FROM THE VICAR’S DESK
Beloved Ones in Christ,
I greet all of you in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. We entered
in to another month, so let us thank and praise God for His blessings to us, in the
previous month. According to the church lectionary, there are two special weeks
in the month of October; Youth Day and Reformation Day. I would like to share
a few thoughts about the aforementioned themes.
The first Friday of this month will be the day for youths. Youths are the strength
and the power of the present. In relation with the church, youths are the
backbone of the church. Youth is an important stage in the life cycle of human
being. When we analysis the five letters in the word youth, we can see the nature
and character of the youth stage. These are my views about the word “Youth”
Y- Yearning, strong desire.
O- Oyster, means that something which receives whatever it wished.
U- Unbound, means that something cannot be controlled.
T- Tenacious, means that those who stick or strongly stands for.
H- Healthy, sound physical and mental condition.
If we evaluate these characteristics, these are the common nature of youths. In the
book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon the wise predicted these characteristics of
youths and speaks as like this; Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let
your heart cheer you in the days of your youth. Walk in the ways of your heart
and the sight of your eyes. But know that for all these things, God will bring you
in to judgment (Ecclesiastes 11: 9). Solomon, the writer of the book has given a
warning to the youth for being careful in the youth age. The word of God clearly
says that you will be failed if you are not using the youth age properly. Samson,
in the book of Judges is an example for the failed youth.
Now a day, the youths are searching for a good model to pursue, heroes of the
world became the worshiping figures for the youths. They cannot find out the
role models or heroes of faith from the Bible. Jesus Christ, who sacrificed His
youth for the humanity, should be our role model. We can build a spiritual world
only through Christ, the true model.
The fourth week of this month will be the week of Reformation. Even though the
16th century A.D. was the age of reformation, the thoughts of reformation were
formulated during the 14th
and 15th centuries. John Wycliffe and John Huss were
the leaders the movement. They are known as the precursors to the reformation.
They raised their voice against the evil practices existed within the church.
The sale of indulgences, pilgrimages, appeal to the saints and the failures in the
priesthood were the reasons of reformation. In 1517, October 31, the Catholic
______________CShIZqX³ ____________

Priest Martin Luther pasted 95 theses of charges against the Catholic Church’s
wrong deeds on the door of the Wittenberg Church. This historical day has been
accepted as the Reformation Day. This act gave way to deep discussions and
debates within the church leaders and Luther’s arguments; also it became a
challenge to the Roman Catholic doctrines and practices. This movement gained
adherents in Germany, Netherland, Scandinavia, Scotland and in France.
Huldreich Zwingli, John Calvin, John Knox, Henry VIII were the leaders of
reformation in Switzerland, France, Scotland and England respectively. The
Reformation leaders accepted three basic things theologically :
1. Sole authority of Scripture
Scripture alone was first watchword of the reformation. According to this
doctrine, the word contained in the Bible is the only authority for the Christian in
matters of faith, life, and conduct. The teachings and traditions of the church are
to be completely subordinate to the Scriptures.
2. Justification by faith alone.
Justification by faith alone was the second watchword of the reformation.
This doctrine maintains that we are justified before God by faith alone, not by
anything we do, and not by anything the church does for us. The apostle Paul
states that “For by Grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your
own doing; it is the gift of God, (Ephesians:2:8).
3. Priesthood of all believers.
The third principle of the reformation was the priesthood of all believers.
The Scripture teaches that all believers are “holy priesthood” (1 Peter: 2: 5).
All believers are priests before God, through our great high priest Jesus Christ.
In 1st Timothy: 2:5, “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between
God and men, the man Christ Jesus”. As believers, we all have direct access to
God through Christ; there is no necessity for an earthly mediator.
We, as the successors of the reformed church, may the God give Grace
to hold on the faith values and continue our journey of salvation.
Yours in His Service
Paul Achen
