), it is not a perfect system but it has improved monumentally. Do your best to arrange to be home when you know you’re expecting a parcel or communicate with your neighbor to receive and hold the package in your absence.

Living in a gated community with its own security personnel leads one to the assumption that Park La Brea is impenetrable to crime. As great as these two factors are, criminals and opportunists live to circumvent the system.

Are you leaving valuable items on your patios, in your yards, or out in the hallways? These situations serve as enticements to people who wouldn’t ordinarily take something, but due to the ease of not getting caught they make for an easy target. Have you seen the viral videos of “common folk” everyday people – including housewives – getting caught red-handed snatching packages from people’s porches? Sadly, it happens. Be a good neighbor. If it doesn’t pass the Sniff Test, “If something appears off it usually is.” Trust your Intuition!

You are a vital part of keeping our community safe. Remember: “If You See Something, Say Something.”
